Barger, William - William Barger, farmer all of his life, died at 9:30 o'clock Friday night at his home three miles west of Ravenwood, following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday fternoon at the Price funeral home, conducted by the Rev Eddie Carrow and burial will be in the Center Grove cemetery, north of Tarkio.

Born Sept 18, 1880 on a farm north of Tarkio, Mr barger had lived on the home farm of his father until seven years ago when he moved to the home where he died. He was married Jan 4, 1927 at Mound City, to Gae Macrander, who survives. Other survivors include three sons, Dan, of the U.S. Army; Isaac and Carroll of the home; two daughters, Lucy and Betheen of the home; three sisters, Mrs Susie Bentley, Westboro, Mo; Mrs Clayton Scott, Tarkio and Miss Pansy Barger, Fulton, Mo.; four nieces and one nephew.

Babcock, Doris Marie Powell - Doris Marie (Powell) Babcock, the daughter of Virgil Lee and Anna Jean (Shanks) Powell was born September 27, 1929 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Doris graduated from Tarkio High School in 1946 and from Tarkio College in 1950.

Doris was united in marriage to Glenn Walter Babcock on June 6, 1950 in Wyoming. She was a homemaker. Glenn passed away in 2000. Doris passed away Sunday, November 15, 2009 at her residence in Tarkio.

Besides her parents, and husband, Glenn, Doris was preceded in death by one brother, Neil Powell. Survivors include two daughters, Candace Hawkins and her husband,G. Michael, Arlington, Texas, and Deborrah Kasparian, Tarkio; three grandchildren, Payton, Anna, Taylor; two great grandchildren, Canaan and Julian; one brother, Jim Powell, and his wife Lois, Tarkio.

Bailey, Mary M. Tallant - Mary M. (Tallant) Bailey, the daughter of Charles Fleming and Polly Edith (Reneer) Tallant was born April 28, 1924 in Phelps City, Missouri. She attended the Phelps City School in her youth.

On April 6, 1940, Mary was united in marriage to William D. Bailey. During World War II, they lived in Seattle, Washington, where Mary worked at a munitions factory, supporting the war effort. Mary was a true homemaker. She raised their family of 8 children; Mary Ann, Betty Jane, William D. Jr., Sue, Donna Faye, Edith, Charlie Ross, and Edward Leroy, and often said all she needed was her children.

They moved several times throughout the years, but Mary always considered "home" to be the Phelps City and Rock Port area. She passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port, at the age of 84 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sons-in-law, Horace Avrett and Lester Maddox, two brothers and four sisters,

Mary is survived by her husband of 68 years, William D. Bailey, Sr., Rock Port; children, Mary Ann Avrett, Fairfax, Missouri, Betty Jane Cook, and husband, Sonny, Rock Port, William D. Bailey, William D. "Bill" - William D. (Bill) Bailey, Sr., the son of William Ross and Elizabeth Ann (Johnson) Bailey, was born March 25, 1921 in Phelps City, Missouri. He attended Phelps City schools.

Bill was united in marriage to Mary Margaret Tallant on April 6, 1940, south of Phelps City and they became the parents of eight children. On September 1, 1943, he entered the United States Marine Corp and proudly served his country overseas during World War II. He drove a truck in the service, hauling munitions, until his honorable discharge on September 27, 1945. Bill was very proud of being a Marine, and his family has many fond memories of him playing the Marine Corp Hymn on his harmonica.

After returning home from the service, Bill farmed in the Phelps City area. He then began his career as an over the road truck driver, retiring in 1985 from Consolidated Freight. During this time, he also worked helping to build the Brownville Bridge, Cooper Nuclear Station, South of Brownville, Nebraska and Interstate 29. Mary passed away March 21, 2009. Bill passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port at the age of 88 years.

Bill was the greatest "Dad" anyone could ask for. He loved to hunt, fish, go dancing with Mary, and play the harmonica. He especially loved his family and talking with the many people he met throughout his life. He never knew a stranger. Bill was a member of the Teamsters Union and the Ralph Greer American Legion Post #49, Rock Port.

Besides his parents, Bill is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Bailey, brother, Eugene Bailey, sons-in-law, Lester Maddox and Horace Avrett.

