[105] Baker, Jewell E.Campbell, the daughter of C. A. and Emma Campbell – Hammer was born July 3, 1914 in Allendale, Missouri. At the age of five, she moved with her family to Redding, Iowa, where she attended school and graduated from Redding High School. She then became a student at Northwest Missouri State Teachers College, Maryville, Missouri for two years receiving her teaching certificate in Intermediate Education. She continued her education by attending summer sessions and taking correspondence courses given by the college. Jewell taught grade school in Hatfield, Missouri, Delphos, Iowa, Kellerton, Iowa and Clearfield, Iowa.
On October 27, 1945, Jewell was united in marriage to Frank Baker of Hatfield, Missouri. Soon after, Frank was honorably discharged from the United States Army, and they moved to Bethany, Missouri, then to Newton, Kansas, where they lived for approximately 19 years. Soon after her marriage to Frank, Jewell ended her teaching career, preferring to donate her time to homemaking. In 1973 they moved to Tarkio, where on November 11, 1988, after 43 years of marriage, Frank passed away at the age of 74 years. Jewell remained in Tarkio until the present time. From the time she was a small child, Jewell felt the desire to attend Sunday School and Church, to study God’s word and be a faithful witness to her Savior Jesus Christ. She passed away Sunday, January 6, 2008 at Community Hospital, Fairfax, Missouri at the age of 93 years.
Besides her parents and husband Frank, Jewell was preceded in death by three brothers, Artis, Dale and Arnold, and a baby sister Blondina Rae. Survivors include nieces and nephews.

[106] Bargman, Roberta Maxine Dunkle, the daughter of George Washington and Lesta (Boyer) Dunkle was born December 15, 1916 in rural Arcadia, Nebraska. She attended country school in the Milton community south of Fairfax, Missouri.

Maxine was united in marriage on June 30, 1937, to Robert Uttvits Bargman by Rev. E. E. Basye at the United Methodist Church Parsonage, Westboro, Missouri. They made their home, reared their two children and farmed in the Westboro Community. The family always had a large garden with flowers and vegetables. Maxine was a homemaker for the majority of their married life, but for 17 years, after her children were raised, she was also employed as a nurse's aid at Community Hospital. Maxine passed away Thursday, March 08, 2007 at the Community Hospital, Fairfax, Missouri at the age of 90 years.

Maxine was an accomplished, self taught, piano player who could play just about any song she heard by ear or by reading music. She also enjoyed crocheting.

Survivors include one daughter, Roberta Anderson, Omaha, Nebraska, one son Bill Bargman and his wife Carol, Lee's Summit; grandchildren, Roger Goodman, Westboro, Nanette Williams and husband Jack, Omaha, Scott Bargman and wife Julia, Smithville, Missouri, Tracy Battmer and husband, Kent, Kansas City, Missouri and Tricia Bargman, Lee's Summit, Missouri; six great-grandchildren, Quinn Goodman, Tyler Williams, Zach and Troy Bargman, and Emily and Amanda Battmer; one sister Lucile Winstead, Overland Park, Kansas, and one brother-in-law, Dr. Glenn Bargman and wife Carmean, now living in Arizona.

Besides her parents and husband Robert, she was preceded in death by one grandson Mark Bargman and eleven brothers and sisters.

[107] Bermingham, James John, the son of David “Bud” and Marion Rose (Deacon) Bermingham, was born on September 27, 1933 in Buffalo, New York. Jim graduated from McKinley High School in Buffalo in 1951.

On July 27, 1953 Jim entered the United States Army and proudly served his country in a tank battalion during the Korean War. After receiving his honorable discharge on June 7, 1955, Jim returned to New York and attended Hutch Technical School, studying heating and cooling.
In 1954, Jim was united in marriage to Betty Konopik. To this union three daughters were born, Debbie, Sheri, and Jo. They were later divorced. On February 27, 1983, Jim was united in marriage to Joyce E. Squires. They made their home in Rock Port, where Jim was employed by Fairfax Heating and Cooling. He was later employed by Comfort Crew in Rock Port, where he retired in 1995. Jim also built the KOA Camp Ground west of Rock Port, which he owned and operated for several years.

Jim enjoyed going to Langdon Bend Missouri River Access or the Nishnabotna River Access to fish. He also enjoyed his dog Tuffy, going to the casino, and especially spending time with Joyce. Jim passed away Monday, November 5, 2007 at Community Hospital, Fairfax, Missouri at the age of 74 years.

