Scarbrough, William Riley -

(Watson news bv Mrs. V. L. Herren) OBITUARY
William Riley Scarbrough was born near Mount Vernon, Kentucky, Decemlber 15, 1868, and passed away Sunday, January 25, 1948, at the age of 79 years. He was married to Mary Jane Morgan at Dripping Springs, Kentucky, on January 23, 1888. To this union were born five children, Ted of Chicago, Charles of Laramie, Wyoming, Mrs. Cecil Weidman of Watson, Homer of Wichita, Kansas, and Mrs. Eldon Beck of Warnego, Kansas. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and nine great -grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
His wife preceded him in death in 1934. Mr. and Mrs. Scarbrough, with the two older children, came from Kentucky to the Watson community in 1893. With the exception of four years they lived in Plattsmouth, Nebraska, this has been their home. Mr. Scarbrough was one of the organizers of the Baptist church in Watson and was its first superintendent. He remained a member of the church throughout his lifetime.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 28, and burial was in the High Creek cemetery. Services were in charge of' Rev. A. W. Tandy. Feb 5, 1948

Sauceman, John A. and wife, Ada Grace Hughes

Private funeral services were held at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Price funeral home for Mr and Mrs J.A. Sauceman of 522 North Market street. The Rev Walter B. Morgan officiated.

John A. Sauceman was born in Morristown, tenn, Nov 20, 1874, the youngest son of John A. and Emma Sauceman. At the age of 19 he came to Missouri and settled in Atchison county, engaging in farming until 1923. During that year he moved to Tarkio and entered the retail business.

In 1933 he moved to Maryville, where he was again engaged in retail business until his retirement two years ago.

Ada Grace Hughes was born at Rock Port, Mo., April 25, 1879, the daughter of Mr and Mrs George L. Hughes. Here she spent the earlier years of her life. Later the family moved to a farm near Tarkio.

Mr and Mrs Sauceman were married December 23, 1898. To this union four children were born, Paul H. of Des Moines, Ia, Helen R. Clymens of Maryville, George W. of Denver, Colo, and a daughter, Marjorie Rose who died November 21, 1937, at the age of 12. There are three grandchildren, James A. Sauceman of Des Moines, Ia, and Martha and Sue Clymens of Maryville.

Surviving Mr Sauceman are three brothers, R.W. Saucemana nd W.T. Sauceman of Maryville, and the Rev C.H. Sauceman of Braymer, Mo, and two sisters, Mrs Elizabeth Updike of Maryville and Mrs Ruth Sizman? of Elk Creek, Mo.

Mrs Sauceman is survived by two sisters, Miss Bessie Hughes of Tarkio, Mo and Mrs Fred Barnes of Shenandoah, Ia.

Mr and Mrs Sauceman were lifelong members of the Methodist church. Until they were prevented by failing health, both were active in Sunday School and Church work, locally and in the county.

Any who has been in the Sauceman home knows the love and devotion they felt for one another. Through all their years Mr Sauceman's first thought was for his home and family.

It was Mrs Sauceman's desire to live and to take care of him until the end: then she was ready to go. It was not until he suffered a slight stroke in December that he became despondent and worried constantly about himself and her future.

Their self-sacrifice and untiring devotion to others will long be remembered by all who knew them.

Pall bearers were Ed Niewald, Roy Curfman, Ray Eckles, Clyde Bliss, Harry Jones, Lester Hagee, Alvin Miller, Leo Sturm, Ralph Hotchkin, Russell McNulty, Clayde Templeton and Ben Smith.

Schoonover, Lena Bertha Erdman, the daughter of Julius and Ann Richte Erdman was born in Benkelman, Nebraska on March 28, 1908. At the age of three, she and her family moved by train to Langdon, Missouri. She attended Benton Center Schools at Langdon.

Lena was baptized in Benkelman on July 28, 1908 and confirmed April 27, 1924 by Reverend E.H. Gillman at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Langdon. She taught Sunday School from an early age. She belonged to the Langdon Ladies Aid at St. Peters and then the WELCA Circle at First Lutheran in Rock Port, where she was a member. She was a member of the Peg-Away Club and the Ladies Association of Hunter Cemetery.

On January 11, 1931 she was united in marriage to George Schoonover at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Langdon by Reverend E.H. Gillman. They lived all their married life in the Langdon, Rock Port area. George passed away February 29, 1980. Lena passed away October 30, 2007 at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port at the age of 99 years.

Lena was a housewife and worked at the Opp Hotel for 14 years. She enjoyed gardening, working in her flowers and loved to bake pies. She was a big fan of the Cubs baseball team.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband George Schoonover; an infant son; son George Schoonover, Jr.; son-in-law Wayne Rosenbohm and daughter-in-law Margaret Schoonover; three brothers, Jacob Erdman, Freddie Erdman and Julius Erdman; three sisters, Agusta Palm, Mary Poppa and Carrie Horton.

Lena is survived by daughters Betty Henry and her husband Bill, Yuma, Arizona, Shirley Mather and her husband Dean and Janice Murry and her husband Ed, all of Rock Port; sons Robert Schoonover, Stockbridge, Georgia and Dean Schoonover and his wife Shirley, Rock Port; one brother Carl Erdman, Rock Port; eleven grandchildren; twenty-one great-children and seven great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Services: Friday, November 2, 2007 at 2:30 pm, First Lutheran Church, Rock Port.
Burial: Hunter Cemetery, Rock Port.
Family Visitation: Thursday, November 1, 2007 from 7:00 – 8:00 pm at the Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port.
Memorials: WELCA or the Rock Port Nutrition Center, Rock Port.

Schroeder, Elvin W. "Al" -

Elvin W. "Al" Schroeder was born July 15, 1921 in Langdon, Mo., the son of Henry and Helen (Bressert) Schroeder. He died June 7, 1994 at the North Suburban Hospital in Thornton, Colo, at the age of 72 years, 10 months and 23 days.
In his youth he attended the Lincoln School near Nishnabotna, Mo. and at the age of 12 began farming with his uncles, Virgil Rosenbohm and Dick Miller.
On-October, 14, 1939 he was united in marriage to Eva Irene Homes at the Baptist Church in Rock Port, Mo. by Judge H.P. Savage. In 1940 Al established his own farming operation in Atchison County and continued to farm all their life.
He was baptized November 14,1948 and remained a member of the Rock Port Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife Eva, of the home near Rock Port; his daughter, Beverly Hendrickson of Arvada, Colo.; one grandson; two sisters, Ethel Meyer, Antioch, Ill. and Theda Dunbar, Waukegan, Ill.; half brother, Richard Bade, Kansas City, Mo.
Preceding him in death besides his parents were one brother, Marion Schroeder.
Funeral services were held June 11 at the Baptist Church in Rock Port with Carroll Fischer officiating. Interment was in High Creek Cemetery. Jun 16, 1994