Survivors include his children, Mary Ann Avrett, Fairfax, Missouri, Betty Jane Cook and her husband, Sonny, Rock Port, William D. Bailey, Jr., and his wife, Ernestene, Sherivon, Arkansas, Sue Jochim and her husband, Albert, Platte City, Missouri, Donna Faye Maddox, Phelps City, Missouri, Edith Peters and Bill Willis, Hamburg, Iowa, Charlie Ross Bailey and his wife, Judy, and Edward Leroy Bailey, all of Panama City Beach, Florida, 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, brother, Raymond Bailey and his wife, Beth, Cisco, Texas, sisters, Arlene Swindle and her husband, Jim, Colorado City, Texas, Phyllis Swindle and her husband, Jack, Abilene, Texas, and sister-in-law, Delores Bailey, Abilene.

Balle, Henry "Hank" - Hank Balle, the son of Henry, Sr. and Mildred (Wilson) Balle, was born
March 18, 1915 in Tarkio, Missouri.

Hank graduated from Tarkio High School, where he was a letterman in football. He then attended Tarkio College. On February 17, 1939, Hank was united in marriage to Margaret Elizabeth Parrish in her home in Craig, Missouri. This union was blessed with a daughter, Mary Kay. They made their home in Tarkio together until Margaret passed away on February 15, 2005.

Hank worked for Pratt-Whitney in Kansas City, Missouri as an aviation mechanic. From February 1945 to March 1946, he served aboard the aircraft carrier, the USS Cowpens, which was the first carrier into Tokyo Bay at the time of the Japanese surrender. He was able to watch the surrender ceremony on the USS Missouri from the deck of the USS Cowpens. After the war, Hank returned to Tarkio, where he operated a gas station and bulk oil plant selling Sinclair products. After selling the station, he worked for the Eaton Corporation in Shenandoah, Iowa from 1973 until his retirement in 1980.

Hank spent his entire life serving and supporting the Tarkio Christian Church, where he served as an elder and on the church board. He served his hometown of Tarkio as a North Alderman, as well as Commander of the Allen-Schiffern American Legion Post #199, where he was a member for over 60 years. Fishing was Hank’s great love, and he also enjoyed flying and skeet shooting.

Besides his parents and his wife, Margaret, Hank was preceded in death by his brother, Wilton Morrell Balle. Survivors include his daughter, Kay Pierce and her husband, Roger, Arlington, Texas; two granddaughters, Dawn Young and her husband, Clint, Austin, Texas and Denise Adams and her husband, David, Arlington; great granddaughter, Lillith (Lilly) Young, of Austin; a cousin, Frances Lee and her husband, Richard, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Baumann, Bonnie Jean Heldt - Bonnie Jean (Heldt) Baumann, the daughter of Floyd Nicholas and Linda Augusta (Runge) Heldt, was born May 23, 1929 in Onawa, Iowa. She was confirmed at the Denison Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Bonnie attended school in Iowa, graduating in 1947 from Denison High School.

On October 15, 1950, Bonnie was united in marriage to Wayne Virgil “Buck” Baumann in Denison. Due to Buck’s employment, the family relocated several times. After living in Rock Port from 1970 to 1977, they moved to Papillion, Nebraska. Following Buck’s passing in 2003, Bonnie returned to Rock Port to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren. Bonnie was a homemaker and enjoyed being there for her family. She passed away Monday, February 2, 2009 at Community Hospital-Fairfax, Missouri at the age of 79 years.

Besides her parents, Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband Buck; one sister, Verla Bachman and one infant brother, Floyd Heldt, Jr.

Bonnie is survived by her daughter, Gerri Nicks and her husband, Jim, Rock Port; son, Ty Baumann, Omaha, Nebraska; grandson, Jason Stephens and his fiancée Tiffany Burk, Atlanta, Georgia; granddaughter, Jennifer Wood and her husband, Kaven, Rock Port; four great grandchildren, Breea, Hayden, Keaton and Ethan; three sisters, Marlene Hubbard and her husband, Bob, Plattsmouth, Nebraska, JoAnn Layhue and her husband, Tom, Cheyenne, Wyoming and Elvira Voge and her husband, Don, Radcliffe, Kentucky; numerous nieces and nephews.

