Obituary for James H. Richards (1848-1919)
No. 122 - Uncited clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection" of Beth Rengers Talken, 1998.

James H. RICHARDS was born in Flint Hill, St. Charles county, Missouri, September 23, 1848. His parents Chas. and Louisa RICHARDS, came to Missouri from Landen county, Va., in the year 1838, locating at Flint Hill. After a few years residence there the family moved to a farm a few miles northwest, near Big Creek, where the subject of this sketch, then a boy, grew to manhood, married, reared a family and spent a useful life from which he passed away April 9, 1919, having reached his three score and ten years, 6 months and 17 days.

His wife was Venia COCHRAN, to whom he married January 31, 1883. To this union eight children were born, viz., Mary E., Hardin H., Eugene T., James V., Otis D., Fred W., Emiline and Venia L., who preceded her father in death 6 years. Besides his wife and seven children and two grandchildren he is survived by two brothers, John E., of Troy, and C.T. RICHARDS, of Wentzville, and an aunt, Mrs. Ellen DAVIS, of Wright City. There are other relatives and many friends who lament the loss sustained by his death.

The writer cannot give personal knowledge of the qualitites and virtues of the decedent but reputation from neighbors and friends honors him a good man, quiet and retiring in his manners, industrious, frugal and kind.

He professed religion and united with the Presbyterian church when about 30 years of age and, doubtless, kept the faith to the end. Funeral services were conducted at the home Friday, April 10, at 2 p.m. in the midst of a large gathering of friends who accompanied the remains to the Troy cemetery where he rests from the strifes and struggles of mortal life. His six sons served as pallbearers. May special grace be the portion of the widow, and the fatherless, cheering their hearts now and stimulating the hope of a blessed reunion in the "sweet bye and bye."

-O.A. GORDON