Sell, Virginia Dymond Hicks -

Graveside services were held at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax, on Saturday, September 16, 2000, at 2 p.m. for Virginia Sell of Tabor, Iowa. Rev. Glenn Scott officiating. Services were under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax.
Virginia Sell, age 72, passed away on Wednesday, September 13, 2000, in Omaha, NE. She was born in Atchison County on February 27, 1928, to Earl and Jessie Dymond.
Virginia had lived in Rock Port, Missouri, Fairfax, and Tarkio, Missouri, before moving to Tabor, where she had lived for the past 30 years. She attended school in Rock Port and Fairfax, where she graduated with the class of 1945. On March 9,1946, she was married to Clovis M. Hicks and he passed away on May 27, 1965. Virginia married Charles E. Sell on January 3, 1970. He passed away in September of 1998. Virginia was a housewife and a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, Melvin Hicks, Tarkio and Robert Hicks, Tabor; a stepson, Martin Sell, Glenwood, Iowa; one brother, Dean Dymond, Eagle Rock, Missouri; and two grandchildren.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; one brother, Edward Dymond; and two sisters, Dorothy Davis and Helen. Memorials may be made to Tabor Fire and Rescue. Sept 28, 2000

 

Shandy, Don Philip, the son of Phil Elmo and Marie Elizabeth (Vanderslice) Shandy was born June 25, 1930 in Phelps City, Missouri. He graduated from Rock Port High School in 1947. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and during his basic training in Ft. Belvoir, Virginia he learned the craft of Lithography. After basic training he was sent to Eta Jima, Japan where he gained his love for snow skiing, sushi and Sapporo beer. He served in the Korean War and at one point produced and delivered strategic maps to General Douglas MacArthur for the Inchon Invasion. Later during his service he was stationed in North Carolina during the Berlin Missile Crisis. Don completed his 40 year military career at the Presidio in San Francisco as a Chief Warrant Officer.

Don married Eileen O'Leary in San Francisco where he lived until 1958, they then moved to their first newly built home in San Bruno. Don and Eileen were married for 52 years.

Don loved California and enjoyed all it had to offer; the snow skiing at Mt. Shasta, skidooing in Mi-Wuk and skin diving along the California Coast. He enjoyed waterskiing at the nearby Lake Berryesa and fishing in the San Francisco Bay. He held onto his childhood love for hunting and beagles. He loved to walk the beautiful mountains surrounding Yosemite and Kennedy meadows. He taught all of his kids and grandkids how to ride motorcycles, which he loved to ride all along the Santa Cruz Mountains and coast sides with friends and family.

With help from his brothers, J.W. & Walter, nephews, Bill, Wayne and Jimmie and close dear friends, he built "Shandy's Shanty" A.K.A. "Papa's Mountain House". This memory filled cabin in Mi-Wuk Village is located in the Sierra Nevadas and is the surrounds for many a wild adventure and Shandy Reunions. His infamous camouflaged International Travelall 4 wheel drive also retired at the Mountain House.

Don was fortunate enough to retire at 50 from lithography, the trade he learned from the Army. He owned his own Shop "Negatorium" for 10 years in the heart of downtown San Francisco. Following retirement he spent time making "Papa's special beef jerky" for the grandkids, enjoying the cabin and watching hours of baseball, softball and dance shows of his first set of grandkids, Shawna and Scott. He continued his enthusiasm for wood working and home improvement by purchasing and repairing several houses in northern and southern California. He loved playing pool with his sons and enjoyed trips to the park with his youngest granddaughter Ava and the happy contagious smiles of his newest grandson. Don passed away Monday, September 11, 2006 at Mills Peninsula Medical Center, Burlingame, California, at the age of 76 years.

Don "Chief" is survived by the Irish eyes of his life "O'Leary", as he endearingly referred to her; one daughter, Donna Healy; two sons, Gordon Shandy and Kevin Shandy; four grandkids, Shawna Healy, Scott Healy, Ava Shandy and Ryan Shandy; son-in-law Brad Healy, daughter-in-law Anne Shandy; one brother, Walter (Trick) Shandy; and two sisters, Naomi Maheu and Joyce Asher; several nieces and nephew.
Besides his parents, Don was preceded in death by three brothers; Calvin, J.W, and Gordon, two nephews; Wesley Shandy and Phil Maheu, and sister-in-law Georgie.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 17, 2006 at the Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port, Missouri, with interment at Millsap Cemetery, Rock Port. Memorials may be directed to the "Make a Wish Foundation". Military rites were held under the direction of the Fort Leavenworth, Kansas Military Funeral Honors Detail.

 

Shaw, Rodney David, the son of Franklin D. (Sonny) and Juliette M. (Bowman) Shaw, was born June 22, 1961 in Fairfax, Missouri. He attended Tarkio schools and graduated from Tarkio High School in 1979. He was then employed by Dan Smith, servicing trucks in Tarkio.

On June 20, 1981, Rodney was united in marriage to Lesa Ann Schaefer at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Shenandoah, Iowa. They made their home east of Tarkio, where Rodney farmed for Bill Erdman from 1981 to 1989. During 1989, Rodney was employed by Bill Miller Trucking in Shenandoah and in 1991, for Blaine Brought Trucking, Tarkio. In 1994, Rodney purchased his own truck and became self employed. In 2003, he was employed by Bar – Tran in Rock Port, Missouri, until 2006, when ill health forced his retirement.

Rodney enjoyed trucking, cooking, fixing things, and attending tractor pulls and truck shows, but his true love was spending time with Lesa, his children and grandchildren on their new deck around their house. He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Tarkio. Rodney passed away May 26, 2007 at Bryan LGH East Hospital, Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 45 years.

Besides his parents, Rodney was preceded in death by one niece Paige Balle.Survivors include, his wife, Lesa, of their home; one son and his wife, Brandon and Prescilla Shaw, one daughter, Telesa Shaw, all of Westboro; two brothers, Tim Shaw and wife Sheree, Westboro, and Mike Shaw and wife,Teresa, Tarkio; one sister and husband, Angie and Ronald Balle, Burlington Junction, Missouri; father-in-law, Vernon Schaefer, Jr. and his wife, Linda, Tarkio, mother-in-law, Nancy McComb and her husband, Bob, Shenandoah; grandfather-in-law, Vernon Schaefer, Sr., Westboro; nieces, Shannon Shaw, Andrea Cox, Jill Heitz, Catelyn Walker, Lindsay, Lacie and Lea Peregrine, and Payton Schaefer; nephews, Heith Shaw, Keaton and Connor Shaw and Charlie Walker; great niece, Julia Cox; sisters-in-law, Jamie Walker and husband, Chuck, Helena, Missouri, Wendy Peregrine and husband, Brian, Westboro; brother-in-law, Tony Schaefer, Rock Port.