Beal, Zane C. - Zane C. Beal, 87, Wichita, Kansas, died Thursday , October 16, 2008. Services: 10:30 am, Monday, October 20, Downing & Lahey Mortuary East, Wichita. Visitation with the family will be 6:00 to 8:00 pm, Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio, Missouri. Interment at 11:00 am, Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at Home Cemetery, Tarkio.

Zane served in the Air Force, making 31 missions over enemy territory in World War II. He retired from Boeing after 30 years. Zane was born in Quitman, Missouri to Grace and John Beal. Survivors include his wife, Olive, daughter, Zannette Vincent; grandchildren, Michael and his wife Jennifer, David, Frank and his wife Alice, Annette and her husband Robin. Also surviving: sister, Eunice Rader; great grandchildren, KayCee, Michael, Stephen, Brian, Wyatt, Harley, Kaela, Tanis, Haley, Alyssa, Isaiah and Samantha; great-great grandchild Kimberly; many nieces and nephews.


Bell, Marvin Edward - Marvin Edward Bell, the son of James Lloyd and Dorothy Louise (Murry) Bell, was born December 21, 1928 at Langdon, Missouri, and was a life-long resident of the state. When he was six years old the family moved to Stockton, where they lived until moving back to Langdon in 1942. He attended grade school at Independence School, near Stockton, and Excelsior and Benton Center Schools, near Langdon. Marvin then attended Rock Port High School, graduating in 1948. He had a great zest for life and enjoyed the years at Rock Port High, where he was quarterback and co-captain of a winning football team under Coach Richard Hinderliter.

Marvin was united in marriage to Joann Carolyn Tiemeyer, and they became the parents of three sons, Stephen Michael, Patrick Lee and Nicky Bruce.

The couple farmed near Langdon. After the flood of 1952, they moved to a farm east of Rock Port where they lived until moving into Rock Port in 1957. In 1979, they moved to Cameron, then to St. Joseph in 1981. After leaving the farm, Marvin became an over-the-road truck driver, retiring in 1999 because of health problems. He passed away Monday, July 20, 2009 at Carriage Square Health Care Center in St. Joseph at the age of 80 years.

Marvin loved kids, dogs, gooseberry pie, football, baseball, country western music, pickup trucks and 18 wheelers. He had many friends and enjoyed nothing more than helping solve the world’s problems with them at a truck stop over an afternoon cup of coffee.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister, Lois Wade. Survivors include his wife, Joann Bell of the home; three sons, Stephen Bell and his wife, Jill, Rockport, Massachusetts, Patrick Bell, Solebury, Pennsylvania and Nick Bell, San Francisco, California; five grandchildren, Thatcher Bell and his wife, Victoria, New York City, New York, Courtney Bell, West Barnstable, Massachusetts, Tyler Bell, Los Angeles, California, and Jonathan and Matthew Bell, Rockport, Massachusetts; two great grandchildren, Fiona Madeleine and Arlo Miller Bell, New York City; sister, Maxine Randall and her husband, Allan, Odenton, Maryland and brother, Denzil Bell and his wife, Thelma, Falls City, Nebraska; numerous cousins and a host of friends.

Bertram, Steve L. "Bert" - Steve L. (Bert) Bertram, the son of James Byron and Winifred (Burke) Bertram was born, July 10, 1955 at the Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, Missouri. Steve lived in Rock Port, Missouri and graduated from Rock Port High School in 1973. He then attended Missouri Western State College, St. Joseph, Missouri, for 2 years.

While in St. Joseph, Steve worked three years for Skaggs in East Hills Mall, and then returned to Rock Port. He then worked three years for Super Chevrolet in Tarkio, Missouri and later for True Ag in Rock Port.

