Anderson, Hallie Margaret Graves

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church Ridgway, Pennsylvania, for Hallie Margaret Anderson, Warrenton, Virginia, formerly of Ridgway. Burial followed at Parklawn Memorial Gardens under the direction of Thompson Funeral.
Hallie Margaret Anderson, 93, passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2005, at the home of her daughter, Rhea, in Warrenton. She was born September 13, 1911, in rural Fairfax, daughter of the late William Henry and Ella Eden (Plumb) Graves, who preceded her in death.
After graduating from Irish Grove High School in Fairfax, she attended Maryville State Teachers College and taught at the rural and elementary levels in Missouri and Porum, Oklahoma, for 10 years.
Hallie retired as credit manager after 17 years from the Elk County General Hospital in Ridgway. She was a long-time member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Ridgway where she had been treasurer of the United Methodist Women and a member of the Mary Martha Circle, serving at one point as president. She was a member and former president of the Port-Lake Civic Club, a director of the local AARP for a number of years and also active at the Ridgway Senior Center.
Hallie loved gardening, sewing, quilting and reading. She is survived by two daughters, Rita G. Miller, and her husband, Clyde, of Ridgway, and Rhea E. Knoderer, and her husband, Elmer, Warrenton; six grandchildren, Shawna, David, Kathy, Jeff, Eric and Derek; seven great-grandchildren, Evan, Kayla, Emily, Daniel, Katie, Cole and Zack; two sisters, Edna Thomson and Deane Shimmel, both of Overland Park, Kansas; three stepchildren, Gilberta Myers, Ridgway, Tymer DeCecchis, Wilmington, Delaware, and Joe DeCecchis, Copenhagen, New York; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Samuel Payne Jameson, Thomas DeCecchis and Malcolm Anderson; two sisters, Mary Anderson and Viola LaHue; and three step­children, Howard DeCecchis, Edna Elmquist and Onorina Cesa. Memorials may be directed to Trinity United Methodist Church or Ridgway Senior Center.


Beck, Ruth E. Kornblum - Ruth E. Beck passed away Saturday, September 24, 2016 at Community Hospital in Fairfax, Missouri at the age of 75. Ruth was a beautiful spirit loved by many. Laughter followed her wherever she went. She was a shoulder to cry on and always had a kind, supportive word for her family and many friends.

She LOVED to fish and happily baited hooks for her grandchildren when they were younger. Ruth enjoyed being outdoors and participated in several float trips with her friends from work. Perpetually young at heart, she was game to try just about anything, including parasailing and inner tubing. More than anything, she loved her family!

Ruth was the daughter of Alfred Frank and Renate Ottilie (Benz) Kornblum. Born March 24, 1941, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she attended Shorewood High School, Shorewood, Wisconsin, graduating in 1959.

On December 10, 1960, Ruth was united in marriage to Kenneth Beck. They became the parents of three children, Julie, Robert and Timothy, eventually making their home in St. Joseph in 1967. They later divorced.

Ruth was a stay-at-home mom, who was active in many of her children's activities. She worked for a short time at Home Savings Association as a bookkeeper and later was employed by The Buchanan County Farmer publication working in every facet of the business. Ruth later worked for St. Joe Harley Davidson and relocated for a short time to Creston, Iowa, where she worked at Don's Harley Davidson. She was affectionately called "Grandma Harley" by many family members. The last few years, Ruth worked in clerical at WRDCC and sales at JCPenney's in St. Joseph. She made many lifelong, faithful friends at these jobs. In December 2013, Ruth moved to Rock Port, Missouri, to be closer to her daughter, Julie, where she lived to the present time.

Besides her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by infant granddaughter, Sarah Kendall, and brother, Theodore Kornblum. Survivors include daughter, Julie Burke and husband, Brad, Rock Port; two sons, Robert Beck and wife, Stacie, St. Joseph, and Timothy Beck and wife, Denise, Creston, Iowa; grandchildren, Jesse Kendall and wife, Michelle, Emily Burke, Ryan Beck and wife, Megan, Trevor Beck and wife, Kristen, Katie Burke, Breanna Beck, Andrew Beck, Jared Beck and Sara Beck; one great-granddaughter, Elliana Beck, and her companion Mick Finnell.

Funeral Service: 11:00 AM, Wednesday, September 28, Wesley United Methodist Church, St. Joseph.
Interment: Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph.

Bedell, Bert J.

Bert J. Bedell, son of John and Hester Miller Bedell, was born Oct 4, 1898 in Hugo, Colo. He passed away at the Community Hospital in Fairfax on May 17,1987 at the age of 88 years.
In 1901 he came to Missouri with his family. Bert attended school in the Angel School District south of Rock Port After his schooling he and his brother began farming.
On July, 1937 he married Lily Owens Bedell in Sidney, Iowa. They made their home and farmed in the Nishnabotna area. Lily passed away July 3,1986.
Bert was a member of the Rock Port First Christian Church and the North Star Lodge Number 157, AF. & AM. of Rock Port He had served on the Angel and Nishnabotna school boards. For 10 years he was employed by the ASCS office and had also served for 10 years as an ASCS Committeeman. He had served as secretary of the Mill Creek Drainage District for 15 years.
He is survived by 1 granddaughter, Deanna Bedell of Ukiah, Calif.; 1 grandson, Lt Duane Bedell of Port Orchard, Wash.; 2 great grandchildren: Dax and Aubree Bedell; daughter-in-law, Zula Bedell of Kingsport, Tenn.; granddaughter-in-law, Susan Bedell of Port Orchard. Wash.
Besides his parents and wife, Lily, he was preceded in death by 1 son Dean Bedell, 3 sisters and 5 brothers.
Services were held May 22 at the Minter Funeral Chapel in Rock Port conducted by Rev. Linda son. Intermentwas in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. Fair­fax.
Pallbearers were: James Amthor, Robert Hecker. Thomas Dougherty, Donald Oooper, Kenneth Owens, Virgil Rosenbohm.

 

Burke, Jacqueline Sue Vance Muntz -

Jacqueline Sue Burke was born August 8,1945, in Hamburg, Iowa, the daughter of Robert E. and Genevieve Roberts Vance. She passed away at Community Hospital in Fairfax, on May 22, 1987, at the age of 41 years.
She attended school in Rock Port and Tarkio, Missouri, and graduated from Tarkio High School.
On March 7,1963, she was united in marriage to J.R. Muntz. They made their home in Rock Port and to, this union one daughter, Christy, was born.
She married Gary Burke on March 9,1967, and lived in the Fairfax community. To this union two sons, Rick and Scott, were born.
For the past few months she has made her home with her daughter, Christy, in Columbia.
She attended the Assembly of God Church.
Surviving are: her daughter, Christy McCoy, Columbia; two sons, Rick Burke, Columbia and Scott Burke, Fairfax; one grandson, Joshue McCoy; her mother, Genevieve Millsap, Tarkio; paternal grandmother, Nora Vance and maternal grandfather, Grant Roberts, both of Tarkio.
Preceding her in death was her father, Robert E. Vance, on February 9, 1960.
Services were held Monday afternoon, May 25, at the Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio, conducted by Pastor Robert Smith. Interment was in Tarkio Home Cemetery, Tarkio.
Pallbearers were: David Vance, Norman Vance, Ira Paul Smith, Curtis Jones, Greg Millsap, Billy Paul Smith.

 

Burke, Willie M. -

Memorial services were held on Monday, April 23, 2001, at 7 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Tarkio, Missouri, for Willie M. Burke, Fairfax. The officiating minister was Phil Robbins. Services were under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home of Fairfax.
Willie M. Burke, age 43, passed away at her home in Fairfax on Friday, April 20, 2001, following a long illness. She was the daughter of Esler and Evalina (Landory) Henry and was born in Beaumont, Texas, on May 18, 1957.
Willie grew up and attended schools in Beaumont and Houston, Texas, areas. For the past 18 years, she has been a resident of the Fairfax community where she had operated an upholstery shop.
Survivors include two sons, Timothy Burke, Tarkio, MO, and Stephen Burke, Fairfax; and a daughter, Rachel Burke, Fairfax. Willie was preceded in death by her parents.
Willie loved reading the Bible and sharing what she learned from it with others. Memorials may be directed to Kendallwood Hospice, St. Joseph, Missouri, in care of the Exchange Bank of Fairfax.


Burns, Raymond Clark -

Raymond Clark Burns, 85, Tarkio, died early Sun­day morning, May 31, 1987, at a Tarkio health care center.
He was born in Tingley, Iowa, May 1,1902 and lived in Fairfax in his early years, where he farmed a short time.
On Oct 30,1949, he married Ethel Knepper in Rock Port They made their home in Tarkio, where he worked for International Harvester Co., until his retirement in 1972.
He was a member of the Tarkio Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder, trustee and usher for many years.
Surviving are his wife, Ethel Burns of the home; a son R.C. Burns, Kansas City; two brothers, Albert Burns, Tarkio; and Willis Burns, Shenandoah, Iowa; a stepson, Lawrence Dale Knepper; three step grand­children; two step great grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday at Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio. Burial was in the Tarkio Home Cemetery.

 

Burns, Ronald G. -

Ronald G. Burns, 65, died peacefully of cancer at his home in West Des Moines, Iowa, on Tuesday, September 6, 2005. A visitation was held from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, September 9, at McLaren's Funeral Chapel in West Des Moines. Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. with entombment in the Resthaven Mausoleum immediately following.
Ronald was born on August 4, 1940, to Mina Iona and Albert Lee Burns in Westboro, Missouri. He graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri, with a degree in mathematics. He began his mathematics teaching career at Sedalia, Missouri, also teaching in Rock Port, Missouri; Leon, Iowa; Belle Plaine, Iowa; and 29 years at Valley High School in West Des Moines. Ronald retired in 1999 after a teaching career of 36 years. Ronald was a member of the West Des Moines United Methodist Church, Phi Sigma Epsilon Fraternity, and the West Des Moines Education Association.
Ronald married Marilyn Joyce Stuber on May 31, 1970, in Cosby, Missouri. They made their home in West Des Moines for 35 years.
Ronald is survived by his wife of 35 years, Marilyn; daughters, Ronda (Cordell Pool) and Dianne (Chris Coleman); son, Royce (Julie Bullock); brother, Gary (Gail) of Fairfax, Missouri, and children, Theresa (Don) Franken of Tipton, Missouri, and Michelle Burns of Kansas City, Missouri; nieces Emily and Katherine; aunts, Alice Burns of Shenandoah, Iowa, and Anna Mae Kemerling of Fairfax, Missouri; sisters-in-law, Ramona (Fred) Kruse, Elaine (Gordon) Epps, Shirley (Richard) Taylor, and Karen (Terry) Yount; broth­ers-in-law, Dan and Stan Stuber; and a large extended family.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Hospice of Central Iowa or the West Des Moines United Methodist Church.


Burns, Russell -

Services were held for Russell H. Burns of Kansas City Saturday afternoon, May 30 at the Schooler Funeral Home in Fairfax, conducted by Rev. Blake Richter. Interment was in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax.
Pallbearers were David Burns, William Burns, Gary Burns, Ronald Burns, Herb Sutter and Everett Wake. Miss Thalia Beck was in charge of music.
Russell H. Burns was born in Iowa Nov. 2, 1905, the son of Clark and Lola Kish Burns, and died at the St Luke's Hospital in Kansas City May 27,1987 at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 26 days.
He was raised in the Tarkio and Fairfax areas, and graduated from high school from Fairfax, class of 1925. He was a retired grocery sales distributor manager of the Mid-West area.
He married the former Lois Rhoades in 1928 and they made their home in the Kansas City area.
He was a member of the Disabled Veterans of Amer­ica in Kansas City; Fairfax Presbyterian church; and was an army veteran of World War II.

Survivors   include his wife of the home in Kansas City; three brothers, Albert Burns, Raymond Burns, both of Tarkio; Willis Burns, Shenandoah, la.

 

Bywater, Ben -

Ben Bywater, 91, Tarkio, died early Sunday morning, May 31, 1987, at the home of his daughter, Virginia Jones, in Tarkio,
He was born in Camden Point, Mo., Dec. 22,1895 and moved to Tarkio in 1914. In 1917, he entered the Army and served in France during World War I. He received an honorable discharge in 1918, and he was the recipient of the Purple Heart
On June 20,1920, he married the former Armilda Helen O'Bannan in Tarkio, where they made their home. She survives of the home. He worked as a carpenter and truck gardner.
He was a member of the Tarkio Assembly of God Church, and a charter member of the Allen Schiffern American Legion Post No. 199 of Tarkio.
Additional survivors include three daughters: Virginia Jones, Tarkio; Mildred Smith, Fairfax; Annie Bowers, Ames, Iowa; four sons: Eddie Bywater and Presley Bywater, both of Tarkio; Lester Bywater, Avoca, Iowa; Ralph Bywater, Garden Grove, Calif; a sister, Frankie Hitzelberger, St Joseph; a brother, Ransome Bywater, St Joseph; 36 grandchildren; and 43 great grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday morning at Tarkio Assembly of God Church. Burial was in Tarkio Home Cemetery, with full military rites under the auspices of Allen Schiffern American Legion Post No. 199 of Tarkio.

 

Chestnut, Rebecca Lynne Roof -

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 23, 2005, at United Trinity Church in Hamburg, Iowa, for Rebecca Lynne Chestnut, Hamburg. Interment was made at the Tabor Cemetery in Tabor, Iowa. Pastor Melvin Hurst officiated. Services were under the direction of Rash-Gude Funeral Home, Nebraska City, Nebraska.
Rebecca Lynne (Roof) Chestnut, age 40 of Hamburg, passed away Monday evening, December 19, 2005. Rebecca was born on July 27, 1965, in Nebraska City, the daughter of Marion and Linda (Forney) Roof. She later married Lewis Chestnut on November 12, 1998, in Sidney, Iowa.
Rebecca was a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, niece and friend. She had an adventurous spirit which she often expressed while riding motorcycles, hiking, camping, scuba diving and being the crew chief for her husband's RAGBRI team. She also loved working outdoors in the yard, gardening, decorating, shopping with the girls, coaching fourth-sixth grade girls' basketball and rooting for the Denver Broncos. Her zest for life was contagious and will continue to live on in the those whose lives she touched.
Rebecca was employed at Community Hospital Association in Fairfax, as a radiology technician. She loved her work and the relationships she developed with her co-workers and patients. She was a member of PEO and the United Trinity church where she worked with the youth group and also served on the church board.
Rebecca is survived by her loving husband, Lewis of Hamburg; daughters, Hilary and Emily Woltemath, Hamburg; stepchildren, Megan and Alex Chestnut, Hamburg; her parents, Marion and Linda Roof, Tabor; brother, Kelley Roof, Tabor; and numerous other relatives and friends. Memorials may be directed to Community Hospital Associa­tion, Fairfax.

 

Collins, Robert D. "Rip" -

Robert D. (Rip) Collins, 63 of Craig was born at Westboro, and died Sunday, Nov. 1,1987 at a hospital in Omaha, Nebr,
He was a graduate of Tarkio High School, and a member of the Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Collins of the home in Craig; three daughters, Mary Beth Collins of the home in Craig; Debbie Rankin, Maryville; Patricia Wilcoxson, Clinton, Okla; three stepsons and one stepdaughter, Patrick Nichols of Maryland; Daniel Chapasko of Texas; Larry Chapasko of Virginia; Charlotte Dunn, Maryville. A sister, Leta Hollam, Red Oak, la.; four grandchildren, four stepgrand-children and a great grandchild. ,
Services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Church of the Nazarene in Craig. Burial was in Home Cemetery, Tarkio.