Sheppard, Marjorie Coe, was born September 18, 1921 in Fairfax, Missouri, the daughter of Earle Sutherland Coe and Kathleen (Quick) Coe. She was educated in Tarkio schools. She graduated from Tarkio High School, Stephens College, of Columbia, Missouri and attended the University of Missouri also in Columbia.

On June 21, 1941, Marge was united in marriage to Charles W. Sheppard. After a short time in Richmond, Missouri and Kansas City, Missouri; Marge and Chuck raised their four children in Tarkio. Marge was very active in community activities. A devoted member of the United Methodist Church of Tarkio, she was a past president of U.M.W. She was a member and past president of Tarkio Chapter FF of the P.E. O. Sisterhood. She was the first Director of the Red Cross Swimming Program at the Tarkio Pool, completing her Water Safety Instructor certification in Okoboji, Iowa. Marge was also instrumental in the initiation of the Mule Barn Theater Guild. She spent many hours as a Girl Scout leader and on Garden Club projects. Marge loved to fly; she loved horses and devoted endless hours in leadership capacities for the Rodeo Association and the Tarkio Rough Riders. Many summers were spent trailering horses and daughters to area horse show events. She was also known as the “First Lady of Tarkio” while Chuck served as Mayor of Tarkio for 15 years.

Marge was a wonderful wife and mother. She loved to entertain and possessed the gift of hospitality. She was well known for her smile and homemade pies. She was a loving grandmother and loved sitting poolside on her deck watching and supervising her grandchildren in the pool. Marge passed away on July 18, 2008 at Northview Manor in Tarkio with her husband, Chuck and daughter, Elaine by her side.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister and soul mate, Katie

Survivors include her husband Chuck of 67 years, daughter Kathy Caves and husband, Tom, Monterey, California, son, Steve Sheppard and wife, Vicki, Asheville, North Carolina, daughters, Elaine Broermann, and husband, Gregg, Shenandoah, Iowa, and Dianne Bessert and husband, Barry, of Fort Collins, Colorado, 14 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and expecting two soon, brother Ryland Coe and wife, Ardis of Roswell, Georgia.

Shirk, William R. "Bill", 68 of Independence, MO, passed away at his home surrounded by family.

Memorial services will be at 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 8, 2006 at Parklawn Funeral Home. Friends may call from 5:00-7:00 Friday at the chapel. Bill was preceded in death by his father, William H. Shirk, mother Helen, sisters Peggy Jones and Patty Smith.

Bill was blessed with many new and long-time friends. After serving in the Navy, Bill became a teamster working for Safeway, Food Barn and Fleming Foods. Bill retired with 30 years in Local 955. After retirement, Bill worked part-time for the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority.

Siddens, Dena Mae Brown, the daughter of Jean Calvin and Mary N. (Collins) Brown, was born September 7, 1948 in Hamburg, Iowa. She attended Sunny Slope Country School northwest of Rock Port and graduated from Rock Port High School in 1966.

On January 11, 1968, she was united in marriage to William Curtis Siddens at the United Methodist Church in Hamburg, Iowa. To this union one son was born, Curtis Shayne. Dena passed away on March 2, 2007 at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port, Missouri, at the age of 58 years.

Dena enjoyed cooking for Curt and her many friends. She enjoyed going to Hoot Owl Bend to visit and camp. Dena loved to fish and be out on the Mighty Muddy MO, even though she was scared of being in the water. She made her home in numerous places throughout her life, but was currently residing in her childhood home northwest of Rock Port.

Curt and Dena met in the third grade and started dating when they were 16. Her family was her life. Sam, her daughter-in-law introduced her to reading, and she seemed to always have her nose in a book. She also enjoyed watching "The Food Network", especially Paula Deen. She was an integral part of the "Operation Jason" fund-raiser and had been involved every year for 14 years.

Survivors include her husband, William Curtis; one son and daughter-in-law, Curtis Shayne and Samantha Siddens, all of Rock Port; one sister Carolyn Price and her husband Marvin, Lincoln, Nebraska; her father Jean Brown, Wilbur, Nebraska; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and her many, many friends.

She is preceded in death by her mother Mary N. Brown, in-laws William Harvey and Ina Mae Siddens, and infant brother, Carl Brown.

Simonds, Roy Lee, the son of Roy Sylvester and Lefa (Barger) Simonds, was born on December 6, 1923 in Rock Port, Missouri. He graduated from Lafayette High School in St. Joseph, Missouri.

On April 30, 1943 Roy entered the United States Army and served his country during World War II. After receiving his honorable discharge on January 21, 1946, Roy moved to Rolla, Missouri where he attended college, receiving his Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering. After completing his education, he moved to Tokyo, Japan.

On January 10, 1955, Roy was united in marriage to Sumiko Kawasyma, in Tokyo. They returned to the United States in 1957 and made their home in St. Joseph and numerous other communities. In 1960, they moved to Orlando, Florida where they lived to the present time. Roy passed away October 21, 2007 at Health Central, Ocoee, Florida, at the age of 83 years.

Besides his parents, Roy is preceded in death by two brothers; Alfred and Arnold Brown Simonds, and one sister; Lois Kelley. Roy is survived by his wife, Sumiko of the home, Orlando; two nephews John Kelley and his wife Annette, Boone, Iowa, and Joe Kelley and his wife Joyce, Glenwood, Minnesota.

Slemp, Louise Deaton Russell was born September 12, 1954, in Hazard, Kentucky, the daughter of Oscar and Mary Louise (Allen) Deaton, Sr. In her early years, she moved with her family to Elkton, Maryland, where she attended school.

Louise was united in marriage to Oral Francis Russell in 1979. They resided in Perryville, Maryland, before moving to Ipava, Illinois. Louise loved children and drove a bus for Head Start and cared for many children. After moving to Illinois, she earned her CNA degree and worked for several years caring for many people. Mr. Russell passed away February 13, 1993.

Louise was united in marriage to Ralph Slemp on October 2, 1997. They made their home in Perryville. After their marriage, Louise worked as a bartender for the VFW. In July of 2005, they moved to Tarkio, Missouri, where they have resided to the present time. Louise passed away Saturday, November 11, 2006, at the Oregon Care Center in Oregon, Missouri, at the age of 52 years.

Louise will be remembered as a loving wife and mother, who loved to sing country music with her family. She was loved by all and spread love and joy with everyone she met. Louise was extremely creative with flower arranging and working with arts and crafts, and she enjoyed her collection of unusual clowns. Louise was a member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries.

Louise was preceded in death by her parents; and her first husband. Louise is survived by her husband, Ralph, of the home in Tarkio; three sons, Anthony Potter, Sr., Thayer, Missouri, Kenneth Allen Potter, Newark, Delaware, and Christopher Michael Russell, Hagerstown, Maryland; daughter, Jennifer Malott, Marceline, Missouri; stepchildren, Steve Russell, Alice Neal, Donald Russell, Don Sies, and Kristin Slemp; brother, Oscar Deaton, Jr.; sisters, Lula B. Merchant and Julia Marie Deaton; and 21 grandchildren.

