THE ATCHISON COUNTY MAIL, March 3, 1881

Blanchard [Iowa] topics - Aaron Helt's funeral was largely attended. The Eureka school dismissed, and followed the procession to the grave.

Watson warblings - William McNeal and family, in company with Wm. Hayes, of this place, have just returned from near Columbus, Kas., where they spent most of the winter visiting friends....Joseph Caddenbach, a German, and for the last twenty-five years a resident of this vicinity, left here about Christmas for Perry county, Mo., where he expected to make his permanent home, and has not been heard of since his departure, and his friends fear that he has been foully dealt with. He carried away a considerable sum of money a fact more widely known than was prudent on his part and the disappearance at the same time of certain disreputable persons from the neighborhood gives additional reason to fear foul play....Joseph Sand, now living near Nebraska City, but formerly a resident of this vicinity and one of the early settlers of this county, was here on business a few days since, looking as hale and hearty as ordinary men do at the age of fifty, though he is about eighty. He attributes his excellent health and vigor to a free though judicious use of native wine, of which he has about thirty barrels in his cellars.

Taylor Lewis, of Jewell County, Kansas, who has been in this county for several weeks returned home this week.

John Handley, who lived near Watson left for parts unknown a few days ago. If these few lines should catch his eye he should pause and consider the fact that it don't pay for a man to skip out with two years subscription to a first-class journal unpaid.

We are sorry to learn of the death of Mrs J.G. Burg which occurred at her home one mile north of Linden, last Friday night. She has been in poor health for several months and while it has been believed for a long time by her friends that her stay on this earth would be short, everything within the skill of the best physicians was done for her, but death had marked her for its victim and she passed peaceably away as above stated. She leaves a husband and several children and a large number of friends to mourn her death.

Charles Miller, a young man who has been working for Dr H.P. Moore, in Polk township, died very suddenly there last week. He had just finished writing a letter to his mother in Kansas in which he informed her of his intention to return home in a short time, and, seeing a sleigh pass, he went out and saw its occupants and asked if he couldn't ride to Watson with them. He then went back into the house to get his overcoat and was returning to the sleigh when he fell dead. It is supposed that he died of heart disease. His remains were sent to Kansas on last Thursday, where his people reside.

We are sorry to learn of the death of Mrs M.C. Alexander which took place at her home north of Watson last week. She has been for several months afflicted with an ovarian tumor which grew with such rapidity as to make it necessary that it be removed. One or two physicians from St Joseph and others from elsewhere were present and assisted in the operation, which was performed last week. The tumor when taken from her weighed about fifty-two pounds. She seemed to improve after the operation was performed but suddenly grew worse and died in a day or two.

Died - Miss Emma Uhlig, daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Uhlig; was born November 9th, 1866, and died March 2nd, 1881, in Templeton township, Atchison county, Mo.
Her sickness was quite lengthly and severe. Her fond father and mother and two loving sisters labored, watched and waited with hopeful expectation that she would recover, but death had singled her as his prey.
The neighbors and friends of the family a goodly number, not withstanding the cold weather and the drifting snow, met at their house to sympathize with them and pay our last respects to Miss Emma, with appropriate worship and submission to Almight God who doeth all things well....

Died - Of Erysipelas, at her residence in Atchison county, Mo., on the 15th of February, 1881, in the 36th year of her age, Mrs Catharine Annie, wife of J.P. Hurst, and daughter of James Rogers of Atchison county, and sister of J.P. Rogers.
Mrs Hurst was a kind and devoted wife and a good and affectionate sister and mother. She leaves a husband and five children, and a large concourse of friends to mourn her sad loss, but she was a favorite of her associates and while she was not a member of any religious order, she was a church going lady and highly esteemed for the high tone of her moral character and christian virtues. No tears need be shed save for the bereaved family. Farewell beloved sister and friend, farewell. Her remains were taken to the Rock Creek cemetery.

We learned on Monday of a horrible accident which occurred in Nishnebotna township on last Friday afternoon by which Frank Million, a son of F.M. Million, Esq., lost his life. He was hunting ducks along the Nishnebotna river and had killed one which fell into the stream. He laid his gun on the bank and waded in to get the duck, and, as he was coming out his attention was attracted by another flock which alighted near him. He seized the gun, which unfortunately had the muzzle pointed towards him, and suddenly drew it towards him, when the hammer caught on a corn stalk and the piece was discharged the entire load entering his left breast. He was picked up and carried home, where, after eight hours of suffering, he passed over the silent river of death into eternity.
The family which was thus so suddenly and terribly deprived of one of its members, has the heartfelt sympathy of a large number of friends and relatives. The remains of the unfortunate boy were laid in their last resting place on last Sunday. [...another account of this in the Watson items]....