In 1986, Steve and Sheila Hargus, his best friend and lifelong soul mate of 37 years, moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where Steve was employed with Transportation Specialist Inc. At the time of his passing, he was employed by Transwood Carriers Inc., where he had worked 22 years. Steve passed away October 25, 2009, at Lakeside Hospital in Omaha, at the age of 54 years, 3 months and 15 days. Steve will be greatly missed.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, Earl and Edna Bertram, and Thomas and Lucille Burke. Survivors include, Sheila Hargus of their home in Omaha; brother, Tom Bertram, Maysville, Missouri; aunt, Phyllis Bailey of San Antonio Texas; cousin, Joann Embrey of St. Joseph; Sheila’s sisters, Shirley Rader and her husband John, Fairfax, and Lynnette Strough, St. Joseph; Sheila’s nieces, Jennifer (Rader) Weydert, and her husband Jared, Macon, Missouri, and Danielle (Ramsey) Johnson and her husband Chris, Maryville, Missouri; Sheila’s nephews, Tony Rader and his wife Chris, Mound City, Missouri, Brett Strough and his wife Kylee, St. Joseph; Sheila’s great nieces, Jacey Rader and Kennedy Weydert; Sheila’s great nephew, Derek Weydert; and many, many friends and co workers.

Boettner, Ralph - Ralph Boettner, the son of John F. and Mary Elmira (Marsh) Boettner was born September 18, 1924 in the Lone Cedar community north of Rock Port Missouri. He was raised and worked on the Boettner family farm. Ralph attended Lone Cedar School in his youth and graduated from Rock Port High School in 1943.

On May 17, 1944 Ralph enlisted in the United States Army and served during World War II in Germany. He completed his basic training in field artillery at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Ralph received his honorable discharge on June 12, 1946 and returned to Rock Port. Following the war, he got his pilot’s license and enjoyed flying for over 50 years. He attended fly-ins, flight breakfasts, and enjoyed taking people for rides in his plane.

On January 16, 1955, Ralph was united in marriage to Evelyn JoAnne Owen at the Presbyterian Church in Essex, Iowa. They made their home on their farm north of Rock Port their entire married life, where they raised their children, Rebecca, Rachael and Richard. They celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary in January of this year. Ralph passed away November 13, 2009 at Grape Community Hospital, Hamburg, Iowa at the age of 85 years.

Ralph’s family was the first priority of his life. He enjoyed being outdoors, watching the crops being planted and harvested, feeding the birds and squirrels during the winter months, giving special attention to the farm cats. Ralph was a faithful member of the Rock Port United Methodist Church where he has served on numerous committees, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and was a leader of the United Methodist Youth Fellowship group. He especially enjoyed the many years he served as a church camp counselor for the 5th and 6th grade camps, videotaping the church services, and the 12-15 years that he and Evelyn were members of “Volunteer in Mission” trips. Ralph enjoyed traveling. He and Evelyn traveled across the United States, as well as several trips overseas. He has served as treasurer of the Linden Cemetery Association for 32 years. He formerly served on the Atchison County Coop Board, Atchison County Soil and Water Conservation Board, and was President of the Atchison County Extension Council. Ralph also was a member of the Atchison County Farm Bureau, a 4-H leader, and judged various 4-H events throughout the years.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents and one infant brother, James. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn, of the home; 3 children, Rebecca Hance and husband, Leo, Rock Port, Rachael Inman and husband, Eric, Nebraska City, Nebraska, Richard Boettner and wife, Ernema (Bing), Maryville, Missouri; five grandchildren, Ryan Hance and wife, Melissa, Mission, Kansas, Adam Hance, Raytown, Missouri, Ruth Ann Boettner, Lincoln, Nebraska, Zeke and Wade Inman, Nebraska City; sister, Greta Lyden, Rock Port, and many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Broermann, Harry William - Harry William Broermann, the son of Charles W. and Cora (Vette) Broermann, was born July 30, 1916 on the family farm northwest of Tarkio, Missouri. He attended North Polk Country School and graduated from Rock Port High School in 1935. Harry then graduated from Tarkio College in 1939 with a Bachelor’s Degree in History.

On December 25, 1942, Harry was united in marriage to Neva Alexander at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Westboro. They lived and farmed their entire married life on the family farm. Neva passed away April 8, 1998. Harry passed away Thursday, September 3, 2009 at Northview Manor, Tarkio, at the age of 93 years.