Graveside services and Burial were held Tuesday November 14, 2006 at Home Cemetery, Tarkio. Memorials may be directed to the Louise Slemp Memorial Fund. Services under the direction of Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio.
Smith, Juanita Diane Dienstbier, the daughter of Gearhart A. and Juanita (Irwin) Dienstbier, was born June 24, 1942 in St. Joseph, Missouri. Diane attended Lafayette High School in St. Joseph, graduating in 1960. Later that same year, Diane was united in marriage to Glenn Littles and they made their home in St. Joseph. To this union, three daughters were born. Diane was employed by numerous businesses and the City of St. Joseph as a secretary.
In 1979, they moved to Mound City, Missouri where she held the position of Manager of the Cameron Savings and Loan for 3 years. In 1981, they moved to Rock Port where she was a bookkeeper for True Ag and Dr. Jeffrey Powell. From 1990 to 1995, they owned and operated "The Still" Deli & Tobacco Store. Glenn and Diane were later divorced.

On September 15, 2001 Diane was united in marriage to William Henry (Hank) Smith. They made their home in Rock Port until 2003, when they moved to Tarkio, where they have resided to the present time. Diane and Hank loved going to the Missouri River to camp and fish. This was one of many places where Diane touched people's lives, while sharing her faith and love for Jesus Christ. Diane passed away May 4, 2007 in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 64 years.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Rock Port, where she taught Sunday school for many years. Diane also enjoyed singing in the choir. She also greatly enjoyed swimming and was a Water Safety Instructor for many years while living in St. Joseph.

Diane is survived by her husband, Hank, Tarkio; three daughters and their husbands, Debbie and Roger Guilford, Tarkio, Lisa and Mark Wilczek, Rock Port, Lori and Rod McKinney, Maryville, Missouri; three step-daughters, Susan Smith, Rogersville, Missouri, Melissa White, Tarkio, and Erica Taylor, St. Joseph; ten grandchildren; one sister, Judith Rockhold and husband Tom, Lexington, Missouri; two brothers, Gary Dienstbier and Dale Dienstbier, both of St. Joseph.

Besides her parents, Diane was preceded in death by numerous aunts and uncles.

The family will receive friends Friday, May 11, 2007 from 10:30 to 11:30 am at the Minter Funeral Chapel in Rock Port. There will be no memorial service, and a private family inurnment will be held at a later date. Snyder, Carolyn A. Stickerod, 84, (formerly of Rock Port, Missouri, died Wednesday, March 21, 2007 at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, Mississippi. She was born May 4, 1922, in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of the late Charles and Louise Jones Stickerod.

On July 10, 1949 she was united in marriage to Versie A. Snyder in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

Carolyn was a graduate of Rock Port High School, Rock Port, Missouri, the Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, Missouri and the University of Mississippi, Oxford, Mississippi. She was a dedicated school teacher, retiring from the Houston Public School System, Houston, Mississippi after 36 years.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Houston and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Survivors include her sister, Charlotte Garland and her husband, Velmer, Darlington, Missouri; three nephews, Steven Garland and wife Lynda, and their children, Ruslan, Ivan and Ludmilla, Prince Frederick, Maryland, David Garland and wife Jerri, and son, Justin Garland, Darlington, and Evan Haynes and wife Karyn and their daughter Sophia Haynes, Aurora, Colorado, one niece, Lynne Haynes Tucker, and daughter Lyndsay Tucker, Palo Alto, California.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Versie A. Snyder, and sister Lydia Haynes.

Sparks, Sharon Kay Loeffler, the daughter of Albert and Lela (Gold) Loeffler, was born February 16, 1949 in Sharpsburg, Iowa. Sharon attended school in Ravenwood Missouri, graduating from Ravenwood High School in 1967. She was then employed at the A & W Drive-in and Wards Drive-in as a car hop and waitress, and later the Kings Cafe and Truck Stop, all in Maryville, Missouri.

On July 8, 1967, Sharon was united in marriage to Gary A. Sparks at the Baptist Church in Maryville. They made their home in Tarkio, where Sharon worked as a cook and waitress in numerous restaurants and cafe's in the area. A few of them included the Coach House and the Top Kick in Rock Port, the Blue Moon Bar and Grill, the Wagon Wheel, the Tarkio College cafeteria and the Walnut Inn, all in Tarkio. Sharon was later employed by Grebe's Machine Shop as a parts lady and bookkeeper, by Big A Auto Parts, and most recently as a part-time cashier and bookkeeper at Pamida, also in Tarkio. In 1986, Sharon and Gary opened Sparks Hunting and Fishing Shop in their home on Elm Street. They later moved the shop into the garage behind their home, which remains open to the present time.

Sharon passed away Thursday, July 27, 2006 at Heartland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph, Missouri at the age of 57 years.

Survivors include her husband, Gary, of the home, Tarkio; two sons, Gary R Sparks and his wife, Donna and Wayne Sparks, all of Tarkio; one daughter, Melinda Curtis and her husband D.J., Rock Port; special family friend, Clint Lambert, Hiawatha, Kansas; eight grandchildren, Billy, Robert, Caci, Shaylee, Donna Marie, Asia, Alexis and Zavien; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Sharon was preceded in death by one brother Robert Loeffler.

Services were held Wed. August 2, 2006 at 1:30 pm, at Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio, with interment at Home cemetery, Tarkio. Memorials may be directed to the Sparks Hunting and Fishing Shop, Tarkio.

Staniford, Mrs Ed - NORTHBORO, March 2-- Funeral service for Mrs Ed Staniford, 75, who died Feb 24 [1964], was held at Tarkio, Mo, with burial there Feb 26. Her husband preceded her in death five years ago. She is survived by one brother, Ross Parks, of Anaheim, Calif, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral home furnished the music. Pallbearers were Keith Gibson, John Darby, Leonard Gell, Morris Richards, Byron Scotton and Karl Boylan. The Rev Clyde King officiated.

Stevens, Roy
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, January 16, 1995, at Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio for Roy B. Stevens of Table Rock, Nebraska. Reverend Dan Rowlison officiated. Interment was made in Center Grove Cemetery in Westboro, Missouri. 
Roy B. Stevens, age 56, passed away Thursday, January 12, 1995, at the Lincoln General Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was born April 7,1938, near Westboro to Frieda Madeline (Layden) and Glenn Alva Stevens. In his early years, Roy attended the North Star Country School northeast of Tarkio and graduated from Westboro High School in Westboro in 1956.
On September 7, 1961, Roy was drafted into the United States Army. He spent one year in Germany and received an honorable discharge on August 28, 1963.

