CASKEY, Edith Irene (1912 -1994)

Edith Irene Caskey, 82, of Butler, MO., died Dec. 19,1994 at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler. The funeral was held Dec. 21 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, with Rev. Othal Hodson officiating, and Rev. Don Stephens assisting. The family suggests contribution to the American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society or charity of choice. Mrs. Caskey was born Oct. 1, 1912 to Ira Oliver and Anna Lucille Rainey Anderson in Prescott, Kan. One of 11 children, she spent part of her childhood in rural Prescott, Kan., before moving to Hume, MO., in the 1920s. On Oct. 10, 1931 she married James Alfred Caskey, and to this union five children were born. Because of husband employment at Peabody Coal Company, she moved to Freeberg, Ill., in 1957; to Forsythe, Mont., in 1970; and to Butler in 1974. She was a member of the Foster Chapter 445 Order of Eastern Star, and the First Baptist Church of Butler. She leaves her husband of the home; a daughter Velma May and husband Edward T.C., of Lansing, Kan.; four sons, Mayor J. Robert Caskey and wife, Alice, of Windsor, MO., Leon Caskey and wife, Shirley, of Clinton, MO., Sen. Harold L. Caskey and wife, Kay, of Butler, and Judge Ray Lee Caskey and wife, Jeri Leigh, of Alton, Mo.; two brothers, Charles Anderson of Columbia, MO., and Kenneth Anderson and wife, Frances, of Drexel, MO.; two sisters, Betty Barker of Fort Scott, Kan., and Virginia Finley of Hume, MO.; nine grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Jesse "Bus", and Merle; two infant brothers; and a sister Ruby Billingsley.

James Alfred Caskey, 91, Butler, Mo., died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003 at Bates County Memorial Hospital, Butler. Services were Feb. 1 at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler, with the Rev. Othal Hodson officiating and Masonic Services by Art Zellmer. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. Memorial contributions may be made to Home Bound Meals Fund c/o Butler Senior Citizens Center, 611 West Mill St., Butler, MO. 64730.
Mr. Caskey was born Jan. 2, 1912 in Webber, Kan., to Ira and Daisy Adaline Grahm Caskey. One of five children he moved with his parents to
Hume, MO., shortly after he was born. On Oct. 10, 1931 he was married Edith Irene Anderson who proceded him in death on Dec. 19, 1994. To this union a daughter and four sons were born. He worked as a section crew member for the Kansas City Southern Railroad out of Hume until 1942 when he began his long time employment for Hume Sinclair Coal Company. His first assignment was at Tiger Mine near the Missouri - Kansas line in the pit and on and around the Marion 5560 shovel-the world's largest stripper and in 1948 was advanced to night superintendent. In 1957 he left for River King Peabody Coal Mine near the Missouri-Kansas line in Freeberg, Ill., where he was promoted to Superintentdent, and after 13 years, assumed the duties of Superintendent at Big Sky Mine in Colstrip Mont. He was transferred back to Missouri in 1974 and was Suprtintendent at Power Peabody Coal Mine at Montrose, MO., until his retirement on July 31, 1978. Mr. Caskey was a Third Degree Mason and served as Past Master in the Blue Lodge of both Hume and Foster, was a 32nd Degree in the Scottish Rite of Kansas City and has received his 50-year pin from the Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star. He was a member of the Butler First Baptist Church. Fishing, huntung duck and goose were favorite pastimes as well as working in his vegetable garden, strawberry patch and apple tree orchard. During the past few years he enjoyed meals and fellowship at the Butler Senior Citizens Center where the family has established a memorial. he was always a great supporter of his children's political aspirations and continued his wife's tradition of making pecan pies. He a daughter Velma May and husband Edward T.C., of Lansing, Kan.; four sons, Mayor J. Robert Caskey and wife, Alice, of Windsor, MO., Leon Caskey and wife, Shirley, of Clinton, MO., Sen. Harold L. Caskey and wife, Kay, of Butler, and Judge Ray Lee Caskey and wife, Jeri Leigh, of Alton, Mo.; three sister-in-law, Marion Caskey, North Kansas City, MO., Virginia Finley, Hume, and Betty Barker, Fort Scott, Kan.; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Anderson and wife Frances, Drexel, MO.; eight grand children; 16 great grand children; and serveral nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Irene; grand daughter Linda May Shaffer; brother Ira Jr. Caskey; and three sisters Thelma Weicher, Myrtle Garrett and Goldie Allen. The family wishes to thank Dr. William Haynie and stuff; the home care givers; Bates County Memorial Hospital staff, Home Health; Chuck Cantrell and Judith Wackerman for thier care, concern and attention.
