Obituary for William Sherman Cottle (1875-1918)
No. 032 - Uncited clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection" of Beth Rengers Talken, 1998.

W.S. COTTLE, formerly a grocery dealer at Troy, and one of the town's most highly respected citizens, died Monday afternoon at his home in Troy after a short illness of influenza which resulted in pneumonia.

William Sherman COTTLE was born in Troy, Missouri, October 31, 1875, being the son of Stephen and E.D. COTTLE. He spent practically all his life at Troy, and died at his home here at 3:55 p.m. Dec. 9th, 1918.

On June 1st, 1899, he was united in marriage to Miss Lucy PENN. One child, Clara Penn COTTLE, was born to this union. He was converted under the preaching of Rev. Lincoln McCONNELL, and united with the M.E. church, South, at Troy, where he retained his membership up to the date of his death. He was also a member of Troy Lodge No. 34, A.F. & A.M., who took charge of the funeral service.

Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Lucy COTTLE, his daughter, Miss Clara Penn COTTLE, and two brothers, Joe COTTLE of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Lee COTTLE of Seattle, Wash.

Sherman COTTLE was a good man, kind and courteous to all with whom he came in contact, true as steel to his friends, and a devoted and loving husband and father. He had a large number of friends in Troy and vicinity, for his genial nature made him loved by everyone who knew him.

Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock and his body was laid to rest in the city cemetery. Sincere sympathy is extended to those bereaved.

Note regarding clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection":  Neva Murphy Hubbard (1886-1971) lived all of her life in Lincoln County, MO.  She collected a large file of clippings of Lincoln County residents. The majority of the clippings were without citation. Beth Rengers Talken, beneficiary of the collection, has transcribed them for inclusion in our Lincoln County Heritage Records.