In February of 1964, Roy moved to Table Rock and began working at Binder Brothers Lumber and Ready Mix. On July 2, 1966, he was united in marriage to Patricia Ann Mertes at St. John's Catholic Church in Table Rock. From June 1970 to, the time of his death, Roy worked for Pawnee County as a heavy equipment operator.
Roy served as mayor of Table Rock for two years and was a member of the town board for over 20 years. He enjoyed woodworking, cooking, gardening and fishing and was always available when a neighbor needed a helping hand.
Roy dearly loved his children and grandchildren and will be remembered for his steadfast belief in God. Roy was preceded in death by his father, Glenn, and brother, Max Stevens.
Survivors include: Roy's wife, Patricia, of the home in Table Rock; one son, Christopher Stevens of Westboro; three daughters, Melissa Freeman of Table Rock, Jennifer Stevens of Pawnee City, Nebraska, and Paula Jasa of Steinauery, Nebraska; three grandchildren, Kelly and Paige Freeman and Trevor Jasa; and his mother, Frieda M. Struthers, Dorothy Ann Nielsen, the daughter of John W. and Minnie M. (Guensche) Nielsen, was born July 20, 1929 in Hancock, Iowa. She attended Hancock Rural School and graduated in 1946 from Avoca High School, Avoca, Iowa. For a short time Dorothy was employed by the Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She also worked as a telephone operator at the Avoca Telephone Office, and taught in a one room country school for two years.

On August 10, 1950, Dorothy was united in marriage to Gise W. (Bill) Struthers at the Avoca Lutheran Church. They made their home in Atlantic, Iowa where they farmed for 7 years. In 1966, Bill and Dorothy moved to Rock Port, where in 1972 Dorothy became a dedicated employee of the Rock Port Market. Dorothy passed away Friday, April 19, 2008 at Northview Manor Nursing Home, Tarkio, Missouri at the age of 78 years.

Dorothy was an active member of the First Christian Church in Rock Port and a faithful member of her Wednesday morning Bible study group.

Sundermann, Jason was born in Fairfax, Missouri to D.A. and Carol (Halliday) Sundermann, August 28, 1983. In his early years, he attended Westboro Grade School, Westboro, Missouri. Starting in sixth grade, he attended Tarkio schools, where he later graduated from Tarkio High School in 2002. During his high school career, Jason participated in basketball and football. He was a member of the National Honor Society and excelled in Academic Bowl. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Westboro. Following high school, Jason attended and graduated from Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science in May 2006. While in college, he was a member of the Bridle and Tack Club. Following his graduation, he began work for the Whitestone-Krebs Ranch in Gordon, Nebraska where he was involved in cattle backgrounding. Jason passed away Sunday, November 5, 2006 at the Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center, Denver, Colorado, at the age of 23 years.

Jason was a well loved and highly respected young man among his peers, teachers and community. He excelled both academically and physically all his life, as he was constantly involved in activities at church and at school. He greatly enjoyed his work and spending time with his family, demonstrating his love for livestock and his heart for his parents and siblings. He will be deeply missed by his loving family and all who knew him.

Jason was preceded in death by his grandparents Albert and Clara Sundermann, and aunt Linda Humphrey. He is survived by his parents D.A. and Carol; brother, Ryan and Kevin, and sister, Kaylan Sundermann, all of Westboro; grandparents, David and Bernice Halliday of Tarkio; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Sutter, Matie Viola Gebhards, daughter of John and Ada (Hinricks) Gebhards, was born on September 14, 1916 in Langdon, Missouri. She passed away on Monday, December 11, 2006 at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port, at the age of 90 years. Matie attended Langdon public schools until the eighth grade.

Matie was united in marriage to Evan Leonard Sutter on November 14, 1935. They made their home in Rock Port where Matie enjoyed being a homemaker and mother. Matie took pleasure in tending her flower bed and going to household and yard sales. She also loved to collect glassware.

Matie was a member of the Lone Cedar Club and First Lutheran Church, Rock Port.

Survivors include their two sons, Ronnie Sutter and wife Phyllis, Rock Port, Herbert Darrell Sutter and wife Anita, Fairfax; six grandchildren, Jerry Sutter, Debbie True, Kevin Sutter and wife Shelli, Dayne Sutter, Jennifer LaHue and husband Troy, Tim Sutter and wife Leslie; thirteen great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; one sister Frieda Derrossett; and one sister-in-law Betty Jane Gebhards.

Besides her parents and husband, Matie was preceded in death by her five sisters, Reka, Margaret, Anna, Lula and Rosa and three brothers, Ben, Bill and Herb.

Scalf, Mrs Eldon -

Mrs. Eldon Scalf, 31, passed away on December 6, after an illness of several months. She leaves to mourn, her husband and one daughter. Funeral services were held at Auburn, Nebraska, where the family had made their home, and burial was in the Linden cemetery, near Rock Port. Mrs. Scalf was a general favorite with all and her passing is mourned by a large circle of relatives and friends. Dec 27, 1945

 

Sheldon, Marvin W. -

Marvin W. Sheldon, 81, died at Grape Community Hospital [Hamburg, Ia] Apr. 20. A Rock Port resident, he was employed by Herman Solzman in Hamburg for several years.
Survivors include his wife, Leona; four sons, Steven and John of Hamburg, Philip of Portland, OR and S/Sgt. J James Patrick of Cheyenne, WY; one daughter, Mary Elaine Crist, Colorado Springs, CO; one brother, Wesley Sheldon, Payson, AZ; 14 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two nieces.
Funeral services were held Apr. 23, at Minter Funeral Chapel in Rock Port with Russell Crum officiating.

Interment was at Linden Cemetery.

Sheldon, Marvin W. -

Marvin Wilmot Sheldon, the son of Walter H. and Laura Edna (Wilmot) Sheldon, was born Dec. 26, 1915 near Inavale, NE.   Attending the Red Cloud, NE schools, Marvin graduated high school in 1934.   Moving with his family to Missouri in 1935, Marvin worked for area farmers in Rock Port.
On Oct 2, 1942, Marvin was drafted into the United States Air Force and served his country overseas in Guam. On Feb. 12,1946, Marvin received his honorable discharge at Fort MacArthur, CA and returned to Missouri.
On May 12, 1946 Marvin was united in marriage to Leona Madge Bryant at the Linden Church, Linden, MO. They had five children, Steve, Philip, John, Mary and Pat.
Eventually owning their own farm, Marvin and Leona continued to live in the Linden area.
Marvin died Apr. 20,1997, at the Grape Community Hospital, Hamburg, at the age of 81 years.
Marvin was active in the Church of Christ, and was an ordained elder and Sunday School teacher.
Survivors include his wife, Leona, of the home; four sons: Steven of Hamburg, Philip L., Portland, OR, John W. Hamburg and SSgt. James Patrick, Cheyenne, WY; one daughter, Mary Elaine Crist of Colorado Springs, CO, one brother Wesley Sheldon of Payson, AZ; 14 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two nieces.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were held Apr. 23 at the Minter Funeral Chapel in Rock Port with Pastor Russell Crum officiating. Interment was in Linden Cemetery. May 1, 1997


Shelton, Michael A. -

Michael Alan Shelton, 46, of Shenandoah, died April 5, 2001, died at his home following an extended illness. He was bom Feb. 16, 1955, in San Diego, Calif., to Wesley and Jean (Jones) Shelton. He was a 1973 Shenandoah High School graduate. On June 14,1975, he married Carol Ann Higgins. He was employed at DeKalb, Eatons and John Deere during his working career. His interests included ship building, two of which are display at Expo in Shenandoah.
Mr. Shelton was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
Survivors include his wife Carol Ann of the home; children, Chris, Casey and Beth; grandson, Blake Waters; his mother Jean; sister, Becky Danielson; brother, Herb Shelton; aunts, uncles, numerous cousins and many friends.

