Watson Happenings - On Monday of last week the body of R.P. Morgan, brother of Judge W.H. Morgan of this place, was brought back to Lewis, Iowa, from Los Angeles, California, where he died about two weeks previous. He had been afflicted for several years with that dread scourge of this climate, consumption, and in September last he went West hoping to receive permanent benefit by change of climate, but grew constantly worse until death ended his suffering. He had acquired splendid business attainments and was esteemed for his unswerving integrity....

Westboro Items - Please allow a neighbor of this little wide-awake business town to tell the people of Atchison county what is going on here.

It is quite a lively little town. Business is quite lively. Already there are several hundred bushels of corn sold and a large quantity of shelled corn shipped.

There is one blacksmith shop in full blast, owned by Eli Herman; one meat shop and dwelling combined, owned by W.H.H. Shefe; one grocery, owned by F. Low, who also deals in grain....Corn scales, office and one large corn crib owned by L.B. Day; and last, the depot, which is very nice, or will be when it is finished....

The editor of the Burlington Junction POST is the proud owner of a yaller purp, and all his neighbors wish the dorg was cremated.

The Tarkio BLADE, the first number of which was issued last week, is on our table. It is a five column quarto, Democratic in politics, and is edited and published by M.A. and L.N. Kelso. “Mate” used to preside over the columns of the MAIL of this city, and any one familiar with his peculiar style will not fail to recognize his presence in the BLADE. Go in on your nerve, Mate, and keep the BLADE sharp.

Magnet Melenge - Mr Mitch Lowe, who has been sick a long time, died on Sunday and was buried Monday in the Linden cemetery. Prof Quick preached and conducted the funeral service. Death of a Good Woman - On Sunday last about ten o'clock am., Mrs Mary E. Davis, of this city breathed her last. She had been ill for about two weeks, but her disease seemed to baffle all medical skill. She was an amiable christian lady, and was greatly beloved ay all who knew her. Mrs Davis was a daughter of Andrew and Nancy Martin, now residing in Moultrie county, Illinois. Was born in Jefferson county, Ky., February 22, 1838. Removed with her parents to Illinois in 1851 and was married at the home of her parents in Moultrie county, July 19, 1855. Came to Atchison county with her husband in 1859, residing the most of the time in Rock Port. She was an honored member of the Baptist church here since its organization in 1871, and died in the calm confidence of the christian's faith. She leaves a husband, father, mother and four brothers and a host of friends to mourn her demise. Her funeral took place on Monday at 2 pm at the Baptist church, the service being conducted by Rev Wm Steward, assisted by Revs Lake and Willis, after which the remains were conveyed to Green Hill cemetery for interment.

Magnet Melenge - William Townsend an influential farmer of this neighborhood, is making preparation to emigrate to Kansas....As I am well acquainted with this entire township, I thought it my duty to give a short sketch of the territory and inhabitants. Polk township is rather the finest section of Atchison county. The soil is equally as good as the best, besides it contains the largest body of timber in the county, and is extremely well watered. High Creek and Rock Creek both water this township, and both streams afford splendid mill power. Thousands of never-failing springs burst from the bosom of the earth all along the creeks and little streams. There is a place well up rock Creek where, if a thirsty cow will bawl very loud, the water will come bubbling from the earth....There are three good church houses in this township--Linden, Centennial and Grange. The latter was principally built through and by the influence of Mr N.O. Hopkins' mind and money. The Centennial has felt the influence of Mr Jas Lowe more than any other man. It is a grand thing to have plenty of money and then be ready and willing to spend it in a good cause. The erection of the Linden house is due more to the labor and untied purse of Chas Carpenter than any other persons....There are nine school districts in Polk township. About 540 scholars, between 6 and 21; and not much danger of any decrease....There are three very prominent M.D.'s, in this township -- Drs Buckham, Moore, and Hammond. One splendid equestrian pharmacutist. He can diagnose the ailment of a horse, if the horse will only tell him where he hurts.
