County Farm Cemetery, Grundy County, MO

"The necessity of making provisions for the poor of the county being apparent, the County Court at March 7th, 1871, ordered that twenty cents on the one hundred dollars be levied on all taxable property in the county, to be known as the poor fund, to be used for the purchase and improvement of a poor farm. The Court examined a piece of land containing 84 acres three miles north of Trenton, purchased the same, and ordered suitable buildings to be erected. At January term, 1872, George W. Gibson was appointed by the Court as superintendent for one year commencing March 1st, 1872. One half acre of this farm was fenced off in the southeast corner, as a burial place for the pauper dead. The cost of a pauper burial outfit was fixed at ten dollars for a suit and five dollars for a coffin. All coffins over three feet in length were to have raised lids. No records were kept for the first three years, but the county physician suggested a book of record and "all inmates have their full names entered as such facts are of value for identification of all who may be compelled by misfourtune to accept a pauper living and fill a pauperīs grave." Mr. David Wigle was the second supīt. As high as one dollar and fifty cents per week has been allowed for board of those unable to work"