 

Cradit, Len Lomax -

Len Lomax Cradit, 80, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 13, 1985, at the Excelsior Springs, Mo., City Hospital. Mr. Cradit was born on Oct. 4, 1904, in Tarkio to Virgil C. and Anna (Hackl) Cradit. In 1929 he moved to Excelsior Springs.
Mr. Cradit had been a restaurant owner in Excelsior Springs. He was also a member of the Excelsior Springs First Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge.
Immediate survivors include: one son, Len Lomax Cradit Jr., Omaha, Neb.; his mother, Mrs. Anna Cradit, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; one sister, Mrs. Josephine Simpson, Tarkio; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A Masonic service was held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the Prichard Funeral Chapel in Excelsior Springs. Burial was at the Masonic Cemetery in Excelsior Springs.

 

Crouse, Jessie Atkins

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 16, 2001, at the Christian Church in Wymore, Nebraska, for Jessie Crouse of Wymore. Rev. Jon Palmquist officiated. Interment was made in the Liberty Cemetery, Liberty, Nebraska, under the direction of Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home, Wymore.

Jessie Crouse, age 84, passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Beatrice Good Samaritan Home, Beatrice, Nebraska. Jessie was born April 15, 1916, at Craig, Missouri, to John and Bertha (Long) Atkins. She attended school in Craig, and married Ted Crouse March 5, 1932. They moved to Liberty, Nebraska, in 1947, where Jessie was a resident for 54 ytears. She was active in the Liberty American Legion Auxiliary and the Liberty Christian Church.
Jessie was an accomplished cook, famous for her bread baking, pies and special recipes such as her bubble cake. She was the Liberty School cook for 20 plus years. She loved to quilt and embroider. Jessie took great delight in her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Survivors include two sons, O.J. and Jan Crouse and Bill and Loree Crouse, both of Beatrice; three daughters, Peggy and George Henrichs, Wymore, Delpha and Edd Riley, Carroll, Nebraska, and Elmeda and Bill Arterburn, Beatrice; two sisters, Marie Randall, Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Frances Walker, Fairfax; 19 grandchildren; 24 great­grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Jessie was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a son, Ted, Jr., in 1960; son-in-law, J.B. Ruyle in 1968; and a great-grandson, Chad Dickinson in 1996s. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association or the Wymore Rescue Unit.

 

Davis, George Edward -

George Edward Davis, age 79 of Las Cruces, NM, entered eternal life Saturday, January 14, 2006 at La Posada-Mesilla Valley Hospice.
George was born August 28, 1926, in Fairfax, Missouri, to Donald Dale and Blanch McMahon Davis. Mr. Davis served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy and Army during World War II and the Korean War. After his military discharge, he worked as a Soil Conservationist, from which he retired.
At his request cremation will take place and no services planned. Inurnment of cremains will take place at a later date in the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels and Baca's Mimbres Crematory, Las Cruces.

 

 

Davis, Jack -


Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 19, 1985, at 2 p.m. at the Tarkio United Methodist Church for John Milton (Jack) Davis, Jr. of Tarkio. Reverend Asher McDaniel conducted the services under the direction of Davis Funeral Home of Tarkio. Interment was made in the Tarkio Home Cemetery. A special Masonic service was held Friday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home, after which the family received friends.
Jack Davis passed away at his home in Tarkio on Thursday, Jan. 17, 1985, at the age of 56. Jack was born in Omaha, Neb., June 9, 1928, to Evelyn Fern (Scarlett) and John M. Davis. He attended the Tarkio Public Schools and was a 1949 graduate of Tarkio College. Following his graduation from mortuary school in St. Louis, Mo., Jack served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp for a period of four years. He then returned to Tarkio and entered the family funeral home business and the family furniture business. Close to the time of his death, Jack was still actively involved in the business of Davis Funeral Home. Jack married Mildred Louise (Kelly) Dragoo Aug. 15, 1961.
Jack loved Tarkio and served this community in every way, serving on the Park Board, Rotary Club, Tarkio Community Betterment, Chamber of Commerce, Tarkio Development, Atchison County Development Corporation, and the Tarkio City Council for four years and as Mayor for four years. Jack was specially honored with the Tarkio "Citizen of the Year" award in 1969. He was presently a member of the Board of the American Bank of Tarkio, N.A., secretary-treasurer of the Tarkio Home Cemetery Association, had served on the Tarkio Golf Board, and was on the Community Hospital Development Board at Fairfax, Mo.
Jack loved the youth of this community by serving on the Tarkio R-I School Board, the Atchison County School Board, the High School Rodeo Board, for several years the treasurer of the Tarkio College Alumni Association, and was presently on the Board of Directors of Tarkio College.
Jack lived his faith by serving his United Methodist Church not only on the local level, but also on the district and conference boards. He was also a member of the Northwest Lodge Number 358, A.F. & A.M., Albany Chapter Number 116, Royal Arch Mason, A & A Scottish Rite of Free Masonry of St. Joseph, Mo., Fairfax Chapter Number 373 Order of the Eastern Star in Fairfax, Mo., and the Allen-Schiffern American Legion Post Number 199 of Tarkio. Jack did many things for his community, so much more than is mentioned here. He really loved Tarkio.
Jack loved his family and leaves to survive his wife, Mildred (Millie) of the home; six children, Jackquelyn Sue Curry of Camden, Ala., John Martin Davis of Blanchard, Iowa, David Mark Davis of Tarkio, Mary Ellen Oswald of Fairfax, Deborah Lynn Lindsay of Tarkio, and Deanne Davis of Tarkio; three sons-in-law, Dickey Curry, Richard Oswald, and James Lindsay; two daughters-in-law, Sondra Ryals Davis and Denise Nuckolls Davis; 12 grandchildren, Joan and Jamie Curry, Melissa, Jay, Dusty and Scarlett Davis, Ryan, Joshua and Timothy Oswald and Amanda, Jimmy and Tommy Lindsay. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
Memorials may be directed to the Tarkio United Methodist Church, Tarkio College or Community Hospital Association in Fairfax, Mo.

 

Deardorff, Charles -

Charles Everett Deardorff, age 81, died on April 27, 2012, after a brief illness. Charles was born in Burlington Junction, MO, on April 7, 1931, the son of Everett Amos and Alberta (Jones) Deardorff.
His early education was in Fairfax, MO, after which he attended Northwest Missouri State College. During the Korean War, Charles served as a Russian linguist in the US Air Force, and was based in Japan. Following his military service, he continued his education at Kansas University, where he met and married Andrea Paul, his wife of 55 years. Charles graduated from KU with a double major in Russian and German language and literature.
Charles worked in communications intelligence at the National Security Agency for two years before attending Indiana University and earning an M.A. in Slavic languages and literatures. He taught for two years at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, before moving to Exeter, NH, in 1962, where he established the Russian language program at Phillips Exeter Academy. Charles taught at PEA for over 30 years. He served as dormitory head, chairman of the Modern Language Department, and was appointed the Robert W. Kessler Professor of Modern Languages. Charles led numerous student trips to the Soviet Union (now Russia). He also studied at Moscow University and Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) University and taught Russian at Eton College in England.
After his retirement in 1993, he traveled, cooked, read, followed the Red Sox, and enjoyed his lifelong passion of hunting and shooting trap and skeet.

Charles is survived by his wife, Andrea; his son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Sandra Deardorff, and grandchildren Ben, Alex, and Julia; his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Brian Malcolm and grandchildren, Samantha and Joe Gardner; and his daughter Marceny and son-in-law, Hal Bourne and grandchildren, Josie, Cooper and Otto. He is also survived by a brother, David Deardorff, and several nephews.
Private services will be held at a later date. Contributions in memory of Charles may be made to the American Red Cross. Arrangements are by the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.

 

Douglas, Kevrin L. -

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 25, 2001, at the New Life Assembly Church in Kearney, NE, for Kevrin L. Douglass, Tarkio, formerly of Kearney. Reverends Robert Wine and John Good-brake officiated. Interment was made in the Kearney Cemetery, Kearney, under the direction of Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary of Kearney. Military rites were conducted by the Kearney V.F.W. Post #759, Kearney American Legion Post #52 and the Kearney National Guard Unit.
Kevrin L. Douglass, 25, passed away Sunday, January 21, 2001, as a result of a motor vehicle accident. He was born May 18, 1975, in Minden, NE, to Dennis and Margaruite (Lammers) Douglass. He was home schooled in Kearney and then attended Kearney High School his senior year, graduating in 1994. Kevrin enlisted June 16, 1994, in the U.S. Army and received his Honorable Discharge on June 15, 1997.
On July 3, 1996, Kevrin married Tory Lynn Medley in Kearney. They lived in Junction City, KS. He was stationed at Fort Riley, KS. Following military service, Kevrin worked for Wonder Bread in Manhattan, KS. They moved to Tarkio where Kevrin was employed in various areas of agriculture.

Kevrin was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Kearney where he was baptized
tist Church in Tarkio. He enjoyed the Nebraska Cornhuskers, spending time with his children and assembling model cars.
Kevrin is survived by wife, Tory L., daughter, Jaimie Lee, and twin sons, Michael Lawrence and Marccus Allen, all of the home in Tarkio; mother and step­father, Margaruite and Dick Brand of Loomis, NE; father and stepmother, Dennis and Barbe Douglass, Grand Island, NE; sister, Crystal Herron, Rock Port, MO; brother, JaWayne Douglass, Loomis; stepsister, Tracy Kimberly, Holdrege, NE; stepbrothers, Scott Brand, Hawaii, and Stacy Brand, Midwest City, OK; and stepgrandparents, Delmer and Jean Brand of Bertrand, NE.
Kevrin was preceded in death by grandparents, Fritz and Velma Lammers, Lawrence Douglass, and Vera and Leonard Folchert. Memorials are suggested to the family.

 

Douglas, Marian Graves Frede -

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, February 26, 2001, at the Presbyterian Church in Fairfax, for Marian J. Douglas, Rock Port, Missouri, formerly of Fairfax. Rev. Chet Mason officiated. Interment was made in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax, under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax.
Marian Graves Frede Douglas, age 91, passed away on Friday, February 23, 2001, at Community Hospital Association in Fairfax. She was born in Fairfax on September 2, 1909, the daughter of Samuel W. and Vivian Price Graves. Marian attended Pleasant Ridge country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Fairfax High School in 1927.
Marian began teaching elementary school even before graduation from high school when a teacher fell ill and Marian completed the year for her. After securing her 60-hour lifetime teaching certificate, she taught in several schools in Atchison County.
Through the years Marian continued taking night classes and summer school sessions to finish her qualifications and received her BS in education from Tarkio College, Tarkio, Missouri, in 1957. She continued teaching at seven rural schools and Watson, Rock Port and Fairfax town schools until her retirement, a span of 42 years.
Marian married Donald D. Frede in Watson, Missouri, in 1937. They lived in Watson for some time. During the second World War they lived in Omaha, Nebraska, and worked at the Martin Bomber plant. Following the war, they returned to Rock Port and settled on a small farm. Marian resumed teaching at Opp rural school.
Don Frede died in May of 1961. Marian later married Donald Douglas and they resided at the Fair Haven Apartments in Fairfax. Following his death, she continued to live at Fair Haven and, in the summer of 2000, moved to Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port, where she was living until her recent illness.
Marian was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Fairfax, where she had taught Sunday School and had been a member of the Board of Deacons. She was a firm believer in education and promoted her many nieces and nephews to pursue further education following high school. Today many of them, including the great nieces and nephews, have advanced degrees. Her steadfast commitment to her students, as well as the nieces and nephews developed into a feeling that, indeed, all of them were her children.
Survivors include her brother, Maurice Graves, and wife, Margaret, Fairfax; sister-in-law, Josie Graves, Des Moines, Iowa; and stepdaughters, Ruth White, Hamburg, Iowa, Donna McCann, Leavenworth, Kansas, and Dixie Kerns, Savannah, Missouri. There are many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; and great-great-nieces and nephews who also survive.
Marian was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Rebecca Moore; two brothers, Wilferd and Winston Graves; and her two husbands, Don Frede and Don Douglas. Memorials may be directed to the Fairfax Presbyterian Church.

 

Dowell, Gladys -

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 12, 2001, at Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio, Missouri, for Gladys Adell Dowell of Tarkio. Pastor Matthew Teel officiated. Interment was made in Tarkio Home Cemetery in Tarkio under the direction of Davis Funeral Home of Tarkio.
Gladys Adell (Bartram) Dowell, age 88, passed away Friday, August 10, 2001, at Northview Manor in Tarkio. She was born May 9, 1913, in Maryville, Missouri, to Theada (Earlywine) and Irvin Bartram. She attended Horace Mann School, graduated from Mary­ville, Missouri, High School, and attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville for one year.
Gladys was married April 12, 1933, in Savannah, Missouri, to Walter Lewis Dowell of Maryville. Their home, for many years, was Overland Park, Kansas, until they moved to Munich, Germany, for six years. While there, they traveled extensively throughout Europe and the British Isles. In 1975, they moved to Tarkio. Mr. Dowell passed away February 3, 1992.
Gladys was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Overland Park. Memorials may be directed to the United Methodist Church, the Tarkio Presbyterian Church, or Northview Manor, all in Tarkio.


Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Mary Kay and Jack Hixson, Tarkio; grandchildren, Cherie and Mike Heits, Todd and Debbie Hixson, Jackie and Casey Martin, Elaine and Stewart Peregrine; and six great-grandchildren. Brian, Brad and Mallory Heits, Grace Martin, Dru Peregrine and Alec Hixson.
Besides her parents and husband, Gladys was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Bridgeman and Elizabeth Zuckowski; brothers, Irvin J. Bartram of Mission, Kansas, and Emmett Bartram of Maryville; and grandson, Gregory Hixson.

 

 

Elton, Thomas E. "Bub" - Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, January 29, 2001, at the United Methodist Church in Tarkio for Thomas E. Elton of Trenton, MO, formerly of Tarkio. Pastor Barry Boulware and Reverend James Shrieves officiated. Interment was made in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Mound City, MO, under the direction of Whitaker-Eads Funeral Homes, Inc., of Trenton.
Thomas E. (Bub) Elton, 83, passed away Wednesday, January 24,2001, at his home in Trenton where he had been a resident since August of 1999. He was born on February 14, 1917, on a farm east of Mound City to Charles D. and Gertrude (Van Deventer) Elton. He attended Mound City schools and graduated in 1935. After high school, Mr. Elton entered the Army on April 12, 1942, and served two years in Italy during World War II, where he received numerous awards such as three bronze stars, Combat Commission Second Lieutenant, Combat Victory Ribbon and an infantry badge. He was honorably discharged February 22, 1946.
After leaving the service, Mr. Elton started working for the United Telephone Company at Mound City in October of 1950. On September 17, 1955, he was united in marriage to Betty Redmon at the Craig Church of God in Craig, MO. In May of 1960, Mr. Elton transferred to Tarkio where he retired in 1982 after 32 years of service.
Mr. Elton was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Mound City, Lions Club and VFW of Mound City. He was also a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church of Trenton and a former member of the United Methodist Church of Tarkio. He also served on several boards including the Board of Trustees as secretary. Mr. Elton helped with the Boy Scouts when possible and was a treasurer of the Cub Scouts for three years.
Mr. Elton is survived by his wife, Betty R. Elton, of the home; one daughter, Renee Hull and her husband, Curt Hull, of Trenton; one son, Charles W. Elton and and his wife, .Dr Darla Liles of Greenville, NC; four sisters, Virginia Andes, Joy Thiemann and Doris Wilson, all of Tarkio, and Margaret Moulthrop, of Waco, TX; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Elton is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Dellie Elton; three sisters, Norene Bickel, Frances Bohart and Betty Cummins. Memorials may be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association.

