He and his wife, Hanna HAMPTON moved to Albany in 1886 from Meigs Co, OH where they appear in the 1860 abd 1880 censuses. Also would like his birth info - all I have is 1813 in PA - and parents and/or siblings. Any info on the COULTER family in Albany, Gentry Co, MO and Kansas City, Jackson Co, MO will be deeply appreciated!

Greetings! Has anyone out there had any luck doing cemetery research in Gentry County? Iīve hit lots of dead ends due to the countyīs poor burial records. Iīm researching the FRANCIS surname. Many of my descendants were from the King City area. Iīm trying to find a date of death for my GGgrandfather, John Francis, who died sometime between 1867-1900 around the King City area. I found John and his family on the 1860 Polk Township, DeKalb Co. census, but after that, could not locate them.

I made a trip out there two years ago and found lots of good information in Andrew, Buchanan, and DeKalb Counties, but Gentry Co. has been tough. Even the NW MO Genealogy Society in St. Joe had little info.

Help!

My grandfather, Sherman Ulysses HAYDEN married my grandmother, Almedia Jane KERNS sometime in the 1890s in King City, Gentry County, Missouri. My grandmother was born there supposedly in 1871. They had 7 children Gertrude, Clara Martha, Raymond, Lester, Charles and Chester Sherman HAYDEN (my father). The older children were born in King City area. My father was born after my grandparents moved to South Dakota. My grandmother became ill and wanted to be with her parents. My grandparents and my father moved back to King City when my father was 7. The older children were grown and remained in South Dakota. My grandmother died near King City in 1917 and is buried in the Millen Cemetery about 5 miles south of there. My maternal great grandparents were Everhart and Martha KERNS and my maternal great great grandparents were Reverend Everhart and Elizabeth ANTLE (they are buried in a pioneer cemetery east of Easton, Buchanan County, MO. They are on the 1840 Buchanan County Census for Marion Township but not on the 1850 census there. I'm assuming they moved to the King City area after 1840.

I am searching for earlier census records and Civil War/marriage/baptism/school/land records/medical records of these families. My great grandparents lived near the Millen Cemetery and KERNS and ANTLE children probably attended the Shepherd School near there. My father attended school there also. My Grandfather Sherman Ulysses HAYDEN and my father left for Oregon about 1924. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Several families from Gentry County homesteaded northeast of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in the area opened by the Runs of '89 and '91. The FRIEND and MILLIGAN families were from the Stansberry area. I suspect, but have not been able to prove, that the SWEAT and RUBLE families lived nearby. If you have anyone who moved from Gentry County to central Oklahoma before 1900, let's compare notes. My database has over 2,500 people, with about 300 of the founding families of the Luther, OK area, including both black and white pioneers.

I am researching the families of MURPHY, OSBORN and HADLEY. Joseph MURPHY migrated to Missouri and met Lydia Mathilda OSBORN. They were married 16 July 1856 in Missouri, possibly Gentry County. Lydia's parents McDaniel OSBORN and Rebecca WELLS had migrated to Gentry County in the 1840's. I believe that Rebecca WELLS died in Gentry County, Missouri, 10 February 1847. Joseph MURPHY and Lydia Mathilda OSBORN had twelve children. I know that some, if not all were born in Gentry County. My great-grandfather was Samuel Murphy, son of Joseph MURPHY, and he was born February 1862 in Gentry County, Missouri. Samuel MURPHY married Anna Rose HADLEY on 10 March 1887 in Gentry County, Missouri. They had eight daughters: Velva, Burla, Ruby, Eva, Reda, Minnie Marie, Frankie and Nellie. My grandmother Minnie Marie MURPHY, Samuel's daughter, was born in Gentry County, October 1898. I would appreciate information on these family lines.

Name: Francis M. McCoy, Jr.
I believe my Family Roots come from Floyd CO. KY and migrated with the pioneers to Missouri in about 1857. It appears that they settled in the Gentry CO. area. Albany is mentioned in some of my references, and Dennis E. McCOY was known to have spent some time in Harrison CO. Here is what I have, and I would like to contribute to the cause and learn as much about my family as I can in the process:

1. William McCoy, b. 1750 Floyd CO. KY d. ca 1818 KY
2. Daniel McCoy, b. 1790 m. Nancy ?; in Floyd CO. KY. Moved to Gentry Co. in 1857.
3. Dennis E. McCoy b. 1848 m. Sarah Quigley 1899 Gentry CO.
3. Charlie McCoy
3. Mary McCoy
4. Francis M. McCoy, b. 1905 in Albany, MO m. Charlotte Thomas 1929 in Albany.
(2) m. Naoma Faye Frazier
5. Francis M. McCoy Jr. b. 1941, m. Jane Childs Speer 1968
6. Elizabeth Frazier McCoy b. 1972
6. James Ramsey McCoy b. 1975

I believe Daniel brought his family from KY to MO (Gentry CO.) around 1857. Dennis is buried in the Ernest-Quigley Cemetery in Gentry CO. with his wife and other family members. Sarah Quigley died at childbirth of her only child Francis M., my father. His first wife Charlotte, died giving birth to their first child, Sarah Ann. Anything you can provide which would help me confirm any of this would be greatly appreciated.

