Obituary for John H. Brandes (1884-1960)

Retired Troy Merchant Dies.

John H. BRANDES, retired merchant, was found dead at his home on Cap au Gris street in Troy, Wednesday evening, February 8.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, February 11, at the Kemper-Marsh Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. James DUNCAN. Interment was made in the Troy cemetery.

Mr. BRANDES is survived by his wife, Mrs. Floy BRANDES, a patient in the Troy Nursing Home, a daughter, Mrs. A. H. DOWDY, of Los Angeles, Calif., two grandsons, and other relatives.

Born August 27, 1884, at Moscow Mills, Mr. BRANDES was 76 years, 5 months and 11 days of age at the time of his death.

Mr. BRANDES had spent much of his life in Troy, having been one of the owners of The Leader, a general merchandise store which was operated in Troy for many years. Following the closing of the Leader, in partnership with James DUDLEY, they operated the men's store of DUDLEY and BRANDES. After Mr. DUDLEY's death he continued the operation of the store until he sold to Mr. and Mrs. Barclay CORTELYOU and retired from active business.


Note regarding clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection":  Neva Murphy Hubbard (1886-1971) lived all of her life in Lincoln County, MO.  She collected a large file of clippings of Lincoln County residents. The majority of the clippings were without citation. Beth Rengers Talken, beneficiary of the collection, has transcribed them for inclusion in our Lincoln County Heritage Records.