Besides his parents, Jim is preceded in death by a daughter Debbie Butler who passed away on October 12, 2003. Survivors include his wife Joyce of the home; daughters Sheri Vanderhoof and her husband Jim, Booneville, Missouri, Jo Sempeck and her husband Scott, Denver, Colorado; stepchildren, Penny Heathcock, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Carolyn Hutt and her husband Robert, Sidney, Iowa, Deby Erickson and her husband Donald, Maryville, Missouri, J.R. Squires and his wife Mary, Exeter, Missouri, Tom Squires and his wife Lisa, Kearney, Missouri, David Squires and his wife Carla, Gardner, Kansas; fourteen grandchildren, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Kara, Matt, Jackie, Bobbi, April, Lukas, Alannah, Casey, Jacob, Austin, Grant, and David; four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Maggie, Bradley and Malachi; sister Pat Frizell and her husband Harold, North Tonwanda, New York.

[108] Bolton, Keith, was born December 12, 1922 to Guy Olin and Frances Fae (Proud) Bolton in Fairfax, Missouri. He passed away March 19, 2008 in Harlingen, Texas at the age of 85 years.

He attended Long Branch Country School and graduated from Fairfax High School in 1943.

He entered the Army Air Corp that June, during World War II and was discharged after being injured in training at Shepherd Air Base, Wichita Falls, Texas. He returned home and started his life long love – farming.

Keith and Carla J. Purchase were married on January 27, 1946. They have spent their 62 years of marriage on the same farm at Tarkio, Missouri. For the last 20 years, they have enjoyed traveling and being “Winter Texan’s” in Harlingen.

Keith was a member of the Tarkio United Methodist Church and attended the First United Methodist Church in Harlingen.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his daughter Carol Ann; sister Louise Cline; and brothers, J. Dean Bolton and E.C. Bolton.

[109] Branson, Barbara Yvonne Sparks, the daughter of Harrison and Pauline Lauretta (Perry) Sparks, was born April 14, 1942 in Burlington Jct., Missouri. She attended Westboro High School, Westboro, Missouri.

On September 4, 1979 she was united in marriage to Richard Branson. Barbara worked as a Certified Nurses Aid at Northview Manor, Tarkio from 1985 to 1992. Richard passed away August 7, 1995. Barbara passed away Saturday, March 10, 2007 at Community Hospital, Fairfax, Missouri at the age of 64 years.

Survivors include three daughters, Lauretta Obert, Lamar, Missouri, Tammy Peters, Tarkio, Tonda Sparks, Lincoln, Nebraska; three sons, Albert Sparks, Lincoln, Tony Sparks, Grand Jct., Iowa, George Branson, Tarkio; mother, Pauline Bartlett, Greenfield, Missouri; six step-daughters; one step-son; 15 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; five brothers, three sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Beside her father and husband Richard, Barbara was preceded in death by one great-grandson, Christopher Obert.

[110] Brindle, Eithel Grace Baker, the daughter of Marie Baker was born on April 4, 1922 in Rock Port, Missouri. She went to be with the LORD, at the home of her daughter, Susan Marie Kerr in Leavenworth, Kansas, Sunday morning, June 18th at the age of 84 years.

On July 3, 1940, Eithel was united in marriage to Lewis Ross Brindle. They were long time residents of Rock Port. Eithel was a wife of 65 years, a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a great reader and was passionate about genealogy. Her favorite question was "have you written that down somewhere?" Eithel represented Rock Port as "Miss Rock Port" at the dedication of the Brownville Bridge. She was involved with the American Legion Women's Auxiliary, and was a member of the First Christian Church, Rock Port.

Survivors include one son, Steve Brindle, Rock Port, daughter, Susan Kerr and her husband, Bob, Lansing; two granddaughters, Lorelei Winzenburg and husband, William, and Elizabeth Kerr; great-grandson, William John Winzenburg III, all of Lansing.

Eithel was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis, November, 2005.

Funeral services were Thursday, June 22, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port, Missouri, and were conducted by Pastor Gene Stowell, (LTC. Tet.) Leavenworth, Kansas.
Interment at Greenhill Cemetery, Rock Port, Missouri.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Kendallwood Hospice, Kansas City, Missouri.

[111] Brought, "Turk" Irvin R., the son of George Henry and Maggie May (Asbury) Brought was born October 18, 1921 in Rock Port, Missouri. Turk attended the Mount Pleasant Country School.

On October 2, 1942 Turk enlisted in the United States Army and served his country during World War II.

On December 14, 1943, Turk was united in marriage to Dorothy Irene Olson. They made their home in Rock Port where Turk was employed as a mechanic and heavy equipment operator. Turk was later employed by the City of Rock Port retiring in 1983. Turk was a loving caregiver for many years to his wife, Dorothy, before her death in 2005. They were often seen together riding around town and in the country enjoying the scenery. Turk passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2007, at Northview Manor Nursing Home, Tarkio, Missouri, following a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 85 years.

Turk was a member of First Lutheran Church, Rock Port, and a 57-year member of Ralph Greer American Legion Post #49, Rock Port.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Linda Brought, Greenville, South Carolina; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Elmer Davis, Rock Port, five grandchildren; Sheri McGrew, Albion, Washington, Amy Tryban, Leawood, Kansas, Tracey Garst, Watson, Missouri, Jeremy Davis and Andrea Proctor, both of Rock Port, 12 great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Rosie Olson, and brother-in-law, Leo Olson, both of Rock Port, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Turk was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy, four sisters, and two brothers.