Fair, Lela Helen -

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 2, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. at the Fairfax Baptist Church for Lela Helen Fair, Fairfax. Rev. Steve Suttill officiated. Interment was made in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax, under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax.
Lela Helen (Rievley) Fair, age 83, passed away on Friday, June 29, 2001, at an Omaha, Nebraska hospital. Mrs. Fair was born on August 26, 1917, in Chaonia, Missouri, where she was raised. She lived in Taskee, Missouri, before moving to Fairfax in 1944.

Mrs. Fair graduated from Williamsville, Missouri, HighSchool, where she was a member of the basketball team that won a state championship. Mrs.Fair was employed as a factoryworker at the Fairfax Manufacturing Company.

Mrs. Fair was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Piecemakers Quilt Guild's both of Fairfax. She was a charter member of the Community Hospital Auxiliary of which she was currently president and was Auxiliarian of the Year. She was also involved with Reach to Recoverv and the American Cancer Society. On August 14. 1934, she married Winzel Fair. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry, Urbana. Ohio, and Larry, San Jose, California: two daughters, Virginia Riley, Holden, Missouri, and Judy Anderson, Omaha; a brother, Marvin Rievley, St. Louis, Missouri; a sister, Velda Van Dyke, St. Louis; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Fair was preceded in death by her parents John and Lizzie Rievley: her husband; two brothers; two sisters and two grandchildren. Memorials may be directed to the Community Hospital Auxiliary education Fund.

 

Fisher, Betty Lee Graves -

Betty Lee (Graves) Fisher, North Kansas City, Missouri, passed away on Sunday, July 25, 2004, at North Kansas City Hospital.
Mass of Christian burial was on Thursday, July 29, at St. Patrick's Parish and burial was in Resurrection North Cemetery both in North Kansas City.
Betty was born on February 9, 1926, near Fairfax, Missouri, to William J. and Georgia Graves. On April 26, 1947, she was united in marriage to Richard Fisher of St. Joseph, Missouri. They made their home in North Kansas City.
Survivors include her husband, Richard; son, Kevin, and wife, Elise, daughter, Georgia, and husband Jim Fox, six grandchildren, one great-grand­daughter, all of Liberty, Missouri; brother, David Graves and sister, Phyllis Bradfield, both of Fairfax; and many nieces and nephews.


Flanagan, James W. -

James W. Flanagan of Auburn, California, died Thursday, December 8,2005, at age 82. Jim was born to Mc­Donald and Nancy (Choate) Flanagan at their farm home east of Fairfax, Missouri, on March 14, 1923. He graduated from Fairfax High School in 1941.
Jim attended the National School of Aeronautics and worked at Lockheed Vega in Kansas City, Missouri, before enlisting in the Army in December 1942. While serving, he became part of the legendary 502 Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101 Airborne Division, who landed on Utah Beach on D-Day. An International News Service picture of Jim holding a Nazi flag captured at a farm house near Ravenonville, France, is one of the most widely distributed and best known pictures associated with June 6, 1944.
After his military service, Jim spent the rest of his life working in the aviation industry, first in California, then Independence, Missouri, and again in California. He was a pilot, flight instructor, ground school instructor and mechanic, as well as a certified aircraft inspector.
On February 14,1949, Jim married Nell Cleveland in Altus, Oklahoma. They became parents of three children, Lucy, Sara and Michael. They divorced in 1976.
On December 17, 1994, Jim married Dorothy McAvoy. They lived in Auburn, California.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Floyd and Mac Flanagan; infant sister, Irene; sisters, Marie Martindale, Juanita Cohen, and Leone New; niece, Jackie Ball; and his son-in-law, Ted Short.
Survivors include his wife, Dottie, Auburn, California; daughters, Lucy Flanagan, Austin, Texas, and Sara Short, Lufkin, Texas; son, Michael Flanagan, Overland Park, Kansas; grandson, Barry Flanagan, New York City; Nell Flanagan Danner, Independence, Missouri; brothers, John Flanagan, Kansas City, Maurice Flanagan, Rock Port, Missouri, and Dick Flanagan, Maryville, Missouri; and sisters, Dott Lawrence, Rock Port, and Betty L. Sly, Fairfax.
James Wallace Flanagan was buried December 16, 2005, at the Leavenworth National Cemetery in Leavenworth, Kansas. A memorial service was held on December 14, 2005, in Auburn, California.-


Golden, Helen Louise -

Helen Louise Golden, age 69, Maryville, Missouri, passed from this life on Thursday, August 6, 2009. Helen was born on April 13, 1940, in Forest Green, Missouri. She is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, Charles Golden, Maryville. Other survivors include her three sisters; and three brothers.
A memorial graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 22, at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax. Graves, Wilferd Jr -

A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 12, 2001, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City, Iowa, for Wilferd W. "Will" Graves, Jr., of Sioux City. Reverend Fred Penner, pastor of the Glendale Baptist Church in Sioux City, officiated. A military flag presentation was made by the American Legion Monahan Post No. 64. An additional memorial service was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, at the First Baptist Church in Tarkio. Reverend Glenn Scott, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Tarkio, officiated.
Wilferd W. "Will" Graves, Jr., age 68, passed away Friday, March 9, 2001, at the Indian Hills Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Sioux City after a year-long battle with cancer. He was born on October 19, 1932, in Fairfax to Alta Mary (Peterson) and Wilferd W. Graves, Sr. He graduated from Tarkio College in Tarkio, MO.
Wilferd Graves, Jr., served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He married Marilyn J. Frohn on September 14, 1952, in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Wilferd Graves, Jr., operated the family dairy farm in Tarkio for several years. He then worked at Honeywell Corporation in Colorado from 1962 until 1968 when he moved to Sioux City. In 1968, he joined the staff at Western Iowa Technical College as a department head and instructor of electronics' technology. He was well known for his electronic/laser light shows.
Wilferd Graves, Jr., was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of Abu Bekr Shrine Temple, and a member of the Sioux City Historic Railroad Association. He was a licensed engineer to operate steam locomotives. He enjoyed traveling and fishing as well as John Deere memorabilia.
Survivors include: one daughter. Sheila Graves, Minneapolis, Minnesota; one brother, Bruce Graves and his wife, Janice, Tarkio; three nieces; seven nephews; 11 grandnieces and nephews; and one foster sister, Sandy Roberts, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Wilferd Graves, Jr., was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, on September 4, 1988, in South Sioux City; and his parents. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society in Mr. Graves' name.


Gray, Joan Walkup -

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 20, 2004, at the Craig Presbyterian Church, Craig, Missouri, for Joan Gray, Mound City, Missouri, formerly of Craig. Pastor Rob Self officiated. Interment was made in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Craig, under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Craig.
Joan was born in Fairfax, Missouri, on December 2, 1920. She was the daughter of Fred and Mildred (Ottman) Walkup. Joan grew up in Craig, Missouri, and attended school there.
On October 13, 1939, she became the wife of Harold M. Gray and they established their home in Craig where they spent the rest of their married life. Harold preceded his wife in death on March 13,2000. Joan has been a resident of Tiffany Heights Care Center in Mound City, Missouri, for the past four years. She was a member of the First Christian Church but began attending the Craig Presbyterian Church several years ago.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Jackye Sprague; a granddaughter, Meredith Sprague; and one brother, Jack Walkup. Joan is survived by a daughter, Pamela Nowling and her husband, Glen, of Vacaville, California; a son-in-law, Dick Sprague, Harrisonville, Missouri; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was an accomplished musician as well as an avid gardener. Joan also loved to play golf and was a wonderful seamstress and she took pride in decorating her home.

 

Green, Myrtle Myers

A memorial services was held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 28, 2005, at the Fairfax Christian Church for Iva Myrtle (Myers) Green, Fairfax. Rev. Allan Bash officiated. A private family burial will be at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax.
Iva Myrtle (Myers) Green was born November 8,1909 in Auxvasse, Missouri, the daughter of Forrest and Emily (Ford) Myers. She passed away at the Commu­nity Hospital in Fairfax, Missouri on Wednesday, December 21, 2005, at the age of 96 years.

Myrtle received her early education in Atchison County rural schools, and graduated from Rock Port High School in 1927. She was united in marriage to Newell Delaine Green on July 21,1928. They lived their entire married life in Fairfax, Missouri, and Myrtle continued to live in Fairfax after Newell passed away in February of 1977. They were the parents of two sons, George Richard and Gary Newell. In the last decade of her life she received loving nursing care as a resident at the Community Hospital.
During her childhood, she lived in the Linden Church area northwest of Rock Port and then on a farm west of Fairfax. She was a member of the English Grove Presbyterian Church and then, after her marriage, the Fairfax Christian Church, where, for over sixty years she was active in the Christian Women's Fellowship. She also enjoyed memberships in the Fairfax Sorosis Club, the Potluck Club, Sweet Adelines and several bridge clubs. After her children were in school, she was employed as a telephone operator for the United Telephone Company for many years, and later worked at the Community Hospital in various capacities in the laboratory, the kitchen, and patient accounts.
Survivors include her son, George Richard Green and his wife, Barbara Klein, of McLean, Virginia, two grandsons, George David Green of College Park, Maryland and Reginald Scott Green and his wife, Suzanne Forman, of Rockville, Maryland, and a great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Capri Green.
Besides her parents, her stepfather, Walter Curry, and her husband, Newell, Myrtle was preceded in death by her son, Gary Newell; and brothers, Russell, William, and Charles Myers; and sisters Nellie Mae Wulber, Forrest Lucille Myers, Mamie Gertrude Deatz, and Josephine Marie Sutter. Griffey, Eva Puett

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, March 8, 2004, at the Fairfax Baptist Church for Eva May Griffey, Tarkio, Missouri, formerly of Fairfax. Rev. Steve Suttill officiated. Interment was made in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax, under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax.
Eva was born at Warsaw, Missouri, on September 21, 1910, to Charles E. and Mary (Cochran) Puett. While still an infant, she moved with her family to Nodaway County, near Burlington Junction, Missouri. Eva attended rural schools in this area.
On January 13, 1930, she was united in marriage to Floyd A. Griffey. Mr. and Mrs. Griffey spent their entire married lives in Nodaway and Atchison counties. Mr. Griffey preceded his wife in death on January 11, 1975. They became the parents of four children, Donald Griffey, who died on July 10, 1948, Lucille Nielson, Kaiser, Missouri, Wilma Bradbury, Oregon, Missouri, and Marvin Griffey, Olathe, Kansas. Eva is also survived by eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Bill Puett, Fillmore, Missouri; and two sisters, Charlotte Prater, Savannah, Missouri, and Mary Brooks, Dayton, Wyoming.
Eva was a resident of Fairfax from 1952 until entering Northview Manor Nursing Home in Tarkio, Missouri, in 1993. She was a member of the Fairfax Baptist Church and also was an avid gardener.

In addition to her husband and one son, Eva was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Peggy Auey; three sisters, Irene Fitzpatrick, Pauline Buckingham and Mildred Neff; and by three brothers, Paul, Harold and Charles E. Haith, Leatha Mae Chamberlain -

Memorial graveside services and inurnment for Leatha Mae Haith of Tarkio, will be held on Saturday, July 21, 2001, at 10 a.m. at the Walnut Grove Cemetery, Brownville, NE, with Pastor James Shrieves officiating. Services are under the direction of the Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio, MO.
Leatha Mae (Chamberlain) Haith, 87, passed away on Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at the Clarkson Memorial Hospital, Omaha, NE. She was born on January 9, 1914, to Josephine (Kesterson) and Merton F. Chamberlain in Brownville, NE. In Leatha's early years she attended the Brownville schools and Peru College at Peru, NE.
On October 3, 1935, Leatha was united in marriage to John L. Haith at Sidney, IA. They made their home in Nemaha, NE, where John worked as a blacksmith. After moving northwest of Brownville to farm in 1940, they then moved to rural Peru to farm in 1953. In 1973, they moved to their farm southeast of Westboro, MO. Due to ill health, Leatha became a resident of Northview Manor in Tarkio, MO, in June of 2000. Leatha's duties as a farm wife, mother and grandmother kept her very busy through the years. Besides her family, she and John enjoyed square dancing and participated for many years. Leatha was a member of the North Starlette Community Club.
Survivors include husband, John, of Northview Manor at Tarkio; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Kay Haith, Tarkio; one sister, Lucille Wright, Auburn, NE; nine grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, Leatha was preceded in death by two sons, Larry and Bob Haith. Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association.

 

Haun, Violette Juanita Burns

Services were held last Thursday afternoon, May 10 for Violette Haun at the Christian Church in Fairfax, conducted by Rev. Reid Swindler and Rev. John Messer. Interment was in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax.
Mrs. Raymond Mitchell was in charge of the music and she accompanied Mrs. Hayden Pyeatt, soloist, who sang "In the Garden" and "Beyond the Sunset". Pallbearers were Rod Wells, Daryl Haun, Dwight Haun, Gary Daniel, William Wil-loughby and Jim Taylor.
Violette Juanita was born Oct. 20, 1903 at Tingley, la. the daughter of Clark Burns and Lola Kish. Her early childhood she lived with her parents at various places before coming to Fairfax. She graduated from Fairfax high school and attended NW-MSU, Maryville for two years. After that she taught in the rural schools in Atchison county.
On July 21, 1926 she was married to Raymond Haun at Albany and to this union four children were born, Robert Carol, Mary Louise, Donald L. and Maxine.
She died at the Bethesda Care Center in Tarkio where she made her home May 7, 1984 at the age of 80 years, 6 months and 17 days. The Haun family made their home in this area for 70 years.
Violette was a member of the BZN Extension Club, Fairfax Christian Church, and the Over 60 club. She was employed a number of years at the Fairfax hospital after her husband died in 1961.
Preceded her in death were the husband, Raymond Haun; a son and daughter, Robert in 1937 and Mary Louise Taylor in 1980.
Survivors include a, son and daughter, Donald L. Haun, Plattsburg; Maxine Pichelman, Edgerton; five brothers, Ray Burns, Albert Burns, both of Tarkio; Russell Burns, Robert Burns, both of Kansas City; Willis Burns, Shenandoah, la.; 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.


Hayden, Lillian French Armbruster -

Lillian (French) Armbruster Hayden passed away on Wednesday, August 4, 2004, at her home in Columbia, Missouri. She was born on August 4, 1926, in St. Louis, Missouri, to the Reverend Clifford and Amy French. While growing up she lived in St. Charles, Salisbury, Macon, Norborne, Columbia, Rock Port and Fairfax before graduating from Cameron High School in 1943.
Lillian received a B.A. degree from Central College in Fayette, Missouri, in 1946. She worked in Berkeley, Ferguson and Kinloch Schools (St. Louis County) before they merged. In 1980 she became elementary school librarian with the St. Louis Public Schools until she retired in 1996. In 1947 Lillian married John Armbruster in Ferguson, Missouri. They had three children, Dorothy Ann (Robin), John Clifford (J.C.) and David Joseph. Her husband, John, died in 1997. They had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Lillian married Paul Hayden, a family friend, in 1998 and moved to Columbia.
Survivors include her husband and friend, Paul; two sons, David, and wife, Lisa, and their son, John Adam of Ferguson, and J.C. and wife, Julie, and their daughters, Daphnie, Delia and Tatiania of Olympia, Washington; two sisters, Pat Seymour, and husband, Dale, Fairfax, and their son, Lane, Fairfax, and daughter, Gale, Pittsfield, Illinois, and Medora Ann French, Tarkio, Missouri; and stepchildren, Gennie Martinez and husband, Gene of Eolia, Pat Seitz and husband, Earl, Columbia, Ann Moore, Madison, Wisconsin, Mary Hayden, Columbia, Tom Hayden, Leander, Texas, and William Hayden and wife, Ann Elixhauser, Clarksville, Maryland. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 50 years, John Armbruster; their daughter, Robin; and a beloved mother-in-law, Mary E. Hayden. Arrangements were under the direction of Parker Funeral Service, Columbia.