Harry was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, singing in the choir for over 70 years and as a Sunday school teacher for over 60. He was a familiar face in the local libraries, courthouse and places of historical interest. Being a very civic minded individual, Harry contributed a significant amount of his time serving on boards, leading clubs and organizations, and researching history for his community and Atchison County. Capacities in which Harry has served include; Farmers City 4-H Club, past president of the Atchison County Farm Bureau, Atchison County Historical Society, Rock Port Memorial Building Restoration Committee, director and vice chairman of Community Services Inc., director of American Lung Association of Western Missouri, Missouri State Director for C.R.O.P., (Christian Rural Overseas Program), director for the Regional Manpower Advisory Council, Farmer’s Action Program, Atchison County Republican Central Committee, Tri-State Tourism, Tarkio Community Betterment, Tarkio College, Atchison County Chairman of Atchison-Holt OATS Association and a member of Atchison County Child Abuse Council. This past August 16th he was inducted into the Missouri State 4-H Hall of Fame for having served as a member and leader of Farmer’s City 4-H Club for 86 yrs.

Besides his wife, Harry was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include, one daughter, Royce Anne Wallace and husband, Bob, Shenandoah, Iowa; two sons, Gordon Broermann and wife, Peggy, Butte, Montana, Gregg Broermann and wife, Elaine, Shenandoah; eleven grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, three great great-grandchildren; one brother, Don Broermann, Oceanside, California; one sister, Wilma Vette, Westboro; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Brusha, Raymond Marvin - Raymond Marvin Brusha, the son of Jess Tiffany and Anna Frieda (Poppa) Brusha, was born September 21, 1921 in Langdon, Missouri. He attended country schools in the Red Star, Langdon and Nishnabotna, Missouri area.

On July 16, 1942, Marvin enlisted in the United States Army. He proudly served his country in the Philippines and Los Esperitos Islands during World War II. Marvin was a top secret cryptographer. While in the Philippines, he decoded the famous message from General McArthur confidently proclaiming “I have returned”. He received his honorable discharge on December 18, 1945 and returned to Rock Port.

On June 9, 1946, Marvin was united in marriage to Evelyn A.G. Davis in Hiawatha, Kansas. They made their home in Rock Port, where Marvin drove a truck for Raymond Ottmann and a tank wagon for Standard Oil. Marvin later worked as the parts manager for the Ford Motor Company in Rock Port for 17 years, and was then employed with the Missouri Department of Transportation from 1969 until his retirement in October of 1984.

Marvin was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Rock Port. In November of 2008, Marvin was recognized for 50 years of service as a Master Mason and had also served as past Grand Master for the North Star Masonic Lodge # 157 AF & AM. He was also a 50 year member of the Ralph Greer American Legion Post #49, both of Rock Port. Marvin umpired baseball games for years, and was scouted by the Chicago White Sox to become a major league umpire. He turned down the offer because he wanted to stay close to his family. Marvin passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port at the age of 87 years.

Besides his parents and wife, Evelyn, who passed away in 2006, Marvin was preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara Hamersky and three sisters, Anna Ohrt, Frieda Curtis-Green and Roberta Olson. Marvin is survived by one son, Raymond V. Brusha and his wife, Jolena, Boulder, Colorado; two daughters, Carolyn Seek and her husband, Pat, Alamo, Texas and Becky Brusha, Bellevue, Nebraska; three grandsons, Troy Seek, Derrick Fuller and Eric Brusha; three granddaughters, Tammy Brendle, Tiffany Raymer and Katya Brusha; seven great-grandchildren; one step great-grandchild; nieces and nephews.

Butler, William Edward - William Edward Butler, the son of Roy Logan and Ada (Fox) Butler, was born September 19, 1925 in Tarkio, Missouri. He attended school at Tarkio, and then joined the United States Navy, proudly serving his country during World War II.

Ed was united in marriage to Shirley McGuire, who passed away in 1955. He then married Betty Knowles, who passed away in 1998.

Ed was an over the road truck driver, hauling for Jack Cooper Transport Company for 37 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Westminster, Colorado. Ed passed away September 19, 2008 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 83 years.

He is preceded in death by his parents and wives. Ed is survived by his companion, Marilyn Erdman, Rock Port; two sons, William Michael Butler and his wife Kathy, Rock Port, James Hannah and his wife Betsy, Longmont, Colorado; four daughters, Pat Grablin and her husband Mark, Lakewood, Colorado, Micki Rogers and her husband Paul, Arvada, Colorado, Jean Liffick and Robin Martinez and her husband Leroy, both of Wheatridge, Colorado; eighteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren with two more expected in October.