Shankel, Clifford Ray -

Clifford Ray Shankel was born Oct. 14, 1927, in Blanchard, Mo., son of Earl and Fae Lefforge Shankel, and died at the St. Francis Hospital in Maryville [Missouri] June 15, 1998. He was 70 years of age. He received his early education in rural Westboro and Blanchard and in 1947 he graduated from high school in Blanchard, Iowa. On Aug. 15,1948, he was united in marriage to Velma Jean Murphy at the home of her parents in Blanchard. Throughout their married life, they lived and farmed in the Elmo, Blanchard and Westboro communities. Clifford and Jean were faithful members of the United Methodist Church in Westboro and enjoyed taking part in all their family's activities. Jean passed away Feb. 13, 1993. Clifford continued to farm until ill heath forced his retirement in 1996. Since December of 1997 he had resided in the Nodaway Nursing Home in Maryville. Clifford was proud of his family and community and always took part in civic affairs. He had served on the Westboro United Methodist Church Board, was a former Westboro School Board Member, 4-H leader and chairman for the Lord's Acre Day and had received the FFA Parent Award and the Centennial Farm Award.
.--He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jean, and an infant grandson. Surviving are two sons, David E. Shankel and his wife Janette, Mesa, Idaho, Bruce C. Shankel, Council, Idaho, two daughters, Linda I. Moore and husband Richard of Maryville, Lora J. Kemery and husband Ronnie of Worth, Mo., seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, an aunt, Erma Nitcher, Ottawa, Kan., and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services were held Friday, June 19, 1998, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Westboro, Mo., with the Rev. Jim Culver giving the words of comfort. Organist was Norma Mattson. Caring for the flowers was Sharon Green. Attending the memory register was Dorothy Green and caring for the memorials was Carol Barnes. Casket bearers were Wayne Nelson, Carroll Green, Alan McNaughton, Roger Bess, Terry Gibbons, Bill Ballinger. Interment was in the Center Grove Cemetery in Westboro. Schebaum, Donald E. -

WESTBORO, Mo. — Donald E. Schebaum, 51, Westboro, died Monday July 9, 1990, at the Fairfax, Mo., hospital.
Born in Champion City, Mo., Mr. Schebaum came to Atchison County, Mo., in 1960. He was a farmer, nursery worker and painter in the Westboro and Tarkio areas.
Surviving are his parents, Harold and Sylvia of Westboro; a son, Edward of Corning, Iowa; a stepson, Butch Swank; two daughters, Brenda McEnaney of Shenandoah; and Kimberly Card of Clarinda; two stepdaughters, Lorie Burmania and Donna Lewis; four brothers: Delmar of Westboro; DeWayne of Oakland; Derrell, Shenandoah; and Dennis, Cameron, Mo.; and five sisters: Norma Weiskoff, Sullivan, Mo.; Wanda Wilson of Busely, La.; Betty Bramble, Red Oak; Elvada Tyler, Skidmore, Mo.; and Debra Driskell, Tarkio, Mo.
Graveside services and burial were held Thursday, July 12, at the Centergrove Cemetery near Westboro.                            Jul 16, 1990


Siddens, William Harvey, son of Eddie D. and Maud (Runyan) Siddens, was born November 12, 1916 in Gentry County, MO. He died Feb. 18, 2003 at the Pleasant View Care Center in Rock Port, MO at the age of 88 years.
As a young boy, he attended the Homer Country School near Tarkio, MO. Following his schooling, he worked for the Low and Luckhardt farms hear Tarkio.
On Sept. 17, 1942, William entered the United States Army and served in the Pacific Theater. On Dec. 18, 1945, he received his honorable discharge.
He was united in marriage to Ina Mae Kirk June 19, 1946, in Troy, KS. They have lived and farmed their entire married life in the Rock Port, MO and Hamburg, IA communities. William retired from farming in 1996. In February of 2001, William and Mae moved to the Air Oaks senior Citizens Housing in Rock Port. In December of 2002, he became a resident of Pleasant View.
William was a former member of the Ralph Greer American Legion Post #49 of Rock Port.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one infant sister.
He is survived by his wife, Ina Mae of Rock Port; one son, William Curtis Siddens, Rock Port; one grandson, four sisters, Helen Scribner, Shenandoah; Kathleen Cowell and Laverne Bogart, both of Galesburg, Ill and Marie Kirk, Hamburg; one brother, Rex Siddens, Rock Port; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Feb. 21 at Minter Funeral Chapel. Pastor Randall Weldy was in charge of services. Burial was at Greenhill Cemetery at Rock Port, MO. Mar 27, 2003

 

Sauceman, Ada Gibson - Mrs.W.T. Sauceman died Sunday, August 25, [1946] at the Mrs. Leon's Convalescent Home in St. Joseph. Mo., and services for the former Westboro resident were held in Maryville on Tuesday at the Price Funeral Home, the body being brought to the Home cemetery in Tarkio for burial.
Ada Gibson Sauceman, daughter of Isaac and Rachel Gibson, was born on a farm near Rock Port on January 9, 1870. She taught school in early life. When a young girl she joined the Christian church at Linden, Mo., and attended church as long as her health would permit.
She was married to W. T. Sauceman on June 30, 1904 at Rock Port. They lived on a farm near Westboro for a good many years, until as Mrs. Sauceman's health began to fail, they moved to town.
She is survived by her husband, who last December went to Maryville to make his home with his sister, Mrs. J. M. Updike, and by a number of nieces and nephews. Her sister, Mrs. Emma Hopkins, preceded her in death last December. Sep 6, 1946

 

Riding out into the storm on the previous Thursday night, Arthur Sanders and the horse he was riding were instantly killed. The accident took place on Henry street between Washington and Main, near the Claude Geyer home. Mr. Geyer saw the man and horse in the street, when he came out of his home Friday morning. He notified the local officials, who in turn notified the county coronor. A coronor's jury turned in the verdict that the man and horse had met their death some time Thursday evening by accidentally being electrocuted. The deceased was a bachelor, aged 48 years, 5 months and 13 days at the time of his death. He was a brother of Robert Sanders of Hamburg. Funeral services were held at Rock Port on Sunday and burial was made in the cemetery at that place. Sep 25, 1931