 

Hays, Evelyn -

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at Westminster Presby­terian Church, Clarinda, Iowa, for Evelyn Hays of Clarinda. Eastern Star service was held on Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, followed by visitation with family. Interment was made in Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda, under the direction of Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda.
Evelyn Hays, age 75, passed away on Monday, May 7, 2001, at the Clarinda Regional Health Center in Clarinda. She was born on January 17, 1926, in Fairfax, to Gladys (French) and Richard Davis. She was united in marriage to Mernie Hays on January 20, 1947. Evelyn was head cook for the Clarinda School District until the late 1970's. She also cooked at the Little Duffer Restaurant, The Branding Iron and the Country Club. Evelyn and Mernie operated the Dew Drop Inn in the 1980's. She then continued work at the Kit N Kaboodle.
Evelyn was a member of the Order of Easter Star, Clarinda Chapter and Westminster Presbyterian Church. She had many interests which included refinishing furniture, caning chair seats and doing needle point. Evelyn was an avid cross word puzzle worker and loved to go fishing.
Survivors include her husband, Mernie, of the home; a son, Jerry Hays and his wife, Sue, Clarinda; two granddaughters, Heather Ripley and her husband, Philip, College Springs, Iowa, and Heidi Bond and her husband, Scott, Clarinda; three great-grandchildren, Matthew Hays, Samuel Ripley and Max Ripley; her mother, Gladys Farley, Fairfax; sisters, Ruth Blacketer, Tarkio, Missouri, Kathleen Nelson and her husband, Don, St. Joseph, Missouri, Lillie Kinman and her husband, Glenn, St. Joseph, and Lois Wiley and her husband, Dean, Fairfax; brothers, Charles Davis and his wife, Carolyn, Warsaw, Missouri, Richard Davis and his wife, Berniece, Independence, Missouri, and Larry Davis and his wife, Kathleen, St. Joseph. Evelyn was preceded in death by her father.

 


Hays, Mary Luella Weston -

Mary Luella Weston Hays was born April 6, 1901 in Sidney, la. and died at the Fairfax hospital Sunday morning, Nov. 1, 1987 at the age of 86.
She was married to Arlo C. Hays on Jan. 29, 1923 in Sidney, la. and to this union two daughters, Alice and Ellen were born. They farmed in the Grange Hall and Lone Cedar communities north of Rock Port, until they moved west of Fairfax in 1950.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Dec. 6,1973.
Surviving are two daughters, Alice Collyer, Dimmitt, Texas and Ellen Simpson, Fairfax; six grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren.
Services were held Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 4 at the Minter Funeral Chapel in Rock Port conducted by the Rev. Carroll Fischer. Burial was in Sidney Cemetery, Sidney, la.

 

Headrick, Ledrue B. -

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal, Missouri, for Ledrue B. (Gus) Hedrick, Hannibal. Pastor Paul Bond officiated. Interment was made in Grand View Burial Park.
Ledrue B. Hedrick, age 83, passed away on Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Willow Care Center, Hannibal. Mr. Hedrick was born on June 14, 1917, in Fairfax, to Beattie and Nancy E. Schooler Hedrick. Mr. Hedrick was a graduate of Fairfax High School in Fairfax. He was married to Doris M. McCarter on August 21, 1982, in Fairfax. She survives.
Mr. Hedrick was a retired stenographer for Burlington-Northern Railroad. He was a member of the First Methodist Church and also served as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts for 16 years. Mr. Hedrick was active in Little League baseball for eight years and YMCA flag football for three years. He was a former president of the Hannibal High School Band Boosters. Mr. Hedrick had previously served as an elder at the First Presbyterian Church. He was active in the senior citizen's dance group at the Admiral Coontz Recreation Center.
Mr. Hedrick is survived by his wife, Doris; four sons, David Hedrick, St. Peters, Robert Hedrick and Gary Hedrick, Hannibal and Bruce Hedrick, Dallas; two daughters, Dorothy Engle of Kansas City, and Julie Cain, Dallas; numerous grand­children; several great-grand­children; and two sisters-in-law, Phoneil Hedrick and Lola Hedrick.
Mr. Hedrick was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Mitchell; and two brothers, Elliott Lee Hedrick and Olin Claire Hedrick. Memorials may be directed to the First Methodist Church, the Blessing Hospice Program or the charity of the donor's choice.

 

Hines, Charles Oliver "Charlie Horse" -

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 6, 2001, at Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio for Charles Oliver Hines of Tarkio. Pastor Allan Bash officiated. Interment was in Home Cemetery in Tarkio under the direction of Davis Funeral Home of Tarkio.
Charles Oliver Hines, age 62, passed away at his home in Tarkio on Tuesday, July 3, 2001. He was born May 1, 1939, at Albany, Missouri, one of nine children, the son of Charles W. and Helen L. (Batson) Hines.
In Charlie's early years, he made his home with his family in Rock Port, Missouri, attended the Rock Port schools and worked for various local farmers. In 1969, he moved to Tarkio and worked for the Kenny Harris Trucking firm. Since 1994, Charlie Horse, as he was better known to all, began his own lawn service in Tarkio which he was presently operating. Fishing and stock car racing were his favorite pastimes and he loved visiting with his many friends. Charlie also enjoyed his family, especially his nieces and nephews.
Charlie is survived by his mother, Helen, of the home in Tarkio; four brothers, Ronald Hines, Ryers, Kansas, Junior Hines and wife, Barbara, Galva, Kansas, Billy Hines and wife, Sharon, Tarkio, and Leroy Hines and wife, Alice, Schuyler, Ne­braska; two sisters, Susan Shaw and husband, Harry, Fairfax, Missouri, and Faye Hines, Tarkio; nieces and nephews.
Preceding Charlie in death were his father. Charles, in 1986.


Hodgin, Willard T. -

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at Pleasant Hill Memorial Park Chapel, Sebastopol, California, for Willard T. Hodgin. Arrangements were under the direction of Pleasant Hills Memorial Park.
Willard T. Hodgin, age 93, passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2001, in San Fransico, California. He was born and raised on a farm 10 miles southeast of Fairfax. He attended Spring Valley and Daleview Schools and graduated from Daleview in 1925. Willard was educated at William Jewell College where he received his B.S. Williard moved to Sonoma County, California, in 1974. He loved his apple orchards in Sebastopol.
Survivors include his brothers Eldon Hodgin, San Fransico and Harold Hodgin, Fort Jones, California; nephew, Jim Hodgin, San Francisco; neices, Lynda Miles, Pacifica, California, and Jean Shirley, Berkeley, California; grandnephews, Eldon Hodgin and Seamus Hodgin, San Francisco, and Jon Glommen, Santa Cruz, California; and great grandnephews, Lachlan Glommen and William Glommen, Santa Cruz. Memorials may be made in his memory to the Hospice of San Francisco.

 

Irvine, Robert Sr -

Graveside services and inurnment were held at 2 p.m., on Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax, Missouri, for Robert Irvine, Sr., Fairfax. Reverend Nancy Profit officiated with military rites by Allen-Schiffern Post #199 American Legion. Services were under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax.
Robert E. Irvine, Sr., 88, passed away Saturday, March 27, 2004, at the Missouri Veterans' Home in Cameron, Missouri.
Bob was born on a farm near Fairfax, Missouri, on December 30, 1915. He graduated from Daleview and attended college at Maryville, Missouri, for a year. He joined the navy in 1943 and served as a radar man on two PT boats in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
Bob married Janis Mackey in August of 1947. Of this union were born three sons, Robert, Jr., Mike, and Steve. Bob lived and farmed his entire life in the Fairfax area.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hamilton Armstrong Irvine and Maude McElroy Irvine; a sister, Lola Folden; brothers, John, Francis (Spud), and Harry; and three half brothers, Hamilton, Jr., William, and Thomas.

Johnson, Dearl -

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 21, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Mount Olive Baptist Church near Oldfield, Missouri, for Houston Dearl Johnson, Maysville, Missouri. Interment was made in Hall Cemetery, Oldfield, under the direction of Bram Funeral Home, Maysville.
Houston Dearl Johnson, age 76, passed away on Wednesday April 18, 2001, at Heartland Hospital in St. Joseph, Missouri, following a long illness. He was born in Douglas County, Missouri on April 18, 1925, the son of Myrtle Ellen (Moore) and John Elbert Johnson.
On May 28, 1945, he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Lawrence in Fairfax, where they made their home for 45 years. To this union two daughters, Joann Whitford, Maysville, and Joyce Schooler, Ozark, Missouri, and one son, Jesse Dearl were born. Mr. Johnson was a carpenter for 30 plus years and had to retire because of an accident. In 1952, he trusted Jesus as his Savior and united with Fairfax Baptist Church, where he was a trustee and Sunday school teacher for several years.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Joann Whitford, and husband, James Earl, and Joyce Schooler and husband, Barry; two grandsons, Houston Harris Schooler, Ozark, and Joshua Earl Whitford, Springfield, Missouri; two granddaughters,   Jessica Joann Whitford, Springfield, and Hillary Beth Schooler, Ozark; one great-granddaughter, Alana Miakai Schooler, Ozark; one brother, Tom Johnson, Springfield; one brother-in-law, Everett W. Lawrence and wife, Barbara, Oldfield; three sisters-in-law, Anna Mae Lawrence, Huba Johnson Winslow and Gladys Johnson; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his two-day old son, Jesse Dearl; his parents; three brothers, James Everett, Charles Jesse and Elbert; three sisters, Minta Coffer, Bertie Shortt and Ercie Daves. Memorials may be directed to the donor's choice.

 

Johnson, John Forrest -

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, September 9, 2005, at the Presbyterian Church in Craig, Missouri, for John Forrest Johnson, Craig. Reverend David Seward officiated the services. Burial was made in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Craig. Services were under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Craig.
Forrest was born on the family farm, one and 1/2 miles northwest of Craig on November 5, 1914. He was the son of John and Tena Johnson. Forrest attended school in Craig, until his senor year in high school when he enrolled in Wentworth Military Academy at Lexington, Missouri. After graduating from Wentworth in 1932, Forrest enrolled in the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic. He graduated from college in 1934, and had the distinction of being the youngest licensed chiropractor in California.
Forrest was married to Helen Pritchett of California in 1933. They later divorced.
In 1942, Forrest enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a First Lieutenant in the infantry. Forrest participated in several island invasions in the southwest Pacific and received numerous commendations. He was wounded in action in 1945, and received a medical discharge. After his discharge, Forrest returned to Craig to take over the family farming operation.
On August 4, 1946, Forrest married Wilma Zachary Wright. In 1953, he became employed at the Craig Grain Elevator where he soon became manager. Forrest retired from this position after 27 years.
Forrest passed away at Tiffany Heights Care Center on September 6, 2005. He joined the Craig Presbyterian Church at any early age and was an active member his entire life. In addition to being a talented leader, Forrest was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, one who gave special meaning to the word family. Always an avid reader, he, later in life, admitted to four additional hobbies - his grandchildren. Other interests included working for the advancement of the Fairfax Community Hospital and the expansion of the Craig Senior Citizens' housing center, on whose boards he served. Rather than dwelling on the past, Forrest preferred speculating about the future.
Besides his parents, others preceding Forrest in death were a sister, Sadie Bradbury; brother, Vernie Johnson; son, Denis Neal; and wife, Wilma Johnson.
Survivors include a son, Dennis B. Wright and wife, Lillian; four grandchildren, Melanie Brandon and husband, Mark, Wendel Wright and wife, Carol, Alyssa Barnes and husband, Jamie, and John (Jade) Wright and wife, Pepe; one great-grandson, Garrett Barnes; and a nephew, Billy Paul Sharp and wife, Carol. Memorials may be directed to the Craig Presbyterian Church in Craig.



Krutz, Melvin -

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 16,2006, at the First Lutheran Church in Rock Port, Missouri, for Melvin Harold Krutz of Nebraska City, Nebraska. Interment was made at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Craig, Missouri, under the direction of Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port. Rev. Rick Danforth officiated.
Melvin Harold Krutz, the son of Emil Rudolph and Lena (Ideker) Krutz, was born June 9,1921, at Corning, Missouri. He attended Corning High School, where he graduated in 1940. On September 22,1940, Melvin was united in marriage to Cozette Nauman at the home of Cozette's parents in Corning. They made their home in Corning, where they lived and farmed their entire married life. They enjoyed traveling, and for 25 years prior to Cozette's death, spent six months out of each year in Hawaii. Melvin's greatest love was his family, with whom he spent as much time as possible. He also enjoyed animals and had numerous kinds on the farm at all times.
Melvin was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Corning, prior to transferring his membership to First Lutheran Church of Rock Port. He also held a dual membership with the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Maui, Hawaii, where he attended during the winter months.
Cozette passed away in February, 2002. Melvin passed away on Thursday, January 12, 2006, at the Ambassador Care Center, Nebraska City, Nebraska, at the age of 84.
Survivors include two daughters, Judith Ann Middleton, Kearney, Nebraska, and Melva Linville, Kansas City, Missouri; a son, Harold Krutz, Fairfax, Missouri; seven grandchildren, James Melvin Middleton, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Joseph Gaines Middleton, Golden, Colorado, and Mary Margaret Ducoulormbier and Annette Silvers, both of Kansas City, and Michael Krutz, Bryan Krutz and Eric Krutz, all of Fairfax: eight great-grandchildren, James Francis Middleton, Mary Christina Middleton, Tatum Gautier Middleton, Katie Shaul, Madison Doucolormbier, Olivia Silvers. Jayden Krutz and Brogan Krutz; sister and brother-in-law, Wilma and Phillip Rand­all, Rock Port; and sister-in-law, Mary Lou Nauman, Rock Port; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, Cozette, and his parents. Memorials may be directed to the First Lutheran Church of Rock Port or the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.


LaRue, Dwight "Moody" -

Mr. and Mrs. Hal Davis of Fairfax received word recently of the death of Moody LaRue of Las Vegas, Nev.
Dwight (Moody) LaRue was born Dec. 27, 1914 in Fairfax the son of Florabet Miller and Van LaRue and died at a hospital in Las Vegas Oct. 2,1987.
He was reared by his grandmother in Fairfax where he attended school and graduated with the class of 1934. He was an employee of the Livermore Laboratory testing sight and had retired and had made many trips back to Fairfax in the past several years, attending the alumni banquets and visiting at the Davis home. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
He was hospitalized and was undergoing triple heart by pass surgery when he died.
The body was cremated and the remains were brought to the Walkup's Grove Cemetery, near Fairfax for burial.


Lewis, Eathel Mae Vaughn

Eathel Mae, daughter of Walter and Ruby Vanderpool Vaughn was born Aug. 15,1916 at Spickard, Mo. and died at her home west of Fairfax May 24, 1996 at the age of 79 years, 9 months and 9 days.
Eathel graduated from Spickard High School. On Dec. 31, 1938 she became the wife of Kermit E. Lewis. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis spent the rest of their lives living in Atchison county. She was a member of the Fairfax Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kermit in 1984; two granddaughters, Rhonda Lynn Baker in 1985 and Jerrie Ann Strough Morton in 1995.
She is survived by three sons: Larry Lewis, Fairfax; Jim Lewis, Mick Lewis, Rock Port; four daughters: Joyce Strough, Skidmore; Shilah Baker, Fairfax; Janice McNaughton, Tarkio; Twyilla Gibbons, Westboro; 18 grand­children and 10 great grandchildren.
Services were held at the Fairfax Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Collins in charge on May 28. Interment was in Eng­lish Grove Cemetery, west of Fairfax.
Pallbearers were James Lewis, Randy Baker, Jeremy Lewis, Mike Lewis, Shane McNaughton, Tyson Gibbons. Honorary pallbearers were Cody Stoner, Slade McNaughton, Cory Hill, Trayton Lewis, Steve Gibbons.
Mrs. Dorothy Grubb and Mrs. Marilyn Reed were in charge of music, and they accompanied Mrs.  Betty Wennihan, vocalist.