Graveside Services and Burial were held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, January 20, 2007, Greenhill Cemetery, Rock Port. Memorials may be directed to the Rock Port First Responders or Rock Port Nutrition Center.
Military rites were under the auspices of Ralph Greer American Legion Post #49, Rock Port.

 

[112] Brown, Rozella Albertina Jochim was born in Cass County, Louisville, Nebraska on January 7, 1913, the daughter of Henry August and Lillie May (Stratman) Jochim. In her early years, she attended the Bellview Rural School near Tecumseh, Nebraska and graduated in 1931 from Rock Port High School, Rock Port, Missouri.

On March 26, 1932, Rozella was united in marriage to Everette Edward Brown at the High Creek Parsonage in Atchison County, Missouri. Rozella and Everette farmed and raised their family in the Northwest Missouri area. She worked at the J & R Cleaners in Mound City, Missouri for several years doing alterations and then did sewing and alterations from her home. She remained very busy in her spare time as she enjoyed knitting, (had knitted ninety some afghans for her family), and was well known for her beautiful embroidery work. She also enjoyed baking (especially angel food cakes for birthdays), gardening and canning. Husband, Everette passed away August 9, 1966.

Rozella passed away February 16, 2007 at the Tiffany Heights Care Center in Mound City, at the age of 94 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Besides her husband and parents, Rozella was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Anna Belle Brown; two brothers LeRoy Henry Jochim and Albert Sheldon Jochim and three sisters, Hilda Jochim Badertscher, Leora Jochim Michel and Dorothy Jochim.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Robert (Bob) and Shirley Brown, Rosendale, Missouri; two daughters, JoAnn P. Bass and son-in-law, Edward, Tarkio, Missouri and N. Jane Brown, Grand Island, Nebraska; grandchildren: R. Scott Brown and R. Craig Brown both of Rosendale, Cynthia Powell Lindsay, Brookville, Kansas and Deborah Powell Fabrizio, Pueblo, Colorado; great-grandchildren, Stephanie Lindsay, Morgan Lindsay, Jordan Jo Fabrizio and Rylea Rae Fabrizio; sister Velma Jean J. McKnight, Savannah, Missouri; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held at 11:00 am Tuesday, Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port. Burial is at Linden Cemetery Rock Port. Memorials may be directed to the Rozella Brown Memorial Fund.

 

[113] Brusha, Evelyn A. G. Davis, the daughter of Theodore and Leona (Smith) Davis, was born July 14, 1926 in Langdon, Missouri. She passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2006 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port at the age of 80 years. Evelyn attended Lincoln Country School, the Nishnabotna High School and graduated from Rock Port High School.

On June 9, 1946, she was united in marriage to Marvin Brusha in Hiawatha, Kansas. They made their home in Rock Port where Evelyn was a homemaker, wife and mother. For 20 years Evelyn was employed by Dr. Henderson as a dental receptionist. She also was employed by Ned Greenley and Kurt Clifton.

She was a member of the Rock Port Chapter #440, Order of Eastern Star and First Lutheran Church, Rock Port where Evelyn enjoyed singing in the church choir and teaching Sunday school.

Evelyn is survived by her husband, Marvin, of the home, Rock Port, three daughters; Carolyn Seek and husband, Patrick, Omaha, Nebraska, Barbara Hamersky and husband, John, Papillion, Nebraska, and Becky Brusha, currently in active service with the United States Military in Iraq, one son; Raymond Brusha and wife, Jolena, Boulder, Colorado, six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, one step great grandchild, six sisters; Esther Perry and husband, Ralph, Rock Port, Lois Douglass, Columbia, Missouri, Eva Tupa, and husband, Loren, Lincoln, Nebraska, Anna Clark and husband, Bill, Belton, Missouri, Donal Davis and wife, Jan, Grand Island, Nebraska, Sonna Lane and husband, Warren, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Helen McPherson, and husband, Charlie, of Rock, Kansas, one brother; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister and brother-in-law; Dorthy and George Schomburg, and brother-in-law, Don Douglass.

Services and burial were held on Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at First Lutheran Church in Rock Port at 10:00 a.m.; burial immediately followed at Greenhill Cemetery. There was no scheduled family visitation. Memorials may be directed to the Rock Port Nutrition Center or First Lutheran Church, also of Rock Port.

 

[114] Bungenstock, Billie Joan Voltmer was born near Rock Port, Missouri on September 21, 1932 the daughter of Roy Henry and Wilma Hope Greer Voltmer. She passed away at her home in Fairfax, Missouri on Sunday, September 10, 2006 at the age of 73 years, 11 months and 20 days.

She graduated from Tarkio High School in Tarkio, Missouri in 1950 and worked for the Atchison County Library for a few years. Later she attended a community college in California.