Walter Frederick Sickman, son of Henry F. and Kathryn Lauman Sickman, was born Feb. 29, 1928, in Atchison County, Missouri, and died Nov. 14, 1997, at his home in Fremont County, Iowa. He was 69 years of age. He grew up in Locust Grove Township, where he received his education at Hillsdale Country School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1954 during the Korean Conflict. On Dec. 21, 1978, Walt was united in marriage with Garnett Hearron at Nebraska City, Neb. Following their marriage they lived in Atchison County until fire destroyed their home and they moved to Locust Grove Township where they lived in St. Paul's Lutheran parsonage. Walt was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church rural Westboro where her remained a faithful member until his death. He was a member of the Eagles Club in Shenandoah. He enjoyed bowling and was one of the charter league members at Taylor Bowl in Shenandoah where had been bowling since 1950.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Henry F. and Kathryn (Lauman) Sickman and a grandson David Protherow. Surviving are two daughters Charlotte Brown and husband Curtis Pickering, Mo., Janette Oberhauser and husband Shane of Maryville, Mo., one son, David Sickman of Maryville, Mo., and two grandchildren, Shannon and Christina Protherow. Also surviving are one brother Wilbur Sickman and wife Helen of Northboro, Iowa, two sisters, Helen Sickman of Shenandoah and Wilma Youngberg and husband Richard of Essex, Iowa, several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Services were held from St. John's Lutheran Church in Westboro, Mo., Monday, Nov. 17, 1997, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Pearson giving the words of comfort. Organist was Carol Sunderman. Caring for the flowers were Melissa Gibson, Marge Sheirbon and Barbara Taylor. Phyllis Kemper cared for the memorials and attending the memory register was Miriam Houchin.
Honorary bearers were Joe Dinville, Doug Gilbert, William Joseph, Sam Lansdown, Carl Mutchler, Jack O'Brien and Glen Sheirbon. Casket bearers were Reldon Bryte, Dale Kemper, Norman Kemper, Ron Saye, Gery Sickman and Junior Taylor. Interment was in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.

Walter F. Sickman, 69, of rural Northboro died at his home Friday, Nov. 14, 1997. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 17, from St. John's Lutheran Church, Westboro, Mo., with the Rev. Richard Pearson officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery. A memorial to St. John's Lutheran Church is being established. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. on Sunday at the Hackett Funeral Home in Shenandoah.

Sharp, Randall Boettner -

Randall Boettner Sharp, died Jan. 22 at the home of his parents, Mildred and Sam Sharp, St. Joseph, MO. He was 40 years old. Randy was a member of the Ashland United Methodist Church of St. Joseph and was a graduate of Baylor University, Waco, TX.
Funeral services were held Jan. 24, at the Ashland United Methodist Church with the Rev. A. McCombs officiating. Interment was in Grange Hall Cemetery. Minter Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements. Jan 26, 1995

 

Sharp, Randall Boettner -

Randall Boettner Sharp, son of Mildred and Sam Sharp, was born January 11, 1955, at Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, AL. He died at his parents' home in St. Joseph, MO. Jan. 22, 1995 at the age of 40 years.
He was a member of the Ashland United Methodist Church of St Joseph.
Randy was an honor graduate of Central High School, St Joseph, in 1973.
In 1978 Randy graduated from Baylor University, Waco, TX., with a Master's degree in Business Administration. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.
After graduation, he took a position with Texaco Oil Company in Houston, TX.
Later he owned and managed his own wholesale foliage plant business.
Randy is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Sharp, aunts, uncles, cousins
and friends. He was preceded in death by one brother, Steven Kyle, 25, in July 1981.
Funeral services were held Jan. 24 at the Ashland United Methodist Church in St. Joseph. The Rev. Robert A. McCombs officiated. Interment was in Grange Hall Cemetery. Minter Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Sloop, John Michael -

Funeral services for John Michael Sloop, 29, will be held at the Rash Funeral Home Thursday at 2 p.m.
Sloop was killed in a pickup accident late Sunday afternoon north of Thurman. Driver of the pickup, Christopher Howell, 27, underwent medical treatment.
The pickup in which they were riding left the road two miles north of Thurman. According to the Iowa Highway Patrol, Howell had apparently lost control when the car left the road and he overcompensated, aimed off the west side of the road and hit a stump. The truck over­turned and Sloop was thrown out Neither was wearing a seat belt.
Sloop was taken by life flight to Omaha, where he was pronounced dead.
Howell was ticketed for failure to maintain control, and driving without wearing a seat belt.
Survivors include his parents, Kathy and John Paul Sloop; four brothers, Kurt Darron, David, and Jason; a grandmother, Margaret Holmes of Rock Port

Sloop, John Michael -

John "Mike" Sloop was born on Apr. 15,1966 to John Paul and Kathryn Sloop at the Community Hospital in Hamburg. Mike lived in Watson, MO until he was four-years-old, then moved with his family to Hamburg. He attended school in Hamburg.
Mike liked to hunt, fish and travel with friends. When he wasn't working as a mechanic or doing odd jobs, he spent his time with his mom and dad in Rock Port He had just returned to Hamburg a week ago from an extended visit there to go to work in Glenwood, IA.
Mike was preceded in death by one sister, Lora Ann, his grandfather Ray Holmes, and grandparents, Paul and Lucina Sloop.
He is survived by his parents, four brothers, Kurt of Tarkio, Damon of Hamburg, David and Jason of Rock Port; grandmother Margaret Holmes of Rock Port, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Held Thurs., Mar. 14, at the Rash Funeral Home with Rev. Norman Walter officiating. Interment was in High Creek Cemetery. Mar 28, 1996

 

Sloop, John Paul -

John Paul Sloop was born in Hamburg, IA, Feb. 7, 1937. He. was one of five sons born to Paul Lewis and Lucina (McNutt) Sloop. John graduated from Hamburg High School in 1954.
On May 10,1963, he married Glenda Kathryn Holmes in Hamburg. They became parents of six children. John worked on highway and bridge construction for many years. He also worked for the former Inter-State Nurseries and Vogel Fertilizer. They noved to Rock Port in 1989.
John died at his home Oct 2, 2002, at the age of 65.
He was preceded in death by lis parents; a daughter, Lora Ann Sloop and one son, John Michael Sloop.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn, of their home; sons Kurtis of Tarkio, MO, Damon of Adel, IA, David of Rock Port and Jason of Lincoln, NE; four brothers, Robert D., Roland D., Keith W., and Larry F., all of Hamburg; seven grandsons, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church in Watson, MO Oct. 5 with the Rev. Eric Anderson officiating. Interment was in High Creek Cemetery. Chamberlain Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Oct 17, 2002