I am helping my father seek any and all information on his family. He was born Herman Eugene RAINEY in Atlanthus Grove, Gentry County in 1926. His mother's name was Goldie GRAHAM, one brother was named Horace RAINEY and a sister named Margaret RAINEY. His Grandfather was a farmer and had a small general store. His Uncle Jim RAINEY raised sheep and miniature ponies. His (Jim's) wife's name was Elsie RAINEY. Due to the economic times and circumstances beyond the family's ability to control he (my father) and his siblings were placed in an orphanage. The older siblings were said to have run away, but he and his sister MARGARET RAINEY were too young to take along. My father was adopted (his adopted surname is FORBES) and has had a wonderful life, he only seeks information about any member of the Rainey family. My father is 71 years old. He lost his wife two years ago. He wants nothing from the Raineys but information. Anyone who can assist with any small bit of information is encouraged to respond. THANKS!!!

I am seeking any and all information that I can find on the VASSER-VASSAR family of Gentry and Worth Cos..

I know that my Samuel Vasser and his wife Arabella were listed in the 1850 MO Census, in Athens Twp., Gentry Co. I would like to know anything about this group. Are there cemetery records? I do not know where they died. I do not know Arabella's maiden name.

I also have a copied page from a history book that says, "Peter Vasser and his son Samuel were also early settlers in Lot's Grove, coming in the spring of 1846.........from Andrew Co. to Worth Co. " I only have this one photocopied page, that has no title or dates on it. Is it possible to purchase any books relating to these counties and their history?

Any assistance or ideas you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Mary M. (LEE) DEVERSī obituary of her death on 15 Aug., 1914 stated that she moved from IN to MO in 1846 and settled 6 miles west of Pattonsburg...there she married John Perry DEVERS. Their oldest child, Merritt Lemuel DEVERS was born March 1849. So John P. DEVERS and Mary M. LEE married 1846-1848. John Perry DEVERS died 17 Feb., 1873 in Bethany, MO. The Bethany newspapers don't go back that far, and the Eagleville News has no record of an obit.

Also looking for an obituary for my ancestor Elizabeth (WALKER) RITTER. Old relatives state she is buried in Bethel cemetery, probably Pattonsburg, but could be Union Star. They lived in Daviess county in 1880. She died as a result of an outbuilding falling on her and also a young child was killed. Thank you.

I am trying to find more information on my great, great grandfather, James Baxter BERRY, particularly information about his civil war service. The information I have is as follows: He was born in Schuyler County, Illinois and married Eleanor Grantham in Montgomery County, Illinois, on September 6, 1848. In 1853 he moved to Gentry County, Missouri, where he farmed near Albany. In 1855 he moved to Wilson Township and in December, 1867 to Enyart. He had 153 acres of land in section 7, township 64, range 32. In June of 1878, he was appointed postmaster of Enyart. During the war he apparently "served in the militia, enlisting in Colonel Craynor's regiment in 1861". He had seven children:

William Harrison,
Mary J. (wife of William O Craig),
James D,
Jacob N,
Thomas H,
George R, and

He was a member of the "M.E. Church". Again, I would appreciate any information you may be able to provide. I would certainly be interested in information concerning his Civil War service, particularly the unit he served with. Thank You

At time of Fannieīs death, she had 7 siblings. She was buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery according to the services of Eastern Star of which she appeared to be a member. The funeral service at Methodist Episcopal Church South was conducted by Reverend W. Parvin, her pastor. There is no other information for W.B.Lawrence.

If you have any information which may have a bearing I hope you will respond. Thank you so very much.

Date: 14 Nov 1998

We are looking for additional info on the ROTAN and OLIVER families in Gentry Co, MO. Wm. E. ROTAN died 1906 in Gentry Co, Mo. Wm. ROTAN had a half-brother George W. SMITH. The following info on George W. SMITH and some of his family members is from The History of Wayne and Clay Co, IL originally written in 1884 and reprinted by the Clay County Historical Society in 1969.