On November 2, 1952, Joan was united in marriage to Kenneth LaVon Bungenstock at the Baptist Church in Tarkio. They became the parents of three children, Larry, Debbie and Randy. They resided in Rock Port, St. Joseph, Missouri and Kansas City, Missouri before moving to California in 1963. They returned to Atchison County in 1990 to live in Fairfax. LaVon passed away January 20, 1994 and Joan continued to reside in her home to the present.

Joan was baptized in 1945 and became a member of the Tarkio Baptist Church where she has remained a member. She was a wonderful homemaker and mother who enjoyed camping and especially enjoyed working on genealogy. Joan was also a member of the Red Hat Society.

Joan is survived by daughter, Debbie Hitt of Tarkio; son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Kim Bungenstock, Fairfax; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters; Rosalie Woodring and Rita Vance, both of Tarkio, Arnelle Lansdown, Rock Port and Joyce Brown, Midwest City, Oklahoma; daughter-in-law, Chris Tunnell, Oregon, Missouri; sister-in-law, Sondra Leal, Houston, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Joan was preceded in death by husband, Kenneth LaVon Bungenstock, January 20, 1994, son, Larry Bungenstock, November 22, 2002, granddaughter, Belinda Bungenstock, 1979, brother, Duane Voltmer, 2000; grandparents, Carl and Electa Voltmer, Tony and Edith Greer, and step-father, Arnold Garst.

A memorial service was held at 2:00 pm, on Wednesday, September 13, 2006, at Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio, with a private family inurnment at a later date. Memorials may be directed to C.A.R.E. of Atchison County. No visitation is scheduled.

 

[115] Burke, James Robert, the son of Silas Mercer and Iva May (Deatz) Burke was born November 12, 1923 in Rock Port, Missouri. He attended the Rock Port Schools graduating with the class of 1943.

On May 15, 1943, Jim was united in marriage to Gloria May Renshaw, at the Lutheran Church, Rock Port, by Rev. McConnell. They lived in Rock Port and farmed with his parents.

In 1949 they moved to the Burke family home place, where they began farming for themselves and lived for over 50 years. Jim also custom trucked and shelled corn, and ran the Standard Oil tank wagon for one and a half years. From 1957 to 1959, Jim was employed by Rolf Fertilizer. In 1967, he began driving the tank wagon for Rock Port Oil Co., and continued to do so until 1994. Following 1994, he began his own service business; working on furnaces, stoves, propane appliances, washers and dryers, refrigeration units, and air conditioners. Jim was a hard worker and always stayed busy, only retiring after his health required him too. Gloria passed away December 30, 2004.

Jim was a member and former Deacon of the Rock Port Baptist Church and a member of the Greenhill Cemetery Board, where he had served as Secretary and Treasurer.

Jim was an exceptional dad and grandpa, who loved "doing" for his family and community. He did not enjoy fishing but would take the grandkids to watch and sometimes take a nap. He always found little things for them to do, so they could feel like they were helping, while he was working. He never said no to his customers, even when they called on Christmas morning for help with a furnace. He would say, "There is just no one to do this kind of work, and they have little kids". He also enjoyed older cars, and had hoped that one day he would own a Model-T. Jim passed away Monday, August 6, 2007 at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port, at the age of 83 years.

Besides his parents and his wife, Gloria, Jim was preceded in death by one grandson, Chad Casey, and two brothers, Willis and Kenneth Burke. Survivors include one daughter, Jennifer Casey and her husband Pat, Parachute, Colorado, one son, Dan Burke and his wife D.J., Rock Port; seven grandchildren, Christy Masonbrink and her husband Roger, Jason Burke, Matthew Burke, Travis Casey and his wife Diana, Kavin Burke, Ryleah Burke and Kaci Burke; eight great-grandchildren, Jordan, Jase and Jacob Masonbrink, Ryan and Madison Burke, and Alex, Kolton and Aubrey Casey; numerous nieces and nephews and his dog Willow.

[116] Bailey, Rebecca Lynn "Becky" was born June 17, 1944 in Maryville, Missouri the daughter of Everett Abraham "Red" and Nellie Irene (Law) Hargus. She passed away on Wednesday night, February 7, 2007 at her residence.

She graduated from Tarkio High School. On June 4, 1967 She was married to Jerry Allen Bailey in Tarkio, Missouri. She and Jerry spent many years raising and riding horses. Becky was a dedicated homemaker and a gifted baker. She and Jerry moved to Shenandoah in the 1990's. At this time she was employed for Wal-Mart and worked there until ill health forced her retirement.

Becky was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jerry in 2002; and a sister, Carolyn Bredensteiner.

