Daniel and Sarah Frances (Koester) Cluny Family (c1893)
Back Row (l to r): Daniel CLUNY, Mary Ellen "Molly", Nancy Margaret "Nanny", Sarah Frances (Koester) CLUNY.
Front Row (l to r): Leonard Henry "Lennie", Lucy Katherine "Katie", Rebecca May "Becky"

This picture was probably taken in Oklahoma. They lived near Tonkawa. Daniel took his family to Oklahoma during the 1893 Oklahoma Land Rush, leaving Lincoln County, Missouri far behind. Becky was born on the way to Oklahoma, May 15,1893 in Kansas City, Kansas. Daniel staked a claim during the "Rush", but was soon ran off by claim jumpers. It was either give them the land or leave his wife as a widow with all those children to raise. They also lived near Blackwell, Kansas for a time. But by 1896 they were in Tonkawa, because that's where there son Emery Edwin was born in 1896. The family was later told many stories about the Indians in this area by Grandma "Becky". They lived in a sod home in Oklahoma and Becky always said they were called "clodhoppers" because of this. She often recalled that in the Fall her parents would take them to town to buy new shoes. They would see Indians standing around town with naked chests and just a blanket wrapped around their shoulders. An Indian Chief once told Sarah he would like to adopt Lennie and make him his son and he would have his own land when he grew to be a man. Naturally this scared her something awful, and it wasn't long before she talked Daniel into moving back to Lincoln County. Uncle Levi McClellan sent them the fare to come home on the train and set up a job with Mr. Sitton to work on his farm.
