Tarkio History Center

The Tarkio History Center created by the Mule Barn Theatre Guild is a place to do research on Tarkio Missouri’s history and genealogy. The purpose of this center is to kindle and keep alive an active interest in local history; by collection and preservation of books, pamphlets, manuscripts, letters, journals, surveys, field notes, and any and all articles and materials which may be established as, or may establish or illustrate, the history of Tarkio, MO. The center is cooperating with other organizations whose collections are substantially the same as those of this research center.  The goal is to safeguard the existing historical materials pertaining to Tarkio, Missouri and the surrounding communities for future generations in a safe secure facility before it is lost or destroyed.

Donations and loans so far include organizational scrapbooks, minutes, correspondence; Tarkio High School & Tarkio College Yearbooks; books: "The County Schools of Atchison County," "Gone But Not Forgotten Directory of the Deceased Atchison County Missouri 1942-1990," "Tarkio College 1883-1992," "Tarkio Centennial 1880-1980," and "Atchison & Holt County Atlas 1968"; many history reference books; information on David Rankin, the Walnut Inn, the Mule Barn, and the Tarkio Depot; and National Register of Historic Places listings in Tarkio, MO. Plus many more items waiting to be cataloged.

Historical information can be donated, loaned, or scanned and returned to owner. The Tarkio History Center is currently available by appointment on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. The center is located right inside the exterior stairs on the south side of the building and across the street to the east of the Tarkio High School.