Survivors include her nieces and nephews Eddie Bredensteiner and his wife, Mary Beth of Westboro, Missouri, Dallas Prather and her husband, Jayson, Shane Bredensteiner and his wife, Kymm, Blu Dow and her husband, Tommy, all of Tarkio, Missouri; special friends Ron and Cindy Nelson and children R'Donya and Torrey, brother-in-law Stanley Bredensteiner along with many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 11, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. There will be burial in the Tarkio Home Cemetery at a later date. There will be open viewing after 1 p.m. on Saturday at Selby-Kirsch Funeral Chapel in Shenandoah. A memorial fund is being established.

Bailey, John G. -

John G. Bailey died on Tuesday, February 11th. Mr. Bailey said to have been the first white child born in Atchison county, Missouri. He had spent a greater portion of his life in Atchuson county. Missouri, and in Locust Grove township, Iowa. A few years previous to his death he came to Hamburg [Iowa] to make his home with his son. W. W. Bailey, and while living here he made many friends. He was 84 years. 3 months and 13 days old at the time of his death. Funeral services were conducted at the Johnson Funeral Home on Thursday afternoon, the Rev. D. N. Glllett officiating. Interment was made In the Waldron cemetery, near Northboro. [Dec 23, 1985]

 

Ball, Jacqueline L. (Perkins), 79, formerly of Maryville, Mo., passed away at a Rock Port care center on Feb. 19, 2005.

She was born in Kansas City, Mo., and graduated from Fairfax, Mo., High School. She married Bill Kotsores, and they later divorced. She then married Warren Ball, of Fairfax, and they later divorced.

Jacqueline owned and operated Salon One in Maryville for many years, and later worked as a beautician in Rock Port.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dale and Marie (Flanagan) Perkins.

Survivors include her daughters, Nancy Sam; Harmon, and Deborah Johnson, both of Rock Port; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial service: 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, at the Fairfax Baptist Church. The family will greet friends at the church following the service. Private family inurnment at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax, Mo. Memorials may be directed to the Humane Society. Arrangements by Chamberlain Funeral Home, Rock Port.

 

Balle, Margaret E. (Parrish), 91, Tarkio, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, at Northview Manor, Tarkio [Missouri].

Survivors are husband, Henry Balle Jr.; daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Roger Pierce; and granddaughters, Dawn and Denise.

She was preceded by parents, Henry E. and Ida Elizabeth (Kyler) Parrish; and sister, Mary Parrish.

Graveside service: Saturday, Feb. 19, at 2 p.m., Home Cemetery, Tarkio [Missouri]. There is no visitation. Arrangements: Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio. Memorials: Tarkio Christian Church or Tarkio After School Homework Club.

 

 

 

Banks, Edith Irene Dalbey - Edith Irene Banks, age 90, died Dec. 12, 1985 in the morning at Bethesda Care Center [Clarinda, Ia].

She had been a resident there since 1978. Her home was rural Northboro.
She was born March 18, 1895, daughter of George W. Dalbe and Samantha Jones.
She is the widow of William Banks.
Survivors include a daughter; Mrs. Glenn (Cleo) Harms of Clarinda; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home at 10:30 am Saturday morning.
Burial will be in Walden Grove Cemetery near Westboro, Mo. [Dec 12, 1985]

Barnhart, Hazel L. Richardson -

Hazel L. Barnhart, 78, died Apr. 3, at Rock Port. She was formerly of Hamburg.
    Survivors include two brothers, Boyd Richardson, Hamburg, and Max Richardson of Clarinda; five sisters, Mrs. Neva Matthews, Hamburg, Mrs. Clara Welch, Clackamus, Ore., Mrs. Velma Smith and Mrs. Doris Ryan both of Hamburg and, Mrs. Maxine Douglas of Los Angeles, Calif., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Apr. 6 at the United Methodist Church in Rock Port, conducted by Dr. Mark Turnbough. Interment was in Linden Cemetery. [Apr 12, 1990]

 

Barnhart, Willis Lee "Kearney" -

Willis Lee "Kearney" Barnhart, 84, of Watson, died Feb. 2 at Grape Community Hospital [Hamburg, Ia].
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; one son, Byron of Rock Port; one daughter, Joy Barnhart, Watson; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, John R. Barnhart Moriarty N. M; two sisters Ruth Barnhart and Doris Bemberger of Lamita, CA.
Funeral services were held Feb. 6 at the Minter Funeral Chapel in Rock Port with the Rev. Carroll .fficiating. Interment was High Creek Cemetery. [Feb 15, 2001]

 

