Linda Jane Hill Jones                                                           19 July 9:32:20  1997                    McWATERS:   I have a letter written which was written in 1860 by my great great grandmother, Mary Jane Salmon McWaters. Although she signs her name with a double T as McWatters, the correct spelling was probably McWaters with one T.  Her letter is to her sister Amanda Journey. At the top, Cedar County, Mo is clearly written along with the date: July 29th, 1860. It's a wonderful two page letter. She speaks of the hard times that they are having. Her husband was Hugh W. McWaters, and her children were named John, William, Hugh, Albert, Rosalie, Elizabeth, Amanda, Virginia and Joseph. Joseph is my great grandfather who was adopted by another couple soon after this letter was written. Seems as though something horrible happened and the family was split up. Joseph carried this letter around in his pocket his whole life and never saw any of his family again. I am trying to find out what happened to the family. She writes they have about 25 acres, all bottom land. Do you know of a Bee Creek? I know that I've heard of a Bear Creek. Could this be the same? I read a news article written in the Jefferson City Newspaper, Friday, January 1, 1875 that talks about a "Terrible McWaters" that was going to prison in Nebraska City for being a murderer after a long history of riding with the proslavery raiders in Kansas, riding with Bill Anderson, John and Fletch Taylor and other "desperate bushwackers." His name was William McWaters. Also said his mother was a Kentucky woman.  As the article continues, "soon after the rebellion broke out he joind a company of the boys who burnt the Platte bridge and precipitated a Hannibla and St. Jo Railroad train into an awful chasm, killing many of the passengers, because Federal soldiers were among them. The he enlisted with Jim Giddins' band, and fought under General Price for six months. On coming back home to Bee Creek (Bear Creek?) he found the familly residence burnt, his father and brother killed by the militia, and the rest of the family driven off in banishment.   If this William McWaters is really the brother of Joseph, my great grandfather, then the story of the family being banished might account for  the adoption of Joseph who was only 2 or 3 at the time. I've looked for Mary McWaters in the 1870 census all over Missouri. I wonder if she could haved died in Cedar County. In short, I'm looking for any information about this family. Hope someone out there has heard of them. Thank you,