 

Lininger, Don G. -

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at the United Methodist Church in Rock Port, Missouri, for Don G. Lininger, Rock Port. Rev. Ralph Clark officiated. Interment was made in English Grove Cemetery in Fairfax, under the direction of Chamberlain Funeral Home, Rock Port.
Don George Lininger, age 87, passed away on Sunday morning, March 11. He was born in Fairfax, on March 11, 1914. He was one of six children born to Ortel and Edna (Prettyman) Lininger. Don graduated from Tarkio High School in Tarkio, Missouri. On November 26, 1938, he married Virginia Hope Erwin in Los Angeles, California. Don and Gid became the parents of three children.
During the war years, Don worked in the shipyards in California. Then he worked for plumbing and heating companies in California and South Dakota. The Liningers moved to Rock Port in 1950, and Don started Rock Port Plumbing. Virginia passed away in 1987.
Don was an active member of the Rock Port community. He served on the original pool board, even doing some of the plumbing for construction of the pool. Don was instrumental in starting the swim team. He served on the city council in the early 1960's. Don was a member of the Rock Port Volunteer Fire Department for 27 years and served as chief from 1976 until 1982. He enjoyed all the children in the community.
Don worked with the chain gang and ran the electronic score board at football games for 36 years. He also helped with track meets and other community events. Don loved fishing and woodworking, and each of his grandchildren have special wood gifts, fish stories and memories of time shared with their grandpa.

Survivors include his children, Carole Johnson, Savannah, Missouri, and Steve and Alan Lininger, both of Rock Port; one brother, Loren Lininger, Rock Port; one sister, Verona Durfee, Northridge, California; seven grandchildren, Matthew and Christopher Johnson, Kenneth and Wade Lininger, Theresa Lee and Phillip and Amy Lininger; and five great-grandchildren, Don, Cody and Nolan Lininger, Colton and Dylan Lee.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Dale and Kenneth; and one sister, Evelyn Fetzer. Memorials may be directed to the Rock Port Volunteer Fire Department or the Fairfax Community Hospital the children in the community.

 

Litherbury, Audrey "Tot" -

Audrey "Tot" Litherbury was born Jan. 29,1903 on a farm northeast of Fairfax, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Litherbury and died at the Community Hospital, Fairfax, June 1, 1987 at the age of 84 years, 4 months and 2 days. .
She attended Long Branch school and remained on the farm her lifetime, helping care for her father, mother and brother, Gerald.
Her parents and brother preceded her in death.
She was a member of the Fairfax United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
Graveside services and burial were held Wednesday morning at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery near Fairfax.

 

Livengood, Dale E. -

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, August 10, 2001, at the United Methodist Church in Tarkio, Missouri, for Dale E. Livengood of Tarkio. Pastor James Shrieves officiated. Interment was made in Tarkio Home Cemetery in Tarkio with a graveside military flag folding ceremony conducted under the auspices of the Allen Schiffern American Legion Post #199 of Tarkio. Services were under the direction of David Funeral Home of Tarkio.
Dale Eurod Livengood, age 64, passed away Tuesday, August 7, 2001, at Heartland East Hospital in St. Joseph, Missouri. He was born on October 2, 1936, at College Springs, Iowa, to Marjorie E. (Dow) and Eurod O. Livengood.
After graduating from Elmo High School in Elmo, Missouri, in 1954, Dale enlisted in the United States Army in December of 1954. He took his basic training at Fort Bliss, Texas, at El Paso and, after several moves in the states, spent the last 28 months of his tour of duty in Asmara, Ethiopia. He arrived home in September of 1957 and enrolled at Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville.
On November 22, 1959, Dale married Joyce Elaine Campbell at the United Methodist Church in Elmo. Dale continued with his college, living and working in Maryville, and helping truck with his dad. He graduated from college in December, 1961, and accepted a job with Farmers Home Administration in St. Louis, Missouri, where he and Joyce moved in January of that year.

The Livengoods became the parents of five children, Nina Gail, Lacretia Elaine, Craig Dale, Eric Olin and Brent Alan. They resided in St. Louis for six years. Being from the country area, they kept hoping to return to the northwest Missouri area. Dale had been moonlighting in the tax business in the St. Louis area for some time, so when an accounting and tax business in Tarkio became available, he pur­chased the business in June of 1969 and moved his family to Tarkio in August of 1969.
Dale became a tremendous supporter of Tarkio and was active in numerous civic organizations. He was a member of the Allen Schiffern American Legion Post #199 of Tarkio, a charter member of the Tarkio Lions Club, and was a former member of the Tarkio Rotary Club, Tarkio School Board and the Tarkio Water Board. For many years, he was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church of Tarkio.
Survivors include: wife, Joyce, of the home in Tarkio; two daughters, Nina Gail Hedrick and son-in-law, Curtis, of Tarkio, and Lacretia Elaine Livengood, Smithville, Missouri; three sons, Craig Dale Livengood and daughter-in-law, Diane, Eric Olin Livengood and daughter-in-law, Cindy, and Brent Alan Livengood, all of Tarkio; five grandchildren, Jill, Cara, Kyle, Chancelee and Elizabeth; three sisters, Marie Twaddle, Maryville, Missouri, Marjorie Smith and husband, Zeke, of Elmo, Missouri, and Connie Marriott and husband, Gary, of Clarinda, Iowa.

Preceding Dale in death besides his parents were one brother, Lynn (Curley) Liven­good; and one brother-in-law, Bruce Twaddle. Memorials may be directed to the United Methodist Church in Tarkio.

 

 

Mackey, William D. -

Memorial graveside services and inurnment were held on Monday, January 22, 2001, at the Hamburg Cemetery, Hamburg, Iowa, for William D. Mackey, Rock Port, Missouri, formerly of Fairfax. Rev. Kathleen Schmidtke officiated. A flag presentation was conducted by the Allen Schiffein American Legion Post #199 of Tarkio, Missouri. The services were under the direction of Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio, Missouri.
William D. Mackey, age 73, passed away on Friday, January 19, 2001. William, the son of William Joseph and Clara Gertrude (Rookstool) Mackey, was born on May 10,1927, in Tabor, Iowa. He attended the Hamburg Public Schools and then entered the United States Army in 1944. Bill served his country during and after World War II in Germany, receiving his honorable discharge in November of 1949.
On October 15, 1947, Bill was united in marriage to Doris Evelyn Thompson at Hiawatha, Kansas. Since the 1950's, they had made their home in the Atchison County, Missouri, area. Bill farmed and held various jobs before retiring from the Atchison County Road Maintenance Department in 1986. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and watching television.
Bill is survived by his wife, D. Evelyn, Fairfax; one daughter, Linda Butcher and son-in-law, Donald, St. Joseph, Missouri; two sons, Thomas Mackey and daughter-in-law, Sandra, and Bill Mackey and daughter-in-law, Beth, all of Fairfax; three grandchildren, Todd Butcher, Shauna Butcher Bothum and Shannon Mackey Jobes; and one great­grandchild, Hayley Bothum.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harold Handley; and two sisters, Eula (Mickey) Tyler and Virginia Coffee. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.


 

Martin, Margaret F. Burge -

Margaret F. Martin, Fairfax, Missouri, passed away March 29, 2012, at the age of 89 years, eight months, two days. She was born July 27, 1922, in Craig, Missouri, the daughter of Lester and Normal (Harper) Burge.
She attended school in Craig, and on February 1, 1941, Margaret became the wife of Dale A. Martin. Dale and Margaret worked for several farmers in the Craig and Fairfax area. In 1962, they moved into the town of Fairfax, where they spent the rest of their lives. Dale preceded Margaret in death on July 3, 1991.
Margaret worked at Fairfax Laundry for over 20 years until that business closed. After her retirement she was caregiver for several older people in the Fairfax community. Margaret was a member of the Milton Club and the Fairfax Christian Church.
In addition to her parents and husband, Margaret was preceded in death by her son, Dale A. Martin, Jr., on July 5, 2004; by two brothers: Ottman Burge and L.D. Burge; and by three sisters: Melissa Sommers, Josephine Reeves, and Cora Rollins.

She is survived by brothers: Russell Burge and wife Freda of Eagle Point, Oregon; Jay Burge and wife Jo of Fairfax; and Lelan Burge and wife Betsy of Hamburg, Iowa; and one sister, Lucille Woodall and husband Jack of Shenandoah, Iowa. Margaret is also survived by two grandsons: John Martin of Glasgow, Missouri, and Mark Martin of Portland, Oregon; by two step-grand­children: John Brown and Amy Brown, both of Fairfax; and by one great-grandchild and three step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her family, Margaret is also survived by her very special friend, Ray Kent of Mound City, Missouri, and Mr Kent's three daughters, who had been Margaret's caregivers.

Services were held April 3, 2012, at the Fairfax Christian Church, conducted by Rev. Adam Magill. Burial was at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Craig, Missouri. Memorials may be directed to Alzheimer's Association for Alzheimer's Disease Research. Services were under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax

 

McCartney, Eugene M. -

Eugene M. McCartney was born March 6,1905 at Westboro, the son of Earnest and Hattie Halliday McCartney and died at the Bethesda Care Center in Tarkio Oct. 3, 1993 at the age of 88 years, 6 months and 27 days.
Most of his childhood was spent in the West­boro area until the family homesteaded at the Paul McCartney farm southeast of Tarkio. Eugene attended Westboro school until the second grade, then Oak Grove Rural School, Fairfax High School, and Tarkio College.
He married Anna Umbarger on May 26, 1929. They established their home on the hill east of his folks' home southeast of Tarkio. They were parents of two sons and one daughter, Robert,    Donald and
Dorothy.
In 1956 the family moved to Tarkio, where he operated the Carson Filling Station and Tank Wagon Service until selling it to the Atchison County Coop. He then resumed farming with his son, Don, until 1972 when he retired. Anna died Dec. 8,1982.
On July 25, 1983 he married Alice Crockett Jones, and they made their home in Tarkio.
He was a member of the Fairfax United Methodist Church, the Fairfax Kiwanis Club, the Fairfax Methodist Men's Club.
He was preceded in death by one grandson, Jeff; and one brother, Paul McCartney.
Survivors include his wife, Alice, of the home in Tarkio; two sons, Robert McCartney, Bella Vista, AZ; Donald McCartney, Tulsa, OK; and one daughter, Dorothy Jean Phillips, Downers Grove, IL; four step­sons and one stepdaughter: Albert L. Jones, Mound City; Marvin Jones, Tarkio; Navy Captain Eugene Jones, Naples, Italy; Donald Jones, Colorado City, TX; Nancy Thomson, Maryville; 7 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday morning at the Fairfax United Method­ist Church conducted by Rev. Sharon Lodygowski. Interment was in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax.
Mrs. Bob Sefrit was in charge of music.
Pallbearers were Brad Phillips, Mike McCartney, Mark McCartney, Marvin McCartney, Leonard McEnaney, Jim Massing.

 

Meyerkorth, Charlene Hope Burke -

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 15, 2001, for Charlene Hope Meyerkorth, Rock Port, Missouri. Pastor Richard Pearson officiated. Interment was made in Hunter Cemetery, Rock Port, under the direction of Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port.

Charlene Hope Meyerkorth, age 77, passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2001, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port. Charlene was born on November 3, 1923, on a farm north of Rock Port, the daughter of Hal C. and Mabel L. (Greer) Burke. She received her early education in theLliberty Country School near her home and, in 1941, graduated from Rock Port High School in Rock Port.

On June 1, 1941, Charlene was united in marriage to Dean Meyerkorth at her family's home where she was born and reared and where her parents were also married. They made their home and farmed on the Meyerkorth family farm west of Phelps City, Missouri. In 1952, they moved to their farm in the Langdon community. They were the parents of one son, Stephen.
Charlene was a wonderful and busy wife, mother and homemaker. She had worked at the Langdon Grocery Store and also at the Langdon Post Office. Charlene was a member of the St. Peter's Lutheran Church and the Church Ladies of St. Peter's. She loved working with the youth in the Langdon Lutheran League and also serving as a 4-H leader.
For many years, Charlene worked with the alumni banquet and had held every office in the organization. For over 50 years, she was a member of the Templeton Homemakers Club. Since the merger of St. Peter's, she had been a member of the First Lutheran Church of Rock Port. Dean passed away February 17, 1982. Charlene continued to live on the farm until moving to Rock Port in 1993.
Charlene is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen D. and Ona Meyerkorth, College Station, Texas; and two sisters and brother-in-laws, Mildred and Gene Thomson, Fairfax, and Hallie and Gene Blackman, Shenandoah, Iowa.
Charlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dean; a brother, George Burke; a sister, Doris Parker; and an infant sister, Ellen Burke. Memorials may be directed to the First Lutheran Church, Rock Port, WELCA, Lutheran Youth or Hunter Cemetery.

 

 

Miller, Donald "Corky" -

Funeral services were held at 10:00 Wednesday morning at the Stamey Lindsey Chapel in St Joseph for Donald (Corky) Miller. He passed away Saturday, May 30, at the Veterans Hospital, at the age of 56 after a lengthy illness.
He farmed in this area in the 1950's and 60's and later moved to St Joseph and worked for the St Joseph School District for 17 years.
Surviving are his wife, former Frances Edwards; a daughter, Diana Root of St Joseph; a son, Douglas, of the home; and two grandchildren. His mother Nettie Miller, St Joseph; two sisters, Juel Bowman, Fairfax; and Pauline Petty, St Joseph. Nieces and nephews.
Burial was at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Oregon, Mo.

 

Moses, Jerry D. -

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2001, at the Baptist Church in Fairfax, for Jerry D. Moses, Fairfax. Rev. Steve Suttill officiated. Interment was made in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax, under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax.
Jerry D. Moses, age 65, passed away on Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at Community Hospital Association in Fairfax. Jerry was born on May 6, 1936, in Braddyville, Iowa, to Fred and Delia Moses. He grew up in rural Westboro, Missouri, and graduated in 1955 from Westboro Schools.
Jerry first worked at the bin sites in Tarkio, Missouri. He then farmed for Charles Scarlett. From there he went to work for Dale Township grading roads. He then worked at Missouri Beef Packers/Excel Corporation, where he worked until the closing of the plant. Later he worked for MFA for three years before going to the City of Fairfax where he was currently employed.
Survivors include his wife Janet, of the home; two sons, Ricky Moses and wife, Nada, Davie, Florida, and Mike Moses and wife, Karen, Independence, Missouri; two daughters, Debra Bolton, Oakland Park, Florida, and Cindy Sons and husband, Rick, of Fairfax; his mother, Delia Moses, Elmo, Missouri; one brother, Larry and wife, Linda, Fairfax; four sisters, Freda Webber and husband, Mick, Shenandoah, Iowa, Bonnie Moses, Tarkio, Carol Bargman and husband, Bill, Lee's Summit, Missouri, and Joy Beemer and husband, Denny, Gravity, Iowa; and 11 grandchildren.

Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Fred Moses; a son, Allan Moses; a sister, Ruth Moses; and a nephew, Mark Bargman

 

Norton, Charles T.