Barnhart, Willis Lee "Kearney" -

Willis Lee "Kearney" Barnhart, son of John David and Mary Elizabeth (Inbody) Barnhart was bom Apr. 3, 11916, in rural Rock Port, MO. He attended the Golden View Country School and graduated from Watson High School. He attended business school in St. Joseph, MO.
On Sept. 21, 1940, he was united in marriage to Marjorie Jean Martin, in Maryville, MO. They moved to Omaha and worked for the Martin Bomber plant during WW II.
Kearney was a member of the Sonora Masonic Lodge #200 and the High Creek Cemetery Board. He died Feb. 2, 2001 at Grape Community Hospital [Hamburg, Ia] at the age of 84 years.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; one son, Byron of Rock Port; one daughter, Joy Barnhart, Watson; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, John Jr. Barnhart, Moriarty, NM; two sisters, Ruth Barnhart and Doris Bemberger of Lamita, CA, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers, Floyd, Orville "Beck", Carl "Cap", Donald, and George "Sonny."
Funeral services were held Feb. 6 at the Minter Funeral Chapel in Rock Port with the Rev. Carroll Fischer officiating. Interment was in the High Creek Cemetery. [Feb 15, 2001]

 

Bartholomew, Wiley O., a long time citizen of the High Creek neighborhood, passed away at a hospital in St. Joseph, Saturday at the ape of 49 years, 9 months and 21 days. He was survived by his wife, two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services were held at High Creek, Monday, conducted by Rev. D. W. Griffith, and burial was made in the High Creek cemetery. Bemberger, Clifton H. (Sonny) -

Clifton (Sonny) Bemberger of Watson, died Oct. 29, at the Fairfax Hospital, at the age of 77.
Surviviors include six sons, Clifton and Clifford, both of Fulton, Mo.; Kenneth of Rock Port; Benny of Auburn; Brad of Carlos, Minn.; and Tom of Nebraska City; two brothers, Joe of Lomita, Calif., and Keith of Jefferson City, Mo.; and one sister, Edith Garst of Watson; twelve grandchildren; five great­grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Nov. 1 at the Minter Funeral Chapel in Rock Port, conducted by Rev. Carroll Fischer. Interment was in High Creek Cemetery. [Nov 5, 1992]

 

Bemberger, Clifton H. (Sonny) - Clifton H. (Sonny) Bemberger, was born September 14, 1915 in Watson, Mo., the son of Joseph and Amy (Hayes) Bemberger. He died Oct. 29, 1992 at the Community

Hospital in Fairfax at the age of 77 years, 1 month and 15 days.
All his life was spent in the Watson area where he attended the Bethany and Bellview country schools and Watson High School. Earlier he had helped his father farm and in later years farmed for himself.
On May 19, 1934, he married Aileen Garst and to this union six sons were born; Clifton and Clifford, both of Fulton, Mo.; Kenneth of Rock Port; Benny of Auburn, Nebr.; Brad of Carlos, Minn.; and Tom of Nebraska City. Other survivors include two brothers; Joe Bemberger of Lomita, Calif.; Keith Bemberger of Jefferson City, Mo. and one sister, Edith Garst of Watson; twelve grandchildren; five great­grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Amy; one sister, Mildred McDonald and one grandson, Kevin Bemberger.
Funeral services were held Nov. 1, at the Minter Funeral Chapel in Rock Port with Rev. Carroll Fischer officiating. Interment was in High Creek Cemetery, Watson. [Nov 12, 1992]

 

Bemberger, Joe -

Joe Bemberger, son of Frank and I Nancy Bemberger. was born May 10. 1890, and departed this life March 17, 1941, at the age of 50 years, 10 months and 17 days.
He was united in marriage to Amy I Hayes on October 3, 1910. To this union were born six children, one dying in infancy. Those that survive are: Mrs. Mildred McDonald, Mrs. Edith Garst. Clifton, Joe and Keith Bemberger. He is also survived by his wife, three brothers and three sisters, namely John and Charley Bemberger of Watson, Lewis of Oregon, Mo., Mrs. Maud Bailey of Portland, Ore., Mrs. Mary Harmon of Watson and Mrs. Laura Bond of Syracuse, Nebr. One sister, Sylvia, preceded him in death many years ago. There were four grandchildren, one whom he raised.
Funeral services were held at the Cumberland Presbyterian church at Watson, amid a beautiful floral array, with Rev. P. P. Meador presiding, assisted by Rev. Vincent Lambert of the Baptist church.
Mr. Bemberger was an outstanding farmer and was held in high esteem by those who knew him. His many friends testified by their presence of his kindness shown to his fellow men. He was known as one that was ready to help those in need.
While not a member of any certain church, he was interested in supporting churches.  He expressed his readiness to meet his Maker. His remains were laid to rest in the beautiful High Creek cemetery. [Apr 3, 1941]

 

Bertram, James Byron, 55, Rock Port mortician, died April 5 [1972] at Research Hospital in Kansas City. Services were April 7 at the United Methodist Church in Rock Port, Dr Clarence Morrill officiating, and burial was in Green Hill Cemetery, Rock Port.

Born at Mound City April 9, 1916 to Earl and Edna (Chiswell) Bertram, he moved at about age 9 to Rock Port, where he attended public school.

Later he attended the Williams Institute of Mortuary Science at Kansas City, Kan., and was in the Bertram Funeral Home business in Rock Port thirty years. He did carpentry work until a year ago when health did not permit.