George W. SMITH, insurance and real estate agent, is a son of Willis and Cynthia(JONES) SMITH, and was born October 7, 1847 in Marion County, ILL. The father was born in North Carolina, and when a mere boy removed with his parents to Tennessee, where he attained to manhood. He came with other members of the family to Illinois, and settled in Marion County in 1828, and was there married to Sallie LYNCH, who died, leaving a family of six children, of whom three are still living. Mr. SMITH next married Cynthia JONES, daughter of Byron JONES, and widow of John ROTAN. She was born in White County, Tenn., in 1812, and is still living, and a resident of Flora, lLL. She is the mother of eight children, three of whom are the issue of the marriage to Willis SMITH, which occurred in 1845. The ROTAN children were William ROTAN, now a farmer in Missouri; Nancy (deceased), wife of Mr. L.L. JOHNSON, of Missouri; the late Hon. Byron J. ROTAN, of Louisville, ILL., who was an able lawyer and a member of the State Legislature from the Forty-fourth District from 1873 to 1875; he died in Louisville, ILL. March 9, 1880 leaving a wife and three children, now residents of Missouri; the fourth was Jane ROTAN, who died in 1854, in early womanhood; the youngest being John M. ROTAN, now of Kinmundy, ILL. Of the three children born to Willis and Cynthia SMITH, the first died in infancy, George W. being the second and Randolph SMITH the youngest. George W. was educated in the common schools and at the Plattsburg College, of Missouri. He adopted the profession of teacher, and during an experience of fifteen years in Clay County established a reputation as an able educator. He retired from the profession in 1883, having the three years proceeding been the Principal of the public school of Flora. In 1873, he was appointed to the office of County Superintendent of Schools of Clay County, to fill the unexpired term occassioned by the resignation of J. H. Songer. In 1874, he was elected to the same office, and was in 1877 again the choice of the people, in which office he served with acceptance until the fall of 1882, an aggregate term of nine years. He is now Police Magistrate of the village of Flora, and is doing a thriving business in insurance and real estate. He was married in Louisville, ILL., April 9, 1875 to Miss Nora DAVID, daughter of James and Elizabeth ( ADAMS) DAVID, the former deceased and the latter the wife of Judge L.S. Hopkins, of Louisville. Mrs Nora SMITH was born October 20, 1852 in Indiana. They have had but two children, viz., Randolph, born September 18, 1876, died November 9, 1878; and Nell SMITH, born March 3, 1880. Mr and Mrs SMITH are members of the M. E. Church, and he of the Masonic order. Willis SMITH, father of George W. and Randolph SMITH, died in 1850, of cholera, while en route for California.

--------------------------------------------------

William E. ROTAN married 1) Sarah GRAY in 1854 in Mo and 2) Sarah J. OLIVER in 1865 in IL. According to the info we have found the SMITHs and/or ROTANs lived in Marion and Clay Counties in IL and in Platte, Clinton, Worth, and Gentry Counties in MO. We have been able to find out that their mother Cynthia (JONES) ROTAN / SMITH had a brother Middleton R. JONES who married Elizabeth BURPO and that Fannie FRAZIER and Byron JONES were the parents of Middleton JONES and Cynthia (JONES) ROTAN/SMITH. We would appreciate any help you can give us on any of the above individuals. Thanks Nancy nannu@webtv.net

This is a re-post of a previous query. Looking for information on the GANNAWAY family that moved from Breckinridge and Hardin Co KY to Gentry Co MO. The first I know of is Martha Jane GANNAWAY and her husband ALAN ADKISSON who left KY in 1852 and moved first to Macon Co MO and then to Gentry Co. Their descendants have the surname PRATT and DUNCAN. Later, I believe Marthaīs nephew, Horace W. GANNAWAY moved to McFall. It appears his wife was DīEtta Lowe (but I have that from a handwritten source that is difficult to read). Horace had a son, Marion, who died in 1934 in Chamberlain, SD but was probably buried in McFall. Would love to hear from any other GANNAWAY or related family researchers.

Hello everyone,
I am researching my BOGLE line. My interest today is in Jahial BOGLE, b. 1815 in Iredell Co, NC. He moved to Gentry Co, MO prior to 1855. He was married to Elsey Louisia (surname unknown). Information given to me by a distant cousin says that Jahial BOGLE moved to Missouri with his brother James J BOGLE, his sister Isabella BOGLE BRYSON, and Isabellaīs husband Samuel BRYSON and that Jahial BOGLE was a judge in the BOGLE township.

I am interested in Elsey Louisiaīs last name and the children of Jahial BOGLE and Elsey Louisia. I am also very interested in corresponding with all of my distant cousins. Thank You. Janet

My great grandmotherīs brother immigrated from England in 1867/69 and settled near Stanberry in Gentry County. He lived there over fifty years and raised several children. His name is Joseph WILLETT. One son, Fred WILLETT operated a shoe shop/saddlery in Albany or Bethany. My great grandmother is Eliza WILLETT Roberts and she and her husband homesteaded in Texas. She immigrated in 1887. Their brother Frederick was Veterinary Surgeon appointed to HRH Queen Victoria. Fascinating new line as we did not know Elizaīs brother Joseph also immigrated. I grew up near Cameron MO. Small world.
Hope to hear from someone on this...
Thank you: Bob Long