Charles T. Norton, Fairfax, Missouri, passed away May 30, 2012, at the age of 80 years, 11 months, five days. He was born on a farm in the Fairfax community on June 25, 1931, the oldest son of Ralph and Maude (Thompson) Norton. Charles was raised in Fairfax, attended school there, and graduated from high school in 1949. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
On November 2, 1952, Charles was united in marriage to Lila Hamman. After Charles was discharged from the Army he and Lila returned to Fairfax and established their home. He was employed by the Fairfax Forum from 1954 until 1978 when he purchased Sims Printing Company. Charles retired from the printing business in 2006.
During his years in Fairfax, Charles was active in his church and in community affairs. These activities include: elder, trustee, and former treasurer of the Fairfax Presbyterian Church, Fairfax Kiwanis Club (past president), former member of the Fairfax City Council, former member of the Fairfax R-III Board of Education (past president), and member of John Richards Post #284 American Legion.

Charles is survived by his wife, Lila, of the home; by daughters, Susan Gomel and her husband Harold of Fairfax, and Janice Carpenter and her husband Chuck of Rock Port; and by six grandchildren: Dustin Carpenter, M.D., David Gomel, Jason Carpenter, Aaron Carpenter, Ashley Oelze, and Molly Carpenter. He is also survived by a brother, Gerald Norton and wife Carol of Clinton, Missouri, and two sisters: Margaret Root of Fremont, Nebraska, and Sharon Abbott and husband Bill of Joplin, Missouri.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, by an infant daughter, Cynthia Sue, and by an infant brother.
Graveside services and burial were held Sunday, June 3, 2012, at the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax, conducted by Rev. John Welch. Memorials may be directed to the Fairfax Kiwanis Club or to the First Presbyterian Church of Fairfax. Services were under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax.

 

O'Riley, William James "Bill" -

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 13, 2001, at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Maryville, Missouri, for William James "Bill" O'Riley, Maryville. Father Chuck Tobin officiated. Interment was made in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Maryville, under the direction of Price Funeral Home, Maryville.
William James "Bill" O'Riley; age 80, passed away on Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at his home in Maryville. He was born on August 15, 1920, in Skidmore, Missouri, to Margaret E. (Linville) and Francis P. O'Riley.
Bill was a 1938 graduate of Skidmore High School, Skidmore, and served in the U.S. Navy. On September 23,1946, he was united in marriage to Betty "Jane" Haynes in Maryville. Bill was a retired farmer and was a member of the St. Gregory's Parish in Maryville.
Survivors include his wife, Jane, of the home; two brothers, Robert O'Riley, Graham, Missouri, and Paul O'Riley, Fairfax; three sisters, Mary Growney, Maryville, Margaret Merrigan, Conception, Missouri, and Pat Briles, Creston, Iowa; nieces; and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Philip O'Riley and Fred O'Riley. Memorials may be directed to SSM Hospice of Northwest Missouri.


Oswald, Jerlyn "Maxine" Martin -

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 1, 2001, at the Fairfax Presbyterian Church for Jerlyn Maxine Oswald, Fairfax. Rev. Chester T. Mason officiated. Interment was made in English Grove Cemetery, Fairfax, under the direction of Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio, Missouri.
Jerlyn Maxine (Martin) Oswald, age 77, passed away on Thursday, June 28, 2001, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha. Nebraska. Maxine the daughter of Wayne and Cleo (Price) Martin, was born on July 1, 1923, in Rock Port, Missouri. She attended and graduated from the Fairfax Schools in Fairfax.
On October 23, 1943, Maxine was united in marriage to Maurice "Bill" Oswald at Elizabethtown. Kentucky. While Bill was serving in World War II. Maxine was employed in Kansas City, MO. as a telephone operator. After the war, they moved to the Fairfax area and engaged in farming and contin­ued to farm their remaining years. Bill passed away on October 4, 1989.
Maxine is survived by two daughters, Sharon Johnson and husband, Sam, Edmond. Okla­homa, and Joy Oswald and Wayne Hutton, Naples, Florida: : grandsons, Greg Johnson. Olathe, Kansas, and Jeff Johnson, Neosho, Missouri; four great-grandchildren, Megan and Nicholas Johnson and Megan and Lauren Hicks; one sister, Allene Martin, St. Joseph, Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband. Bill: her parents; and one son. Billy Oswald. Memorials may be directed to the Maxine Oswald Memorial Fund.

 

Palm, Irvin Herman -

FuneraL services were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at Minter Funeral Chapel in Rock Port, Missouri, for Irvin vHerman Palm, Rock Port. Pastor David Obersole officiated. Internment was made in Hunter Cemetery, Rock Port, under the direction of Minter Funeral Chapel.
Irvin Herman Palm, age 83, passed away on Friday, January 19, 2001, at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port. Irvin was born on January 25, 1917, to Gustav and Augusta (Erdman) Palm, in Langdon, MO. He attended the Benton Center Country School in the Langdon area. Irvin farmed on the Palm family farm south of Langdon. In 1993, he moved to his present home northwest of Rock Port.
Irvin was a member of the former St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Langdon, where he was baptized in his youth. Irvin enjoyed being busy outdoors, gardening and raising livestock and chickens. He also enjoyed watching television, listening to the scanner and visiting about his life on their family farm.
Irvin is survived by one brother, Arnold Palm, Rock Port; one sister, Mildred Windhorst, and brother-in-law, Willie, Fairfax; and numerous nieces and nephews. Irvin was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Gertrude Hague, Lou Ella Palm and infant sister, Evelyn; and one brother, Herbert Palm. Memorials may be directed to the Irvin Palm Memorial, Rock Port.

 

Patterson, Charlotte "Rebecca" -

Charlotte Rebecca Patterson, daughter of Ray and Ruth Patterson, was born in Maryville Nov. 15, 1948 and died at Bethesda Care Center in Tarkio Sept. 29, 1993 at the age of 44 years, 10 months and 14 days.
She had lived most of her life in Fairfax, and the past 20 years had made her home at the health care center. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include a brother, Robert E. Patterson   of  Rock Port; aunts and uncle, Lori, Cathy and Robert Patterson.
Graveside services and burial was held Saturday morning, Oct. 2 at the Walkup's Grove Cemetery, near Fairfax, conducted by Rev. Sharon Lodygowski.
Memorials may be given to the Becky Patterson Memorial Fund, c/o Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax.

 

Pearce, Edith Josephine -

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at the Fairfax Christian Church, Fairfax, MO, for Edith Josephine Pearce of Tarkio. Reverend Allen Bash and Reverend Matthew Teel officiated. Interment was made in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax.

Edith Josephine Pearce, 99, passed away at Northview Manor in Tarkio on Sunday, March 11, 2001. Edith Josephine Pearce, daughter of Dr. William H. and Ida Bell (Holly) Fauver, was born February 13, 1902, in Tarkio, Missouri. She attended the Tarkio and Fairfax, Mis­souri, schools. Following her schooling, she worked at the Schooler Dry Goods in Fairfax and also drove horse and buggy and then Model T for her father who was a veterinarian.
On April 23, 1924, Edith was united in marriage to Richard Pearce in St. Joseph, Missouri. They resided in Fairfax where she worked as a telephone operator and later became a postal clerk, retiring in 1968. Mr. Pearce passed away November 6, 1981. Edith was a very devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose family was the love of her life. She especially took pride in her granddaughters and great-grandsons. Springtime was her favorite time of the year and she always challenged her family as to whom would see the first robin. Edith was also a devoted member of the Fairfax Christian Church and the Christian Women's Fellowship. She always took care of ordering flowers for the sick or deceased members of the church. Socially, Edith enjoyed her memberships in other organizations including the Order of the Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, Community Hospital Auxiliary, the F.A.B. Bridge Club, Pot Luck Club and the Garden Club.
On February 13 of this year, Edith enjoyed celebrating her 99th birthday with her family. She said the next morning that she had a good time, but it didn't last long enough.

Prior to entering the nursing home, Edith made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Sidney and Gary. Due to ill health, Edith entered the Northview Manor in Tarkio, Missouri, on September 7, 1985.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Sidney Carole and Gary Cooper, of Tarkio; son, Richard Lee Pearce, Fairfax; two granddaughters and husbands, Jayne Roseann and Keith Nemyer of Fairfax and Stacy Carole and Clint Hughes of Rock Port, Missouri; three great-grandsons, Keison and Keifer Nemyer of Fairfax, and Jase Hughes of Rock Port. Besides her parents and husband, Rich­ard, Edith was preceded in death by sister, Allie Carmichael, and two brothers, William and Orb Fauver. Memorials may be directed to the Fairfax Christian Church.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, February 18, 2004, at the Chamberlain Funeral Home in Mound City, Missouri, for Darlene Peters, Lee's Summit, Missouri. Interment was made in Hunter Cemetery, Rock Port, Missouri, under the direction of Chamberlain Funeral Home, Mound City.
Darlene Peters, age 75, passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2004, at a Lee's Summit care center. She was born in Corning, Missouri, and graduated from Fairfax High School. She was preceded in death by her parents, Irvin G. and Anna D. (Rebel) Peters and a sister, Katherine Peters.
She is survived by her son, Robert W. "Bob" Peters, Urich, Missouri; a daughter, Angela E. "Angie" Dauer, Lee's Summit; brothers, Ralph D. Peters, Niceville, Florida, and M. Lee Peters, Corning; sister, Dorothy A. "Dottie" Cotton, Forest City, Missouri; and two granddaughters. Memorials may be directed to John Knox Village Hospice Care Program.

 

Peters, Gina Diane Bottorff -

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2004, at the Church of the Nazarene in Craig, Missouri, for Gina Diane Peters, Craig. Rev. Rob Self officiated. Interment was made in Hunter Cemetery, Rock Port, Missouri, under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Craig.
Gina, age 25 passed away on Wednesday, July 28,2004. She was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, on May 14, 1979. Gina was the daughter of Michael and Cheri (Borders) Bottorff. Gina grew up in northwest Missouri. She received much of her schooling in Maysville, Missouri, but graduated from Oregon High School in 1997. After high school she attended Vatterott College in St. Joseph for two years and then was employed by Klein Motors for two years.
On August 1, 2000, Gina became the wife of Russell Peters. Gina and Russell lived in Dodge City, Kansas, for three years before returning to Craig. They have been residents of Craig for the past one and one-half years.
Gina is survived by her husband, Russell, a daughter, Kyrstin Nikole, and a son, Dalton Alan, all of the home. She is also survived by her father, Michael Bottorff, St. Joseph; her mother, Cheri White, Craig; her paternal grandmother, Geneva Bottorff, St. Joseph; and by three brothers, Eric Bottorff, Cameron, Missouri, and Justin White and Brent White, both of Craig. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Mildred and Dillard Borders; and her paternal grandfather, Gerald Bottorff. Gina and her family had attended the Craig Church of the Nazarene.

 

Phelps, Ralph Lee - Ralph Lee Phelps, 71, a lifetime resident of Rock Port, Missouri, passed away in the early hours of the morning on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Bryan LGH Medical Center East in Lincoln, Nebraska after a brief illness. Ralph, the son of Walter and Lillie (Oswald) Phelps was born June 3, 1945 in Maryville, Missouri. After graduating from Rock Port High School in 1964, Ralph entered the United States Air National Guard and served his country during the Vietnam Era.

On May 25, 1968, Ralph was united in marriage to Janice Kay Randall at the Christian Church in Craig, Missouri. They made their home in the Atchison County area during their 48 years of marriage.

Ralph was an exceptional finish carpenter and built and remodeled homes throughout Atchison and Holt Counties. He also enjoyed farming throughout his life. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Rock Port and served there in numerous capacities including as a Board Trustee and Administrative Board member-at-large. He was also a member of the Ralph Greer American Legion Post #49, Rock Port, and actively served his community as a member of the Phelps City Dyke and Drainage Board and the Fair Oaks Senior Housing Board.

Ralph will be deeply missed and remembered most of all as a loving husband, brother and uncle, and kind friend to all who knew him. Ralph held a special place in his nieces and nephews hearts who all adored him. Ralph especially enjoyed having coffee throughout the week with friends at the "Wood's Shed" where he will be fondly remembered.

Besides his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by a half-sister, Dorothy Mahan. Survivors include his devoted wife, Janice Phelps, Rock Port; brother, John (Linda) Phelps, Rock Port; nieces, Joni Phelps, Colorado Springs, CO and Lisa (Phelps) Freborg and her husband, Scott; great-nephews, Myles and Jordan (Katie) Freborg, as well as many other beloved brothers' and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and their feline "girls" Prissy and Shadow.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2001, at the Presbyterian Church in Fairfax, for Mildred Lorene Price, Tarkio, Missouri, formerly of Fairfax. Rev. Jack Yates and Rev. Chet Mason officiated. Interment was made in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax, under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax.
Mildred Lorene Price, age 84, passed away Thursday, January 11, 2001, at Community Hospital in Fairfax. Mildred was born in Maitland, Missouri, on April 24, 1916. She was one of a family of 10 children born to David G. and Myrtle A. Brickey. She grew up in Mound City, Missouri, and attended school there. On February 7, 1934, Mildred became the wife of D.A. Price of the Fairfax community. She has been a resident of Fairfax since that time, until this past December when she moved to Tarkio. Mildred worked at Community Hospital in Fairfax for 31 years, starting as a nurses' aide and retiring as a surgery tech.
She was a member and past deacon of the Fairfax Presbyterian Church, a former member of the Tamasha Club and the T.E.C. Club.
Mildred is survived by three daughters, Delores, and husband, Lewis Shipley, North Platte, Nebraska, Wanda, and husband, Donald Thaden, Waco, Texas, and Sharon, and husband, Charley Jones, Tarkio; a brother, Earl Brickey, San Diego, California; four sisters, Verlene Stoddard and Geraldine Duncan, Auburn, Nebraska, Helen South, Sapulpa, Oklahoma, and Beverly Gorbin, Fulton, Missouri; 11 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and two "step great-great-grandchildren.

Betty is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Chapman, Lenexa, Kansas; two sons, Mike McGowan, Overland Park, Kansas, and Pat McGowan, Shawnee; three sisters, Lois Coats, Edwardsville, Kansas, Sally Strough, Kansas City, Missouri, and Edith Hamilton, Tarkio, Missouri; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, James M. McGowan in 1962; her second husband, Lowell D. Reiley in 1979; a son, Jimmy McGowan; a sister, Margie Umbarger; and her parents, Thomas and Basha Fries.

 

Rhoades, Helen Virginia VanGundy -

Helen Virginia (Mrs. Ottman) Rhoades was born Dec. 31, 1916 the daughter of Clemon O. and Lucille Van Gundy, and died Sept. 14, 1993. Funeral services and burial was held Sept. 18 at Chapel of Chimes Mortuary in Hayword, CA.
Survivors include one brother and two sisters: Billy Gordon Van Gundy of Fairfax; B. Frances Millsap and Dorothy Gene Bradley; daughter, Vickye Lou Grimes of Fayetteville, AK and one son, Richard Dean Rhoades of Livermore, CA

 

Rhoades, Jasper Dee -

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 16, 2004, at Schooler Funeral Home in Fairfax, for Jasper Dee Rhoades, Mound City, Missouri. Rev. Steve Suttill officiated. Interment was made in English Grove Cemetery, Fairfax, under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax.
Jasper, age 70, passed away on Monday, July 12, 2004. He was born in rural Atchison County on November 29,1933. He was the son of Albert and Susie (Bettinger) Rhoades. He grew up in the area around Corning and Nishnabotna, Missouri, and attended school in Nishnabotna. As a young man, he began working for the Burlington Northern Railroad. Jasper retired from the railroad in 1979 due to failing health.
He was married to Juanita M. "Jerry" Anderson. She preceded him in death on November 30, 1996. Even though Jasper and Jerry had no children of their own, they befriended many young people in the Corning and Craig communities and they enjoyed helping them. Jasper also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He had attended the Countryside Baptist Church in Corning.