He served in the Coast Guard in World War II and was a member of the American Legion. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and a member of the Rock Port volunteer fire department for over 25 years.

Survivors are his wife, the former Winifred Burke, whom he married July 8, 1939 at Rock Port; two sons, Thomas Earl Bertram, Gallatin, Mo., and Stephen Bertram, of the home; his mother, Mrs Edna Bertram, Rock Port, and his sister, Mrs Helen Embrey, St Joseph, and a niece, Joan Embrey, St Joseph. He was preceded in death by his father.

 

Buckles, Freeman David - Freeman David Buckles joined the Lord in Heaven on Feb. 19, 2005.

Freeman was born on Feb. 18, 1924, to Seth Thomas and Gladys Lorena (Dozier) Buckles. He married Dorothy Lee Henry on Feb. 2, 1946. They celebrated 59 years of marriage. Freeman served in the United States Army during WWII in the Philippines. He owned and operated Buckles Towing in Mound City for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Lena Buckles, plus his beloved dog Babe.

Freeman is survived by his wife Dorothy, of their Mound City home; four children, Carolyn and husband Glenn Caton, Mound City, David and wife Sandy, Savannah, Mo., Leo and wife Karla, and Patricia Buckles, Mound City; five grandchildren, Brian Caton, Cindy Klaas, Tina Kellogg, Christopher and Kirstan Buckles; five great-grandchildren, Maggie Jo, Gracie and Eli Grant Caton, Harlie and Breanna Kellogg; sister, Lois Burge, Mound City, and nieces, nephews and many friends. Freeman was a member of the Nazarene Church and the Paul P. Shutts American Legion Post No. 121, both of Mound City. He had served as Mound City Fire Chief for three years and on the Mound City City Council for six years.

Family visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday evening, with services at 10:00 AM Wednesday, both at Chamberlain Funeral Home, Mound City. Interment with full military rites at Mount Hope Cemetery, Mound City. Memorials may be directed to Asera Care Hospice.

 

Burke, David R., was born August 10, 1967 in Fairfax, Mo. He passed away following a lengthy illness on August 13,1993 at the Clarkson Memorial Hospital in Omaha, Neb., at the age of 26 years.


All his life he has lived in Rock Port, Mo. where he attended the Rock Port Elementary School and graduated from Rock Port High School in 1985. Being an honor student, David graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo., with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1990 and a Bachelor of Science Education Degree in 1991. Preceding his death, he was studying for his Master's Degree in Secondary Education.

David loved sports and during his high school career he participated in varsity football, wrestling and track for four years, serving as Tri-Captain of the 1984 Rock Port Blue Jays State Championship Football Team, Tri-Captain of the Blue Jay Wrestling Team in 1985, had participated at the Missouri State Track Meet his senior year and was a three year member of the Rock Port "R" Club. During his college years he was a consistent member of the Dean's List and a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society. His many honors included the NWMSU Regents Scholarship, the Tarkio College Show-Me-Bowl Scholarship for the Most Valuable Offensive Player Award, the United States Army Reserve National Scholar/Athlete Award and the Rock Port R-II Trust Scholarship.

He was a conscientious young man who always worked hard at any endeavor. In his early working years he was employed with the Rock Port Market, the Hy-Vee Food Store in Clarinda, Iowa and Hardee's in Maryville. He had worked as manager for the Rock Port Pool Board in 1990 and was a familiar and faithful working companion of Richard Amthor with the bin repair service in Rock Port. He enjoyed his substitute teaching with students from kindergarten to seniors in high school in the Rock Port R-II School, the Tarkio R-I School and the Fairfax R-III School and was looking forward to teaching and coaching.
He had a deep, abiding faith and enjoyed his work with the youth. He was a faithful member of the First Christian Church of Rock Port where he had been a Deacon for many years, had lead the Christian Church Youth Fellowship for two years and enjoyed working at the Flaming Spirit Christian Camp near Oregon.Mo. Although most of David's organizational activities took much of his time, his commitment and love for his family were always foremost in his life. David's free time was spent reading, bicycling, walking, running, fishing, hunting or any activity that would bring him close to nature. His winning smile and kind and loving attitude will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his parents Marlin and Sherry Gayler of Rock Port; father and stepmother Richard and Jan Burke of Rock Port; one sister Cindi Gayler of the home in Rock Port; one brother Jared Gayler of Maryville, Mo.; one half-brother Aron Burke, Kansas City, Mo.; one half-sister Jamie Burke of Rock Port; matlernal grandparents Bill andMarjorie Alloway; paternal grandfather George Burke and maternal great-grandmother Maye Alloway all of Rock Port
Preceding him in death were his paternal grandmother Anna Burke; maternal great-grandparents: George and Lona Carder and Everett Alloway; paternal great-grandparents: Hal and Mabel Burke and Charles and Stella Brooks. Services were held Monday, August 16, 1993, at the First Christian Church in Rock Port, Mo. and conducted conducted by Rev. Dan Price. Interment was in the Elmwood Cemetery, Rock Port, Mo. Arrangements were under the direction of Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port, Mo.