Smith, Abbie A. -

Funeral services for Abbie A. Smith, 69, of Tarkio have been set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, at the. Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio, Mo.
Smith died Wednesday evening, March 5, at Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha following a short illness. She had been employed in Shenandoah for six years.
Officiating at the services will be the Rev. Kim Clark and burial will be at the Tarkio Home Cemetery in Tarkio. A memorial has been established to the Community Hospital in Fairfax, Mo.
Survivors include two sons, Leland W. Smith Jr. of Tarkio and Robert Smith of Shenandoah; one step­daughter Carolyn Bredensteiner of Westboro; five grandchildren; two sisters, Pauline Shelton, Henderson, Ky., and Myrtle Curtrull, Shawnee Town, Ill.; and one brother, Howard Rednour, Henderson, Ky.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Leland Smith Sr.; one son Gregory; three sisters, Ada Lee, Cora and Bertha; and two brothers, Robert and Everett. 1986


Spittler, Glenn Henry -

Glenn Henry Spittler was born February 24, 1922 the son of Benjamin and Ethel (Dennis) Spittler in Hamburg, la. He moved in 1925 with his parents to Watson, MO where he lived until his death August 11, 1990 at the age of 68 years, 5 months, 11 days.
He served with the armed forces on Attu in the Aluction Islands from Nov. 22, 1942 to Nov. 22, 194 [sic] . He received the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with Bronze Star and the Good Conduct medal. On Nov. 26,1949 he was united in marriage to Mary McCall in Maryville, MO. They are the parents of two daughters, Kathryn Spittler of Watson MO; Rita Squires of Rock Port, MO; one son, Martin Jay Million of White Salmon, Wash.
He was a rural mail carrier for 31 years, working routes from both Watson and Rock Port.
Glenn was a forty-three year member of the Masonic Lodge, he was also a member of the American Legion, Commercial. Travelers, Disabled Vets, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Eagles Lodge, and Past President of Rural Letter Carriers Assn.
Survivors besides his wife and three children are his mother, Ethel Ward, Fairfax, MO; three grandchildren; one sister, Dayle Turk, Creston, la; three great-granchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin and his step-father, Ed Ward.
Funeral services were held Aug. 14 at the United Methodist Church in Watson with the Rev. George Owens officiating. Interment was in High Creek Cemetery. Schooler Funeral Home of Fairfax was in charge of services. Aug 30, 1990

Smith, Goldie Mae Beam -

Goldie Mae (Beam) Smith died June 23 at Grape Community Hospital [Hamburg, Ia]. She was 86. She was born in Hamburg and spent her entire life in the area.
Survivors include five daughters: Betty (Mrs. Greg) Chamberlain, Rock Port, Delores (Mrs. Bill) Harrington, Tarkio, Joan (Mrs. Bill) Woodward, Hamburg, Shirley (Mrs. Ed) Hughes and Beverly (Mrs. Jack) Scamman, both of Rock Port; four sisters:. Dorothy Smith, Omaha, Thelma Robinson, Hamburg, Peggy Peck, Council Bluffs, Mary Magel, Sidney; one brother Donald Beam, Hamburg; fifteen grandchildren; twenty great­grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held at the Grange Hall Cemetery with the Rev. Donald Barnett officiating.

 

Smith, Goldie Mae Beam -

Goldie Mae (Beam) Smith was the oldest of ten children born to Frank H. and Catherine E. (Kish) Beam. She was born in Hamburg, Iowa on November 24,1907.
On February 8, 1927 she married Walter A. Smith of Watson and they began farming in Atchison County and remained in this area the rest of their lives.
They became parents of a son who died at birth and five daughters.
Following her husband's death in September of 1984, she has lived in the home of her daughter Shirley Hughes and husband Ed for die majority of the time. She died at Grape Community Hospital June 23, 1994, at the age of 86.
Besides her son and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister Frances Beam; brothers Roy, Cecil and Frederick Beam; and three grandsons, an infant and David and Steven Hughes.

Bertha G. Spoon, 91, of Shenandoah, died June 23, 2000, at the Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah. Graveside services were June 26 at the Home Cemetery in Tarkio, Mo, with the Rev. Marcia Gilbert officiating.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Jerry and Dianne Spoon of Elkhorn, Neb., and three grandchildren, Jerrad Spoon of Elk City, Neb., and Nathan and Mellissa Spoon of Elkhorn, Neb. Smith, Leonard Dean -

Leonard Smith was born near Watson, Feb. 18, 1932, and passed away at the Hamburg hospital on March 28, 1941, aged 9 years, one month and 10 days. Since the death of his mother in 1938, he had made his home with his grandmother, Mrs. Ella Leisure. He was an exceptionally bright child. He attended the Baptist Sunday school and took a great interest in his church. His cheerful, happy disposition won his many friends. He is survived by his father, Jess Smith, of Coin, la., a sister, Crystal Smith, and Grandmother Leisure of Watson, Grandmother Smith of Coin, besides other relatives and a host of friends.
Leonard was badly burned when his clothing caught fire from a flying spark from some burning weeds. He was rushed to the hospital where everything possible was done to save this life, but after a few short hours he slipped away to be with his Savior, who said, "Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of Heaven." The world has been brighter because of his short life, and the memories that will linger through the years will be cherished by his family and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist church conducted by Rev. V. Lambert. Interment was in the
High Creek cemetery. The pall bearers were Roland and James Howlett, Junior Robishaw and Bobbie Gaines.                     Apr 3, 1941

 

Smith, Leonard Dean -

Leonard Dean Smith, 9-year-old son of Jesse Smith of Coin, who isi employed in Shenandoah, died in1, the Hamburg hospital Friday, the result of burns which he suffered in | Watson the night before.
The boy made his home with his grandmother, Mrs. Ella Leisure, in i Watson, ^ mojther having djfid, in. 1938. With his grandmother "they" were engaged in burning out a fence row when, his clothing caught on fire, and .before help could reach him he was badly burned. He was rushed to the hospital and lived just about a day.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Watson Sunday morning, and interment was in the High Creek cemetery. V^S""*-//

Smith, Marvin C. -

Marvin Carol Smith, 62, died June 19,2001, at Nebraska Methodist Hos­pital in Omaha, Neb. He was born April 29,1939, near Burlington Junction, Mo., to Harry G. and Irene D. (Berringer) Smith. He attended schools in southwestern Iowa graduating from Sharpsburg High School in 1957. He served his country in the U.S. Army in 1961 and 1962, receiving a medical ' discharge in 1962. On June 15, 1996, he married Donna R. (Foley) Harris in Craig, Mo. He was a member of the First Church of God in Craig, Mo. He farmed most of his life with his parents near Coin. He learned to yodel and introduced this talent at the First Tarkio Community Gospel Sing in October 1999.