He is survived by two brothers, Albert Rhoades and Edward Rhoades, both of Atlantic, Iowa; and by sisters, Leola Bartlett and Martha Dixon, both of Rock Port, Missouri, Bertha Fudge, Atlantic, Iowa, and Elfa Kunzler of Ravenwood, Missouri. Jasper is also survived by several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in dea:th by two sisters, Betty Rhoades and Faye Walker. Jasper had resided at Tiffany Heights Care Center in Mound City, Missouri, for the past ten years where he had received excellent care from the personnel and staff.

 

Riley, William Lewis -

William Lewis Riley was born April 18, 1914, in Brawley, Calif., the son of Thomas P. and Malinda Sowers Riley. He passed away at Community Hospital in Fairfax, on May 20, 1987, at the age of 73 years.
He came to Missouri at an early age and attended Westboro country schools and then farmed in the Tarkio area.
On Sept 12, 1936, he was united in marriage to Georgia Brown in Maryville. Making their home in Tarkio, he went into partnership with Fred Martin in the heavy equipment and construction business. In the early 1950's, they moved to south Missouri and operated a dairy farm. During 1956 they returned to Tarkio where he was employed by Levings Construction Co. They moved to Westboro in 1967. He continued working for Levings until his retirement in 1976. He worked a few years at the Westboro Elevator.
He was a member of the Westboro United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Georgia, of the home in Westboro; 3 daughters; Karen Irene Lawson, Norfolk, Neb., Kerrey Sue Million, Tarkio, and Pamala Diana Davis, Fairfax; 4 sons: Billy Edwin Riley, Tarkio, Larry Walter Riley, Yale, Okla., Duane Lee Riley, Schuyler, Neb., and Ricky Lewis Riley, Hyrum, Utah; 19 grandchildren; 2 sisters: Pauline Hicks, Bellflower, Calif., and Helen Faye Slack, West Covina, Calif; 3 brothers: Edwin Riley, Ava; Earl Riley, Fordland; Tom Riley, Boise, Idaho.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 infant sisters.

Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda, Iowa, for David Ripley of Tarkio, Missouri. Reverend Glenn Scott officiated.
David Dale Ripley, age 36, passed away Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Community Hospital Association in Fairfax, Missouri. He was born September 20, 1964, in Clarinda to Joyce Elaine (Davison) and Donald Gene Ripley. He was a 1983 graduate of South Page High School in College Springs, Iowa.
David was united in marriage to Carla Dawn Lawrence in Las Vegas, Nevada, on March 8, 1989. He was an electrician in Kansas City, Missouri, and then served as a contractor for a short time. For the past several years, David had been a farmer and truck driver. His family was most recently honored as "Farm Family of the Year" in the Tarkio area. David's interests included flying the family airplane, boating and spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include: David's wife, Carla, of the home in Tarkio; daughter, Lainey Marie Ripley, of the home; son, Daniel David Ripley, also of the home; father, Gene Ripley and wife, Robin, College Springs; maternal grandmother, Pearl Davison, Clarinda; paternal grandparents, K.W. and Patsy Ripley, College Springs; sister, Jenice Schultheis and husband, Jon, Monterey, California; brothers, Donnie Ripley and wife, Becky, College Springs, Doug Ripley and wife, Janet, Alpharetta, Georgia, Philip Ripley and wife, Heather, College Springs, and Steve Ripley, Omaha, Nebraska; parents-in-law, Marie and Carl Lawrence, Tarkio; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Esther Southard, Fairfax, has received word that her uncle, Lyle Rolofson, age 96, passed away on Friday, August 6,2004, in San Antonio, Texas. Services will be held in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Saturday, August 14. Lyle formerly owned a service garage on the corner of Main Street in Fairfax. He also owned a Studebaker dealership in Tarkio, MO, on Main Street where Summa Pharmacy is currently located.


Schmidt, Alfred E. -

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 16, 2001, at the Craig Church of the Nazarene in Craig, Missouri, for Alfred E. Schmidt, Craig. Rev. Harold Berciunas officiated. Interment was made in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Craig, under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Craig.
Alfred E. Schmidt, age 58, passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2001. He was the oldest son of Edward C. and Martha Pearl (Boyd) Schmidt. He was born on a farm north of Craig, on November 17, 1942. Alfred grew up in the Craig community, first attending Star rural school and then the Craig School, where he graduated from high school in 1960.
Alfred was married to Sue Trauernicht on November 12, 1960. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1961 and served until 1965. After receiving his discharge from the military, Alfred and Sue returned to Craig, and, except for four years when they lived in St. Louis, Missouri, Alfred had lived the rest of his life in this area. He had been a farmer and also a truck driver. Most recently, he was a member of the 139th Airlift Wing, Missouri Air National Guard, in St. Joseph, Missouri, where he was an aircraft maintenance technician.
Alfred was a member of the Craig Church of the Nazarene where he had been a Sunday school teacher, church board member and Sunday school superintendent at various times. He was a member of Story-Hardin Post #164, American Legion, where he was the current chaplain and a past Post Commander. Alfred was also a member of Gideon International.
Survivors include his stepfather, Wade Whitham, and wife, Charlene, Mound City, Missouri; his wife, Sue, of the home in Craig; two sons, Jeffrey D. Schmidt, Harlan, Iowa, and Daniel E. Schmidt, Nehawka, Nebraska; a daughter, Deborah S. DeLong, Harlan; brothers, Charles E. Schmidt, Hines, Oregon, and David O. Schmidt, Craig; stepbrothers, Larry D. Whitham, Gower, Missouri, and Lloyd Whitham, Nevada, Iowa; and seven grandchildren.
Alfred was preceded in death by his father and mother; a sister, Wanda Leigh Schmidt; and a stepsister, Lois F. Schmude. Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.


Steele, John Raymond Sr -

John Raymond Steele, Sr., passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at the age of 90. John was a devoted and loving husband of 65 years, father, father-in-law and grandfather. He was a steadfast man with a gentle spirit who will be remembered for his great intellect, quick wit, and the twinkle in his eye.
John was born and raised in Fairfax, Missouri, and served as a naval officer during WWII.
In his 39-year career as an engineer and head of thermodynamics at McDonnell Douglas, he was a pioneer in space from the ground. He worked in aeronautics to develop and test the F4 and later jets, and in astronautics spanning generations of the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Space Shuttle programs, and other special projects. He loved his work and felt fortunate his career coincided with man's exploration of space.
John is survived by three of his children, John R. Steele, Jr., James M. Steele, and Patricia Ellen Steele (and her husband, David J. Mallof); grandsons, Samuel and Benjamin Steele (sons of John R. Steele, Jr.); his sister, Martha Evans; and numerous nieces and nephews and their children.
His wife, S. Ellen Steele, passed away in 2011. His beloved second son, Joseph E., passed away in 2007.
A funeral service was held Friday, April 13, 2012, at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Dellwood, Missouri, under the direction of Lord Funeral Home, St. Louis, Missouri. Interment was held Monday, April 16, 2012, at the English Grove Cemetery in Fairfax, Missouri, under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax, Missouri.

 

Stenberg, Eunice Louise Davenport -

Eunice Louise Stenberg of Maryville, Missouri, passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2001, at the Nodaway Nursing Home in Maryville. No services were held. Cremation arrangements were by the Price Funeral Home in Maryville. Inurnment was made in the Miriam Cemetery, Maryville.
Eunice Stenberg, age 76, was born on July 24, 1924, in Fairfax, to Fred and Melva May (Humes) Davenport. She had resided in California prior to moving to Maryville in 1992. Eunice was united in marriage to Joseph R. Campbell in 1942 in Craig, Missouri. Joseph passed away in 1943. Then August 7, 1954, she was married to Paul Carl Stenberg in Santa Anna, California. Paul passed away in 1970. Eunice had been a sales clerk in the cosmetic department of a drugstore until retiring. She was of the Methodist faith.
Eunice is survived by two sisters, Kathryn Ernsting, Hemet, California, and Ruth Wennihan, Fairfax; and two brothers, Charles Davenport and Owen Davenport, both of Tarkio, Missouri. Eunice was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; a son, Eric Stenberg; three sisters, Hollis Burke, Pearl Lee and Pauline Davenport; and two brothers, Earl Davenport and Beryl Davenport.

 

Stepp, Margaret Elias

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 9, 2000, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel in Kansas City, Missouri, for Margaret Elias Stepp, McKinney, Texas. Graveside services were also held on Saturday at 3 p.m. at English Grove Cemetery in Fairfax. Arrangements were under the direction of Speaks Suburban Chapel.
Margaret Elias Stepp, age 86, passed away in Plano, Texas, on Monday, December 4,2000. Margaret was born on April 6, 1914, in Liverpool, England, and lived most of her life in the greater Kansas City, MO, area before moving to McKinney this past fall. She had also lived in northwest Missouri, Nebraska, Minnesota and Iowa.
During her adult life, Margaret was a loving mother and homemaker. She was a retired businesswomen and attorney. She was a senior counselor with the Missouri Bar Association and a member of the Grace Community Church of Piano. Formerly, Margaret was a member of the Blue Ridge Boulevard United Methodist Church for many years.
Margaret is survived by her husband of 54 years, William W. Stepp, of the home; one son, Arthur W. Stepp, Independence, Missouri; one daughter and son-in-law, Sheryl D. and George E. Feiser, McKinney; one brother, Dr. David J. Elias, Lake Tapawingo, Missouri; one sister, Constance E. Pique, Palos Verdes Estates, California; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be di­rected to the Grace Community Church Building Fund, 4501 Hedgecoxe Road, Plano, Texas, 75024.

 

Stevens, Wilma Lucille Matlock

A remembrance and memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio for Wilma Lucille Stevens of Tarkio. Pastor Dave Wynn will be officiating with inurnment at Prairie Hill Cemetery in Tarkio. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends from 1 to 1:30 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home. Wilma Lucille Matlock, the daughter of Rufus Matlock and Ethel Bunch Matlock, was born at a farm house in Fairfax, Missouri, on November 1, 1933. She passed away July 3, 2004, at Northview Manor in Tarkio at the age of 70 years. She attended Fairfax grade school and then went on to Tarkio R-I High School to graduate in 1951.
Also in 1951, Wilma was united in marriage to Lee Edward Stevens. After the Korean War, they made their home in Tarkio. They had three children, Linda Kaye of Tarkio, Catherine Lynn of Cincinnati, Iowa, and Russell Allen of Jacksonville, Florida. Wilma also had two other children by a second marriage, Wendy Louise of Cameron, Missouri, and Richard Lee of Centerville, Texas. Wilma and Lee Edward Stevens were reunited in marriage on April 8,2000. This union added Daniel L. Stevens and Kelly S. Butner to her family.

Wilma enjoyed her work as an accountant for many years. She was also active in the March of Dimes campaigns, and 4-H Club, as well as many other civic organizations. Wilma was involved with her church and taught both youth and adult Sunday School classes. She delighted in serving her church, volunteering, as well as keeping active in missions. Wilma enjoyed making quilts, sewing and doing crafts for others. She attended the Tarkio First Christian Church.
Besides her husband and children, Wilma is survived by her mother, Ethel Steinman; seven children; 16 grandchildren; four great­grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her father, Wilma was preceded in death by a son-in-law, David Payton, Jr.; sisters, Jean Vette and Joyce A. Martin; and five infant siblings. Memorials may be directed to the Prairie Hill Cemetery Association in Tarkio.

 

Symanski, Marcia Tyson - Marcia (Tyson) Symanski, 92 Maryville, Missouri died Friday, April 13, 2012, at Golden Living Center in Maryville, Missouri.
She was born December 22, 1919, in rural Atchison County, Missouri. Marcia was the daughter of the late Edwin and Lettie (Walkup) Tyson.
Marcia was a 1936 graduate of Maryville High School and graduated from Northwest Missouri State Teachers College with a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education.
She married John Symanski December 18, 1944 in Troy Kansas. Marcia and John owned and operated the Maryville Florist business for 35 years.
Preceding her in death were husband John (12/16/2006), brothers, Edwin Louis and Turner Walkup Tyson, and a nephew Edwin C.Tyson.
She was a member of St. Oswald's Episcopal Church, rural Fairfax, Missouri.
Surviving are nephews Turner Tyson, Jefferson City, MO, and Wayne Collins, San Jaun Capistrano, CA, and one niece Barbara Finn, Pensacola, FL.
Mrs. Symanski's body has been cremated. Memorial services will be held at 11 AM, Sunday, May 27, at the Walkup Grove Cemetery, rural Fairfax, Missouri.

Thompson, Genevieve Horn -

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, De­cember 23, 2005, at the Church of the Nazarene in Craig, Missouri, for Genevieve Thompson. Interment was made in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Craig. Rev. Rob Self officiated. Services were under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Craig.
Genevieve (Paulson) Thompson was born April 30, 1905, in Craig, Missouri, the daughter of John Wesley Horn and Zua Evelyn Butler. She grew up in Craig and graduated from Craig School. Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents; her son, James C. Paulson; her daughter, Joan Liggott; a granddaughter, Joyce Blount; and two sisters, Clara Belle Brandon and Edna Raiser. Survivors include daughter-in-law, Shirley Paulson, Craig; step­son, John Thompson, and wife, Mickie, of Niles, Michigan; stepdaughter, Barbara Thompson Krause, Omaha, Nebraska; seven grandchildren; seven stepgrand-children; many great-grandchildren; five nieces; and one nephew.
On April 30,1924, she was married to James August Paulson. They lived in Montana, returning to Craig after one year. To this union were born two children, Joan A. and James Craig. Mr. Paulson died in 1937, leaving his family to survive the Great Depression. His wife moved, with her children, into her parents' home, took a course in cosmetology, and bought the only beauty shop in Craig.

During World War II, she took her children to Detroit, where she worked as an inspector in a war plant. Later, she served for a year as a missionary in the Kentucky mountains, then attended school in Chicago to continue preparation for the ministry As a preacher and song evangelist, she traveled in many states. In 1948, she married H.E. (Bill) Thompson and continued her ministry from Falls City, Nebraska, at various times serving as pastor of two churches and supplying pulpits over northeast Kansas, northwest Missouri, and much of Nebraska. From 1963 to 1984, she owned and operated an income tax business.

In 1970, Mr. Thompson died and Mrs. Thompson moved back to Craig where she served as Sunday school teacher from 1972 to present, board member and member of the NWMS Council of the Church of the Nazarene. She was a charter member of that church. In 1937, Genevieve Thompson met the Lord Jesus Christ in a life-changing experience. She loved Him to the end. She leaves a large body of published poetry and prose. Memorials may be directed to the Craig Church of the Nazarene.

 

Thompson, Gertrude Hicks -

Graveside services were held on Friday, June 8, 2001, for Gertrude (Hicks) Thompson, Lindsay, California. Gertrude passed away on Monday, June 4, 2001, from complications due to open heart surgery.
Gertrude was born on December 12, 1933, to Luther and Vera (Davis) Hicks. She was raised in the Atchison and Holt county areas. She also attended schools in Tarkio, Fairfax and Corning, MO.
In 1955, Gertrude moved to Lindsay, where she made her home till her death. She worked in the Lindsay Olive Plant for over 35 years till its closing. Then she worked in the orange packing house for a few years until her retirement.
Survivors include her hus­band, Weldon, of the home; three daughters, Edith Hennessey, Everett, Washington, Debra Cooper, Visallia, California, and Colleen Megia, San Leandora, California; one step daughter, Peggy Slemp, Tarkio, Missouri; five grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and two step great-granddaughters.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Leota Ann in 1999; brothers, Raymond, General, Donald and Roy; and five sisters, Romona, Georgia, Eva, Waunieta and Sylvia.