Burns, Mary E. (Close), 93, Tarkio, passed away Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port, Mo.

Mary graduated from Fairfax High School, Fairfax, Mo. On Feb. 14, 1937, she was united in marriage to Floyd Close in St. Joseph. They became the parents of two children, Judy and Jane.

In 1945, they moved to St. Joseph where she worked as a clerk at Melmed Pharmacy from 1952 to 1977.Floyd died in 1966.

Following retirement, Mary lived in California with her brother. In 1981 she returned to Tarkio, and in 1983 at a 50-year class reunion, she became reacquainted with Albert Burns. They were married on Oct. 12, 1983, and made their home in Tarkio. Albert passed away in 1995.

Mary was a member of the Tarkio United Methodist Church, and the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include; two daughters, Clara Jane Close, Tarkio, and Judy LeBlanc and husband Ron, Donaldsonville, La.; two stepsons, Ron Burns and his wife Marilynn, West Des Moines, Iowa, Gary Burns and his wife, Gail, Fairfax; seven grandchildren, Michele Burns and Theresa Franken, Jerry Pickett, Cindy Mitchell, Royce Burns, Ronda Burns, Dianne Burns; two great-grandchildren, Emily Franken and Katie Franken; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her husbands and parents, Ora Prentiss and Clara Belle (Dragoo) Mapes, Mary was preceded in death by three brothers, Russell, Cline, and Paul Mapes; two sisters, Mabel McCoy and Alice Busch.

Memorial service:11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 21, 2005, United Methodist Church, Tarkio. Visitation:10 to 11 a.m., Monday, at the United Methodist Church prior to the service. A private family inurnment will be at a later date. Memorials: The Mary Burns Memorial Fund or the United Methodist Church, Tarkio.

 

Bell, William Michael Shanahan - Memorial services were held at Acheson & Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary in Riverside, CA, for William Michael Shanahan Bell, 50, of Riverside, CA. Mr. Bell died unexpectedly of a massive heart attack on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at his home in Riverside. Born in Munich, Germany, on February 27, 1960, Mr. Bell lived in Riverside for 35 years. He was CEO of Redcloak Enterprises, Inc., in Riverside.
Mr. Bell graduated from Poly High School in 1978 and then earned a bachelor’s degree from New Mexico Military Institute in 1980. He then served his country in the U. S. Army as a Company Commander in the 26th Infantry Division in Germany.
Mr. Bell was a Knight Templar, a member of the Supreme Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem, Grand Preceptory of North America. He donated much of his time to charity and was active in animal rescue.
He enjoyed and played many sports including tennis, basketball, swimming, football and golf.
Mr. Bell is survived by his parents, Colonel (Ret.) William H. and Suzanne S. Bell of Riverside; sisters, Suzanne (Javier) Bell de Garcia of Long Beach, CA, and Kathleen (Richard) Bell-Conine of Zebulon, NC; godson and nephew, Alexander Garcia Bell of Long Beach; uncles, Francis (Charlotte) Shanahan of Ft. Pierce, FL, and Daniel
(Virginia) Shanahan of Carlsbad, CA; several cousins; and his beloved cocker spaniel companion, Precious.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society.

Graveside Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at Home Cemetery, Tarkio, Missouri.

Bays, Anna Lee Sparks

Graveside services were held at Willow Grove Cemetery under the direction of Adam Funeral Home for Anna Lee (Sparks) Bays of Gillette, Wyoming. Anna Lee Bays, age 83, passed away Tuesday, June 14, 1994, at Pioneer Manner Rest Home in Gillette after being in poor health for over seven years at the rest home. Anna Lee was born February 27, 1911, in Tarkio where she was then raised. 
Survivors include: two daughters, Leona Webb of Gillette and Margret Hurst of Lafayette, Louisiana; three grandsons, Jerry Webb, Neal Webb and Wayne Hurst; one great-grand­daughter; one great-grandson; one sister, Hazel Toombs, Ontario, California; and several nieces. Bays, Blanche Ella Dolph - Blanche Ella Bays, 82, Mound City, died Saturday, April 10, 1993, at Tiffany Heights, Mound City. 
She was born Sept. 11, 1910, in Cleveland, Mo., to Vernon Allen and Alma Elizabeth Duncan Dolph. She had lived in the Skidmore area and was a 1929 graduate of Burlington Junction high school.
Mrs. Bays was a homemaker and member of the United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Artie, in 1977, and a brother, Bert Dolph. Survivors include a daughter, Lois Bays Buckles, St. Joseph; a brother, Harry Dolph, Marysville, Wash.; and a sister, Irene Wilson, Cedar Edge, Colo.
