John A. Sauceman was born in Morristown, tenn, Nov 20, 1874, the youngest son of John A. and Emma Sauceman. At the age of 19 he came to Missouri and settled in Atchison county, engaging in farming until 1923. During that year he moved to Tarkio and entered the retail business.

In 1933 he moved to Maryville, where he was again engaged in retail business until his retirement two years ago.

Ada Grace Hughes was born at Rock Port, Mo., April 25, 1879, the daughter of Mr and Mrs George L. Hughes. Here she spent the earlier years of her life. Later the family moved to a farm near Tarkio.

Mr and Mrs Sauceman were married December 23, 1898. To this union four children were born, Paul H. of Des Moines, Ia, Helen R. Clymens of Maryville, George W. of Denver, Colo, and a daughter, Marjorie Rose who died November 21, 1937, at the age of 12. There are three grandchildren, James A. Mr and Mrs Sauceman were lifelong members of the Methodist church. Until they were prevented by failing health, both were active in Sunday School and Church work, locally and in the county.

Any who has been in the Sauceman home knows the love and devotion they felt for one another. Through all their years Mr Sauceman's first thought was for his home and family.

It was Mrs Sauceman's desire to live and to take care of him until the end: then she was ready to go. It was not until he suffered a slight stroke in December that he became despondent and worried constantly about himself and her future.

Their self-sacrifice and untiring devotion to others will long be remembered by all who knew them.

After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and during his basic training in Ft. Belvoir, Virginia he learned the craft of Lithography. After basic training he was sent to Eta Jima, Japan where he gained his love for snow skiing, sushi and Sapporo beer. He served in the Korean War and at one point produced and delivered strategic maps to General Douglas MacArthur for the Inchon Invasion. Later during his service he was stationed in North Carolina during the Berlin Missile Crisis. Don completed his 40 year military career at the Presidio in San Francisco as a Chief Warrant Officer.

Don married Eileen O'Leary in San Francisco where he lived until 1958, they then moved to their first newly built home in San Bruno. Don and Eileen were married for 52 years.

Don loved California and enjoyed all it had to offer; the snow skiing at Mt. Shasta, skidooing in Mi-Wuk and skin diving along the California Coast. He enjoyed waterskiing at the nearby Lake Berryesa and fishing in the San Francisco Bay. He held onto his childhood love for hunting and beagles. He loved to walk the beautiful mountains surrounding Yosemite and Kennedy meadows. His infamous camouflaged International Travelall 4 wheel drive also retired at the Mountain House.

Don was fortunate enough to retire at 50 from lithography, the trade he learned from the Army. He owned his own Shop "Negatorium" for 10 years in the heart of downtown San Francisco. Following retirement he spent time making "Papa's special beef jerky" for the grandkids, enjoying the cabin and watching hours of baseball, softball and dance shows of his first set of grandkids, Shawna and Scott. He continued his enthusiasm for wood working and home improvement by purchasing and repairing several houses in northern and southern California. He loved playing pool with his sons and enjoyed trips to the park with his youngest granddaughter Ava and the happy contagious smiles of his newest grandson. Don passed away Monday, September 11, 2006 at Mills Peninsula Medical Center, Burlingame, California, at the age of 76 years.