Gary L. Thomson, age 56, passed away Thursday; January 25, at his home in Tarkio. He was born on August 28, 1944, at Maryville, Missouri. He was the third son of Waldo and Hazel (Stevens) Thomson. Gary grew up on a farm east of Fairfax and attended both rural school and Fairfax School, graduating from Fairfax High School in 1962.
Gary also graduated from the U.S. Trade School in Kansas City; Missouri, where he studied automotive mechanics. He had been employed by car dealerships in St. Joseph, Missouri, and Topeka, Kansas. Gary spent most of his life in Atchison County, Missouri, where he engaged in farming. He also lived near Blockton, Iowa, for a few years.
Gary was a member of the Fairfax Presbyterian Church in Fairfax where he had served as elder and also Sunday School teacher. He had also been a member of the Westboro, Missouri Lions Club. In 1975, Gary married Debra Mather. To this marriage two children were born. Gary and Debra later divorced.

Gary is survived by one son, Matthew Thomson, Tarkio, Mis­souri; one daughter, Tammy Crowley and grandson, Gage Crowley, Tarkio; his father and stepmother, Waldo and Edna Thomson, Fairfax; three brothers, Richard Thomson and Wayne Thomson, both of Tarkio, and Robert Thomson, Fairfax; two stepbrothers, William Close, Marshalltown, Iowa, and Don Close, Big Lake, Minnesota; and two stepsisters, Rose Jones, Lenexa, Kansas, and Ruth Kapetan, Mill Creek, Washington. Memorials may be directed to the Fairfax Presbyterian Church.

 

Tiemeyer, Karen McClurg - Karen (McClurg) Tiemeyer, the daughter of Ivan and Ruth (King) McClurg, was born at home March 4, 1941, in rural Hopkins, Missouri. She attended White Cloud country school and graduated from Hopkins High School, Hopkins, Missouri, in 1959. Karen attended Northwest Missouri State College, Maryville, graduating in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Education.

On July 10, 1966, Karen was united in marriage to Paul Tiemeyer at the First Lutheran Church in Rock Port. They became the parents of two sons, Matthew and Nathan, and made their home in Rock Port their entire married life.

Karen taught business at Rock Port High School for four years and then worked as a bookkeeper at Hippo Melvin Oil Company in Rock Port. She was then employed by Citizen's Bank and Trust, in Rock Port, as a receptionist before being promoted to Assistant Trust Officer. Though Karen was employed outside the home, caring for her family was her greatest commitment and joy.

Karen was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Rock Port, where she served one term on the church council and for several years as church secretary. She also formerly sang with the Sweet Adelines. Karen passed away Sunday, September 25, 2016, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port, at the age of 75.

In addition to her parents, Karen was preceded in death by two brothers, Cleo and Dale McClurg. Survivors include husband, Paul Tiemeyer, Rock Port; two sons, Nathan Tiemeyer and wife, Rachel, Columbia, Missouri, and their children, Jackson, Hannah and Benjamin, and Matthew Tiemeyer and wife, Shelly, Seattle, Washington, and their children, Caelan and Will; sister, Etta Mae Mutti and husband, Fritz, Lee's Summit, Missouri; brothers, Thomas McClurg, St. Joseph, Missouri, and John McClurg and wife, Linda, Maryville, Missouri; brother-in-law, Rich Tiemeyer and wife, Toni Messina, Columbia, Missouri; sister-in-laws, Marie McClurg, Des Moines, Iowa, and Carolyn McClurg, Chicago, Illinois; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service: 10:00 A.M., Saturday, October 1, 2016, First Lutheran Church, Rock Port.
Interment: Hunter Cemetery, Rock Port.

Tuck, Floyd E. - Floyd E. Tuck, son of William “Bill” and Margaret Jane (Foley) Tuck, was born on February 18, 1924 on a farm in Atchison County, Missouri near Rock Port. He entered into eternal rest on Tuesday morning, September 20, 2016 at Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 92 years, 7 months, 2 days.

Growing up in rural Atchison County, Missouri, Floyd attended Opp country school through the 8th grade. Floyd then began working full time as a farm hand in northwest Missouri.

During World War II, Floyd was inducted into the U. S. Army in January of 1943. He entered into active duty on February 1, 1943 proudly serving his country in the Army Air Corps. On March 11, 1946 Floyd was honorably discharged from the Army having attained the rank of Corporal. During his service time, Floyd received his G. E. D.

Not long after his return home from service, Floyd met the love of his life, Macel Hensley. On November 7, 1948, Floyd and Macel were united in marriage in Sidney, Iowa. To this union one son, Douglas, was born. Following their marriage they made their home in Tarkio, Missouri.

They later found their way to Shenandoah, Iowa where Floyd worked for May Gold Seed Company. Floyd would eventually embark on a long career working for the City of Shenandoah, working as a “meter policeman”. Floyd enjoyed the great outdoors and loved hunting and fishing, especially looking forward to deer season each year.

Preceding Floyd in death were his parents and five sisters. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of over 67 years, Macel Tuck of Shenandoah, IA; son, Doug Tuck and wife Michelle of Essex, IA; granddaughter, Gabrielle “Gabby” Sparks and husband Kyle and great granddaughter, Grace, all of Essex, IA; other relatives and many friends.

Tyson, Edith C. -


Edith C. Tyson, 63, died Friday, May 11,[1984] at the Maryville hospital.
Mrs. Tyson was born in Skidmore and had resided in Denver, Colo, for the last 42 years, formerly living in Nodaway county in Missouri.
She had been employed in he accounting department at the Western Electric Company for 20 years.
She was a graduate of Tarkio High School, Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, and the Chilcothe Business School.
She was a member of the St. Oswald's in the Field Episcopal Church, and the Pioneer Club of the Western Electric Company in Denver.
Surviving are her twin brother, Joseph Curtis Tyson, Alexandria, Va.; one sister, Mary Alice Cornelison, Maryville; her stepmother, Elizabeth Tyson, Maryville.
Funeral services were held Monday at the St. Oswald's Church. Burial in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Mound City.

 

VanGundy, Bliss Albro -

Word was received this week by Mrs. C. O. Van Gundy of the death of Bliss Van Gundy in California. Graveside services were held in Osburn, Kans.
Bliss Albro Van Gundy, son of John and Serilda Jones Van Gundy, was born Oct. 14, 1885 on a farm in Atchison county, Missouri. In 1888 the family moved to Tarkio. Soon after Bliss finished grade school there, they moved back near the site of the village of Milton and about six miles from Fairfax.
Two years later his father traded for a half section just outside Osborne, Kans. to which they moved in April, 1902. Entering the Osborne high school that autumn Bliss graduated with the class of 1906 as its valedictorian.
After a few years on the farm he managed several business stations for the Farmers Union until May of 1918 when he entered the Osborne postoffice as a clerk. This proved to be his post of duty for 36 years, serving as clerk, civil service secretary, assistant postmaster, and the last 16 months as acting postmaster; retiring on April 30, 1954.
Bliss became a member of the Methodist church as a young boy, and in the Osborne church grew into a service of 42 years on the official board, taking a keen interest in helping care for the financial records of the church and Sunday school.
On October, 24, 1918, he married Miss Pearl J. Nelson of Bloomington. They were parents of four children: Mrs. Wesley E. Woodson, Eugene A. Van Gundy, Arthur L. Van Gundy and Mrs. Arris Johnson.
Mrs. Van Gundy died Feb. 21, 1962.
Bliss had three brothers; Phil L. Van Gundy, Harry B. Van Gundy and Frank R. Van Gundy, and eight older half sisters and half brothers, all deceased.

Ward, Geraldine Means -

Graveside services were held on Monday, March 29, 2004, at Tharp Cemetery, Craig, Missouri, for Geraldine (Means) Ward, Mound City, Missouri. Rev. Kathleen Schmidtke officiated. Interment was made in Tharp Cemetery under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Craig.

Geraldine (Means) Ward

95, died Friday, March 26, at a Mound City, Missouri, health care center. Mrs. Ward, the daughter of Robert and Ora Means, was born November 4, 1908, in Atchison County, Missouri. She attended grade school at the Houston School near Fairfax and graduated from Mound City High School, Class of 1926. She then attended Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville, Missouri, and received her teaching certificate. Mrs. Ward was a school teacher in her early years and has lived in the Michigan, St. Louis and Kansas City areas before coming to Mound City in 2002.
On December 6, 1931, she married Milton Henderson "Hank" Ward. He died in 1975. Mrs. Ward was also preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Ora Means; four sisters, Gladys Means, Lucille Ward, Genevieve Kennish and Roberta Garrett; and one brother, Wilber Means.
Survivors include one son, Everett L. Ward, Leavenworth, Kansas; one sister, Nadine Moody, Lee's Summit, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews with a special niece, Joan Hall. Memorials may be directed to Tharp Cemetery in care of Joan Hall, 18107 Highway 59, Mound City, Missouri 64470.

 

Weedin, Beulah -

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 15, 2004, at Mountain View Presbyterian Church, Loveland, Colorado, for Beulah Weedin, Loveland. Reverend Robert Dooling officiated. Interment was made in Loveland Burial Park, Loveland, under the directio of Kibbey-Fishburn Funeral Home of Loveland.
Beulah J. Weedin, age 90, passed away at the Sierra Vista Health Care Center in Loveland, on Tuesday, March 9, 2004. Beulah was born on Jan. 19, 1914, in Coleridge, Nebraska, to Adolph T. and Lillie M. (Weltmer) Frerichs. The family moved to Fairfax, Missouri, where Beulah attended and graduated from high school. She received a bachelor's degree in English from Maryville College in Maryville, Missouri. Beulah taught school for several years.


Beulah married Kenneth R. "Ken" Weedin in Fairfax, on January 15, 1944. They moved to Loveland on November 3, 1956. Beulah raised her family and then went back to college, where she received her master's degree in junior high education at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado.
Education, children and literature were very important to Beulah. Beulah was a volunteer at Mary Blair Elementary School for 20 years. She taught poetry to first-graders for a yearly presentation at school and taught the children memorization of the United States presidents. She also led the Great Books series for kids.
Beulah received an award in 1990, as Mary Blair Volunteer of the Century and, in 1992, was the Regional Winner of National Outstanding School Volunteers. Beulah was interested in human rights, theater, music, reading and the arts. She also loved gardening and the Colorado mountains.
Beulah was a member of Mountain View Presbyterian Church and had served as a Sunday school teacher. She also had been a member of Sorosis and the Book Club.
Beulah is survived by her husband, Kenneth R. "Ken" Weedin of Loveland; a son, Lawrence Weedin and wife, Pat, of Loveland; a daughter, Loraine Salters of Colorado Springs, Colorado; a sister, Helen Fellows and husband, Jack, of Loveland; eight grandchildren, Eric, Mark, Alex and Kelly Weedin, and Regina, Risa, Rosalyn and Renee Salters; one great-grandson, Caden Weedin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions can be made to Mary Blair Elementary School to be used for books and educational needs or the Alzheimer's Association in care of Kibbey Fishburn Funeral Home, 1102 N. Lincoln Ave., Loveland, Co 80537.


 

Whitford, James Earl -

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at the Bram Funeral Home in Maysville, Missouri, for James Earl Whitford, Maysville. Interment was made in Schuckman Cemetery north of Maysville under the direction of Bram Funeral Home.
James Earl Whitford, age 60, passed away on Saturday, July 7, 2001, at the Cameron, Missouri, hospital after becoming ill at his home. He was born on September 25, 1940, in Fairfax, to James Thomas and Myrtle Marie (Faulkner) Whitford.
Mr. Whitford, a pharmacist, was a graduate of Fairfax High School in Fairfax; Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, MO, with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and mathematics and the University of Missouri at Kansas City with a Bachelor of Science from the School of Pharmacy. He served his internship at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City.
Mr. Whitford was a mathematics teacher at Oak Park High School in North Kansas City from 1968-1970. From 1974-1975 he was a pharmacist at the Corner Drug Store in Maryville. In 1975, he purchased the Hire Drug Store in Savannah. In 1980, he purchased the Hudson Drug Store in Maysville, then becoming the Whitford Drug Store which he operated until his death.
Mr. Whitford was a member of the Fairfax Presbyterian Church and the Fairfax A. F and A.M. Masonic Lodge both of Fairfax; Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, St. Joseph, Missouri; Maysville Area Chamber of Commerce of which he was past-president; a former alderman of the City of Maysville; a member of the Lakesite Country Club Men's Club; a member of the National Community Pharmacist Association; the Missouri Pharmacv Association and a former member of the Missouri State Teachers Association. Mr. Whitford held a lifetime teaching certificate.
He was married August 20, 1964, to M. Joann Johnson at the Fairfax Baptist Church, Fairfax. She survives of the home.
In addition to his wife, Joann, he is survived by a son, Joshua Earl Whitford, of the home; a daughter, Jessica Joann Whitford, of the home; his mother, Myrtle Whitford, Maysville; and two sisters, Beverly Gentry, Omaha, Nebraska, and Barbara Bond, Clifton, Virginia.

Mr. Whitford was preceded in death by his father, James Thomas Whitford. Memorials may be directed to the James E. Whitford Memorial for Education in care of the Bram Funeral Home, Maysville, MO 64469.

 

Wright, Gertrude - Graveside services and burial were held at 11 a.m. at Tharp Cemetery, Craig, Missouri, for Gertrude Wright, Tarkio, Missouri. Rev. Steve Pinnell officiated. Services were under the direction of Schooler Funeral Home, Fairfax.
Gertrude (Johnson) Wright, age 90, passed away at Northview Manor Care Center in Tarkio on Wednesday, August 8, 2001. She was born near Fairfax, the daughter of Charles and Pearl (Record) Johnson.

Gertrude was a graduate of Fairfax High School in 1928. She worked for United Telephone Company in Fairfax, later moving to St. Joseph, Missouri, and worked for CD. Smith Drug Company. Upon returning to Fairfax, she was employed at the Fairfax Community Hospital. After retirement, she and husband, Moran, enjoyed traveling and sharing time with family and friends. Gertrude had been a resident at Northview Manor since January of 1997. Gertrude was a member of the Fairfax United Methodist Church and previously had been very active in church activities, as well as many activities in the community.
Survivors include daughters, Barbara Simmons and son-in-law, Tom Simmons, Tarkio, and Jacque Eikenberry, Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren, Patricia Simmons Wold, Rochester, Minnesota, Paul Scott Simmons, Davis, California, Cheryl Barnett, Lees Summit, Missouri, and Diana Miller, Gainesville, Missouri; great­grandchildren, Paul and Barbara Wold, Rochester, Jared Barnett, Grain Valley, Missouri, Jason Barnett, Oak Grove, Missouri, Gregory Barnett, Lees Summit, and Bethany Miller, Gainesville; and great-great­grandchildren, Kahlan Barnett, Grain Valley, and Courtnee Barnett, Oak Grove.
Gertrude was preceded in death by husband, Moran; her parents; and two brothers, Ralph (Jack) and Cecil (Penny) Johnson. Memorials may be directed to the Fairfax United Methodist Church or to Community Hospital Association in Fairfax.

 

Yount, Margie - Funeral services will be held for Margie Yount at St Peter's Lutheran Church near Craig, Friday morning, July 25 at 10 o'clock, conducted by Pastor Donald Jenkins.

Burial will be in English Grove emetery, Fairfax. In lieu of flowers, family requests memorials to St Peter's Lutheran Church.
